In the fierce battle between the Devi and the powerful demon army, the asura general Chikshura witnessed his soldiers being slain by the Devi. Filled with anger, he challenged Ambika Devi, to fight. Chikshura showered arrows upon the Devi. However, the Devi effortlessly cut through his arrows, killed his horses and their controller, and shattered his bow and lofty banner. Undeterred, the asura armed himself with a sword and shield and attacked the Devi. He struck her left arm and her lion companion on the head, but his sword shattered upon touching her arm. Infuriated, he grabbed a pike and hurled it at the Devi, but she shattered it with her own pike. Chikshura's head was severed by the Devi's lion. Another asura named Chamara, mounted on an elephant, joined the battle. He hurled his spear, but the Devi quickly neutralized it. The lion engaged in a fierce hand-to-hand combat with Chamara, eventually killing him by severing his head. Other asuras, Udagra and Karaala, were killed by the Devi using various weapons and physical attacks. Uddhata was pulverized by her club, Vaashkala was killed by a dart, and Taamra and Andhaka fell to her arrows. Ugraasya, Ugravirya, and Mahaahanu met their demise at the hands of the Devi's trident. Bidaala lost his head to her sword, while Durdhara and Durmukha were dispatched with her arrows. As the asura army suffered heavy losses, their leader Mahishasura transformed into a terrifying buffalo to frighten the Devi's troops. He trampled, lashed, and gored the soldiers, causing havoc and destruction. The Devi, furious at the sight, flung her noose and bound Mahishasura, forcing him to abandon his buffalo form. Mahishasura then transformed into a lion, followed by a man with a sword and shield, and eventually into a massive elephant. Each time, the Devi defeated him, beheading his forms. In his buffalo form, Mahishasura wreaked havoc, shaking the three worlds. In response, the Devi consumed a divine drink, laughed with red eyes, and challenged the asura to roar while she enjoyed her drink. She pressed him with her foot, struck him with her spear, and finally, as he emerged from the buffalo's mouth, she beheaded him with her sword. With the asura army defeated, the devas rejoiced, praising the Devi. The celestial sages, Gandharvas, and Apsaras celebrated the victory through songs and dances. Thus concludes the third chapter, "The Slaying of Mahishasura," in the Devi-mahatmya of the Markandeya-purana, during the reign of Savarni, the Manu.
महादेवी और शक्तिशाली असुर सेना के बीच एक भयानक युद्ध चल रहा था। युद्ध में देवी को जीतते हुए देखकर असुर सेना के महान सेनापति चिक्षुर रोष में उनके सामने उतरा और देवी के साथ लड़ने के लिए आगे बढ़ा। चिक्षुर देवी पर अपने तीरों की बौछार बरसा रहा था। देवी ने आसानी से उसके तीरों को काट दिया। देवी के तीरों ने चिक्षुर की धनुष और ऊंची झंडी को भी तोड़ दिया और चिक्षुर के शरीर में तीरों से गहरा घाव किया। देवी ने उसका धनुष और रथ तोड़ दिया, उसके घोड़े मारे और उसके रथ के सवार को भी मार दिया। इसलिए चिक्षुर अब तलवार और ढाल के साथ देवी की ओर दौड़ पड़ा। उसने तेजी से देवी के सिंह को मस्तक पर चोट पहुँचाई और तलवार से देवी की बायीं भुजा में बड़े वेग से प्रहार किया। तब उसकी तलवार टूट गई। इस पर उसकी आँखें गुस्से से लाल हो गईं, उसने शूल हाथ में लिया और भद्रकाली पर उस प्रकाशमय शूल को फेंक दिया। देवी ने उस शूल को आते देख, अपने शूल का प्रहार किया और उसे मार गिराया । यह देखकर चामर आगे बढ़ा। उसने भी देवी पर शक्ति से प्रहार किया। तब जगदम्बा ने अपनी हुंकार से उसे निष्प्रभ किया। फिर सिंह ने चामर के हाथी पर प्रहार किया, उसके साथ बाहु युद्ध किया और फिर अंत में हाथी और चामर दोनों का वध किया। इस प्रकार उदग्र, कराल, उद्धत , भिन्दिपाल नामक राक्षसों को भी देवी ने मौत के घाट उतर दिया। त्रिनेत्री ईश्वरी ने अपनी त्रिशूल से उग्रास्य, उग्रवीर्य और महाहनु को भी मार गिराया। तलवार से देवी ने बिडाल को मार गिराया , और अपने तीरों से दुर्धर और दुर्मुख, दोनों को यमलोक भेज दिया। उनकी सेना को इस तरह नष्ट होते देखकर महिषासुर ने भैंसे का रूप धारण किया और देवी के गणो को त्रास देना आरम्भ किया। उसने अपने क्रोध से धरती, आकाश, सागर सभी को अस्तव्यस्त किया, चंडिका ने पाश फेककर उसे बांध लिया। महिषासुर ने भैंसे के रूप को छोड़ कर सिंह का रूप धारण किया। फिर एक मानवी रूप धारण किया, और फिर गजराज का रूप धारण किया । देवी ने उसकी सूंड काट डाली । तब उसने पुनः भैंसे का शरीर धारण किया और सिंघो से चंडी के ऊपर पर्वत फेकने लगा। उसने बड़े जोर से गर्जना की । चंडिका उत्तम मधु का पान करने लगी । देवी ने कहा "ओ मूढ़ मैं जब तक मधु पीती हु , तब तक तू गरज ले , मेरे हाथ से यही तेरी मृत्यु हो जाने पर देवता भी गर्जना करेंगे " ये कहकर देवी ने उस महादैत्य को अपने पैरों से मसल दिया और अपने शूल से उसके कंठ पर वार किया । फिर भी वह देवी से युद्ध कर रहा था । तब देवी ने बहुत बड़ी तलवार से उसका शिरच्छेद किया । यह देख दैत्यों की साऱी सेना भाग गई , और देवता दुर्गा देवी का स्तवन करने लगे । गंधर्वराज गाने लगे तथा अप्सराएँ नृत्य करने लगी।
यहाँ तीसरा अध्याय समाप्त हुआ ।
