@@NobodyCares56 The problem is that this shabbard is actually not very practical for traveling. I would rather have a backpack with my stuff on my back.
There are two problems: 1. In reality there wasn't such thing as "adventuring". No need to go in a small group with battlefield level weapons. When you just travel you only need some self-defence weapon. If you march to war - there are carts and horses and everything. 2. Not fully enclosed scabbard is rather bad in wet weather - rain, fog, snow. It's not just problem of actual water falling inside scabbard, it's the moisture in the air. Though there are ways to work around it, there is the point 1 that makes work rather pointless.
@@NobodyCares56 it comes down to the intended purpose. In medieval times the average person carrying around a greatsword that might benefit from this wouldn't need to draw the sword quickly. It is more practical to have a weatherproof scabbard attached to your pack because if you need the sword then you almost definitely will have time to get it. Fantasy characters have back scabbards because they need to be battle ready at all times. They can't waste precious seconds taking off their backpack. I used to have a weaboo-level Nordic friend who shouted "Backscabbard alert!!!" Every time he saw something that wasn't placed on the perfectly glorious placement of the hip
It would not work in the north simply because of rain and snow or to make it work you would need to be very careful to not make it rust. It is fine for fantasy it however is not great for real-world situations everywhere. If you at all think about rust prevention open-faced back scabbard is not a good idea (you also want the end hollow to get water out of there)
@asdrubale bisanzio That is fine if you are not intending to move around with it. if you are a flap will not hinder rain at all what so ever, Wool is also very absorbent and keeps moisture for quite a decent amount of time To make the flap secure enough that you can move around with it without getting rain in you have effectively made a normal scabbard on the back You also can not have the flap be in the way of sheathing the sword making it harder to place but i do think it is possible For it to not affect the unsheathing part it needs to be lose enough that you are just pushing it away and not cut in to it, nah i just see a lot of problems with using a flap. I see to many problems with a flap and a sharp blade. Again what is made here is fine in fantasy it just has some flaws in "real world" applications.
Would be interesting to find a way to make the wing able to fold over at the top so you could use it as a normal scabbard or fasten it to your back with the wing open for use on the back.
That’s what I thought as well. There are certain special hinges that can stiffen in specific positions, so give the flap hinges that stiffen in the open position and you have a shabbard that can be opened when you want to be ready to draw and closed for travel and protection of the sword from the elements.

This video gets a big ol' like, just because Shad is so ecstatic about his new Shabbards.
9:44 my only thought were "awwww, he is being adorable again!"
After this, if Matt Mercer doesn't start adding the word 'shabbard' to standard fantasy vocabulary, there's going to be some sternly worded letters.
In all seriousness, great to see that giddy excitement at a well-fashioned idea made real. Definitely taking notes for possible future art projects.
I know right like this is making the lot of us more realistic warfare like dnd players so happy
Imagine an army of Landsknechts drawing their great swords from their Shabbards simultaneously *goosebumps*
Only the first rank of the formation were doppelsoldners, the rest were usually carrying pikes with an arming sword for back up.
This is perfect I mean imagine playing a game and u got the “Shabbard” and u got to see that badass unsheathing when your getting ready to fight
Thank you for saying it's okay for fantasy authors to use the design. I've incorporated the back scabbard into my novels ever since I saw your first video on it, but part of me was always concerned it was 'bad' for me to do so. It's an awesome design and works so well in my fantasy world.
Indeed, thats going into my pet rpg ruleset side by side with the nuclear pommel tecnique
Like a kid showing off his new toy to his friends. Incredibly wholesome.
It's a bit like that but it's a man showing off his toys!
He is barely keeping himself from jumping up and down in excitement, and honestly that's the best thing about this channel.
The ULTIMATE back scabbard looks awesome! But, as an engeneer, I still in shock that it tooks like 5 years of fight to youtubers to get the idea "If something is on the way and blocking you, you can add a cutout to it".

I love this video. Shad looks like a little kid after Christmas explaining to his friends what he got.
You know what makes your channel so great? Your obvious enthusiasm for the topics you cover. That can't be faked. Live your dream Shad, live your dream!
"Is it in?"
"Yes."
"WHOOO FIRST TRY!"
Every time I see a comment like this, all I can hear is a sarcastic voice of Yoda saying "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is."

Hopefully Shad's camera man doesn't hear that too often.

Sounds like my honeymoon😄😄😄
I love Shad's childlike excitement whenever something works perfectly brings me just pure joy.
you cant ignore the fact that the scabbard would also protect the wearer from behind
Granted you make a lot of adjustments and you have a lot of practice, you could easily make a shabardield. A Shabbard and a shield combined.
We need to go further and make a shabbardieldsword

I’m about 80% sure that the reason he has 3 swords is just so he has an excuse to get 2 more shabbards. Well played sir
No, he has a steel one for fighting humans, a silver one for fighting demons and the third is to impress the ladies.
Because... SWORDS!

The amount of enthusiasm and pride Shad has in his content genuinely makes me smile
I have to admit I approached the video with some sort of pedantic prejudice, but now I want a Shabbard so bad... XD
Hey Federico! Love your videos mate. Awesome to see you here, and so glad you enjoyed the video!
@@shadiversity thank you very much Shad! It’s reciprocal!! Cheers from Italy!
This is like those rpg weapon upgrades. Level 1-2-3. Hats off to Shad and the Shabbard.

You went from fantasy, to proof, to standardization with your seal. Well played.
"I just happen to have 3 now"
Thats how it starts, shad
Shad's shabbard and Joerg's instant legolas are making stories set in fantasy all the more magical. 👌❤️
The next step is getting a sentient sword that floats around you.
Extra props if it brags about how great it is, and has ridiculous rules it expects its wielded to follow.

Finally, my Fantasy Nerd dreams are real!!
In the name of the mighty scabbardsmith Shad, I offer this comment to the unforgiving algorithm that it may look kindly down upon us.
Yes i didnt actually have anything to say, I just know that the more comments the more likely that the yt algorithm doesnt bury the video.
Yes but what fossil do you think he would have taken?
The best thing in the video is watching how Shad is so exited about his creation. I kinda know the feeling, so it's contagious. Also Shabbard is both an amazing invention and a cool name.
shad: "I just wanted two of the same sword"
me: "What? why do you need two?"
shad: "i ended up buying three."
me:
He wanted a sharp one and a blunt one, that explains the idea of getting two. How or why he ended up with three, that's the enigma.
@@maximsavage Like you said a blunt one for showing and making videos with safety, a sharp one because... er... protection? and of course one to put on display on the wall or cabinet
Perhaps there was a bit of a discount for buying 3?
Or, you know, who can resist the siren call of beautiful weapons?
A blunt one for videos and showing off for safety. A sharp one because, why even bother if you are not gonna have a sharp sword? and another sharp one for testing and abuse the fuck out of it.
@@gantzllat and then blunted steel swords are also suitable for sparring with armor.
I love it how the show is slowly turning into Shad showing off his latest new thing.
I can't stop myself"That's not a sword,THIS is a sword"
His nerdy enthusiasm over the shabbard, really makes the video more enjoyable, I can relate to his joy :)
I used to have a weaboo-level Nordic friend who shouted "Backscabbard alert!!!" Every time he saw something that wasn't placed on the perfectly glorious placement of the hip
He is Nordic, so by rule, he is right.
I wonder what he would think of this
Oh how the mighty have fallen
It would not work in the north simply because of rain and snow or to make it work you would need to be very careful to not make it rust.
It is fine for fantasy it however is not great for real-world situations everywhere.
If you at all think about rust prevention open-faced back scabbard is not a good idea (you also want the end hollow to get water out of there)
@asdrubale bisanzio That is fine if you are not intending to move around with it. if you are a flap will not hinder rain at all what so ever, Wool is also very absorbent and keeps moisture for quite a decent amount of time
To make the flap secure enough that you can move around with it without getting rain in you have effectively made a normal scabbard on the back
You also can not have the flap be in the way of sheathing the sword making it harder to place but i do think it is possible
For it to not affect the unsheathing part it needs to be lose enough that you are just pushing it away and not cut in to it, nah i just see a lot of problems with using a flap.
I see to many problems with a flap and a sharp blade.
Again what is made here is fine in fantasy it just has some flaws in "real world" applications.
The most important day in the last 2000 years. Knights in heaven shed a tear.

I meam he even got the travel pouches & everything hehe

@@qualitygardenchair9334 (lifts finger) Hello adventurer!
Try to put a nail hook on the shabbard and make an update to How many weapons can an Adventurer carry.
Nail _catch,_ you mean. ;)
