I’ve been on the battlefield many times and this monument is always a must stop and reflect. Very touching.
I look forward to visiting it when it is not so cold next time.
This is now my favorite of your stories, you do a very nice job relating the history of that special monument. Thank you.
I absolutely LOVE the obscure things that we humans do for keeping important parts of history alive. Just think, the dog was SO important that they made sure they had it on the monument and left that space in the picture. CRAZY. The little pup that bound them all together.
Once again Scott, another amazing and informative video of some history! Thanks for sharing!
As you know... it was soooooooo cooooollllddddd. LOL
Thanks Scott for this Great Video. You made us all warm fuzzy with this one. Keep up the Great Work 👍
LOL... after videoing this one, I looked forward to getting home to my remaining two furry people.
I would love to hear more stories like this
Thank You! I need to put up a community post because the views are not great. I am wondering if it is because Gettysburg is far too common for what normally post.
I love this story about Sallie Ann. Keep up the good work, sir!
Sally Ann moved me because I am a dog lover. And it is one of the more odd stories of the Civil War.
Sweet story. I love these human interest stories!
I try to pull out the "human" part of all the site I visit. I think it is where the REAL story is found. We are quite the odd creature.
I really enjoyed this video. I look forward to more.
More to come!
Thank u scott, really enjoyed this video, mans best friend is an understatement, I never knew of this story, very interesting
People think my dogs are crazy and dangerous. But they are probably just like Sallie Ann... protective of the ones who show them kindness.
@@ODDySEEy couldn't agree more
It's always wonderful to see loyal Sallie remembered!
Thanks for sharing, I would never have learned this in school
Hmmm... maybe I should do a run of videos on the "Lies my teachers told me!" :)
Great little video, and very informative. Almost brought a tear to my eyes. Wondered if the 1910 photo used mentioned any of the vets who attended the ceremony? My gg-father Samuel Reed Hilins 1943-1914 was to have been there. Would be nice to have a pic. of him. Thanks
There was no list of who those attendees were... I was looking for it because there were so few left.
I drove on numerous school bus tours for Meyersdale Schools back in the 90's. The tour guides included this little tidbit about Sallie.
"There were two things Sallie hated, Confederate rebels... and... Democrats!"
Good pup Sallie...
That is a very specific statement that has its very own story and history. And yes, it is pretty accurate to the temperature of the nation at that time... and apparently today.
Good morning -Super!you did amazing ~see you on my side-🤙
Hello Armenia and Eugene! Hopefully you watched the video :D Either way, I did come over and check out your channel and subscribed. Very nice drone footage and interesting sites. Maybe one day I will come out and visit and YOU can be my guide!
Brindle bulldog, or Bullterrier. Something like that. Thank you, they are awsome dogs, being bred and trained right.
All dogs are awesome :D They are our defenders and our healers all in one.
In 1865 there was no Staffordshire terrier. Sallie was actually a Staffordshire bull terrier from which the pit bulls thus Staffordshire terriers came from. They were imported by way of Ireland and England. Just to look at her and her size defines she was an offspring from such imports and likely her parents came by way of Irish immigrants.
Funny that back then, when true order and discipline was so severe, that they'd be allowed to have a mascot like that.
I think nobody initially took to the ownership and she was just a random dog running around. Until she started doing cool things... then it would have become a Morale issue once it came to question of putting her down or keeping her away.
But then again... Pennsylvanians :D (which historically are always the ones with dogs beside them in all the wars)
@@ODDySEEy I mean that's how it always starts, stray dogs on base. Then the troops get friendly with them because the troops are still kids for the most part. But the difference is nowadays if they catch you with one you get burned. And the dog would be euthanized. In fact they're proactive in that they try and trap the dogs and euthanize them. Or have been known on many occasions to just go around shooting them.
