Head out to West Auckland , Waitākere ranges, West Coast beaches like Piha,Bethells, and Murawai. East coast like North Shore is just swanky homes and yuppies. Past Orewa and up to Matakana for the wines is awesome.

you've probably discovered that Auckland could be any city in the Western world, whereas every other city in NZ are really just big towns, because the next biggest city is Christchurch which only has a population of under 400k, compared to Auckland of 1.6m, which is more than the population of the South Island, but still small international wise.

I actually really liked both Christchurch and Queensland :) Auckland was really just a stopover for me :)
