My grandpa would seed some 60 day barley to finish up in late June. Like you say times were different. Its almost 2am. I just came in. Im in a flap to get done by the end of the month. More for insurance reason's. But things are so dang expensive.
I have enjoyed all these videos. I wanted to dairy as well but I was born just a little to late for it. There were well over 60 dairies in my county when I started working on farms. Now there are 6. I do farm but as i looked at buying a herd things just wouldn't pencil out so I would bet it would have been financially worse than it appeared on paper. Now I raise a few acres of corn to feed Holstein steers for freezer beef. I have a small flock of sheep that's expanding because like it or not lambs make more money, and small square baled hay for the horse market. I am not in hock to farm and I can shut it down on Monday morning if I had to. To me a day spent on a 4020 picking ear corn or baling is a good one along with my two cylinders including my dad's 70 diesel or my Super 77 diesel Oliver raking hay. I have had to operate some of the newer tractors and frankly I feel disconnected from them. There's no levers for my hands and I just don't like machines doing my thinking for me. It was better farming in the late 80s and 90 than now if for no other reason than things were just simpler.
My brother sold for John Deere in Atlantic Iowa .They shut down in I think early 1985 and they had 5 4440s on their close out auction they were super popular in that area at that time but money was pretty tight i'm thinking all those 5 brought between 24 and 26 k and they wouldn't have had alot of hours because in that area at that time they were pretty much strictly field tractors and on most farms were the big horse ..Also remember a guy I worked forsaying he bought the last 4020 our local dealer sold factory cab syncro trans and 30 series were already on the lot he paid 9750$
I spent a lot of time in a 4000 in high school, probably one of the few around in SWND. I used to haul all the hay home on the Hay Hiker and stack it. 1971 model synchro with a Hiniker cab and ac. Tractor is still on the place.

Also Ryan you should start doing truck videos. I make my farming and bike money by hauling crude oil, and used to move workover and drilling rigs so I’m all for hearing about badass old school trucks.
I agree because I grew up in the middle of farm country and nobody I mean nobody would run John Deere everyone said they were overpriced junk pieces of 💩 everyone ran Massey, international, white, ford, everything but John Deere it’s funny how different regions have different wants or needs I guess

Believe it or not there is still a small pocket of dairy farms in Southern Illinois that are still thriving and work together

I like your videos. I would like to see an underdog tractor that the guy bought cause it was cheap and he made it work but maybe it never happened

Love your videos but the common theme of losing the family dairy farms is sad ,big farms weather live stock or row crop are not good for small towns
