    Watching this made me wonder where bad / contaminated / old refrigerant gasses go - and then what happens to them afterwards. A bit of an interesting rabbit hole to go down with some differing information in some internet forums. Surprised I've watched so many of your videos and just now wondered that...
    I agree with the other commenter that I'm not an HVAC/HVACR guy, but enjoy watching the troubleshooting process.

      If you see a large black spider so shiny that it looks like it's made of patent leather, it's a black widow. You really don't need to see that red spot on its belly. ( and the surest way to get bitten is to flip it over to see if it has the red spot).

      I think it would have been pointless because if it really is a faulty overpressure bypass valve, you won't be able to see anything. The scroll assembly is totally fine.

  • @achannelwithnopurpose1977
    @achannelwithnopurpose1977 9 місяців тому +17

    I think there could be a quality control and/or a design flaw issue. I’ve heard LG got a class action lawsuit back in 2020 for bad refrigerator compressors. It effected residential refrigerators only but it’s very possible due to past compressor quality control issues that a new wave of defective products exists. Both compressors you replaced were replaced for bad bypasses and the compressors looked pretty new. Coupled with the previous lawsuit, I suspect that a quality issue/design flaw exists with a certain model of scroll compressors. Check the date code and serial number for each compressor you pulled out of that system if possible at this point.

    • @DocNo27
      @DocNo27 9 місяців тому +1

      it was their linear, not scroll compressors, that had the flaws.

    • @achannelwithnopurpose1977
      @achannelwithnopurpose1977 9 місяців тому +2

      @@DocNo27 I know it was the linear compressor but I was pointing out that LG has a history of faulty products even if the compressor type was different. Plus 2 newer compressors with similar bypass issues coupled with the fact LG is known to have had issues with some of their products is grounds to suspect that there could be bad quality control or a design flaw from the manufacturer LG.

    • @latestarter7761

    Working on cars I would often run some hot water over or even lightly heat the dryer with a torch while recovering to help it boil off all the refrigerant if it started frosting up.

    • @stormeagle28
      @stormeagle28 8 місяців тому

      I wouldn't do that, it could release water vapor out of the dryer as well and you don't want to have these filling up the system.

    • @BensSightSoundandAuto
      @BensSightSoundandAuto 8 місяців тому

      The system is going to be evacuated anyway so that would boil what little water vapour if any, off.

    • @stormeagle28
      @stormeagle28 8 місяців тому

      @@BensSightSoundandAuto As you know, you'll never get a perfect evacuation (especially not in a time-tight working environment on cars), so you can't get all the vapor out of the system. You'll make it harder for the new dryer (which also has to care about moisture in the new refrigerant, often it's not as dry as "new" might suggest) if you flush the system with water vapor. There are voices out there who say, if you can cut an old welded dryer out of a system then don't weld it out.

    24:10 You should get (or have a Machinist Friend make) a small copper or brass tack-hammer (3/8 x 3/8 inch striking face) to gently tap stubborn pipes into place during Braising...
    Then there's less risk of burning your fingers pushing or giggling hot pipes...and the copper or brass face is malleable enough to not mar the copper pipes as you tap them...

    i agree internal bypass is leaking by. i would isolate the compressor and valve down the discharge(if you can), and see if the noise changes. You can also use a small tube, one end goes to your ear the other end goes on the compressor to see if thats where your noise it coming from, an ear plug in the unused ear help as well

    Curious if you have had any issues with leaks around the brazed joints - I ask because throwing a “Wet towel on to cool it off” may result in the metallurgical process known as quenching instead of cooling - and quenched metal tends to be crystalline and brittle and will crack much more easily under vibration than the same metal which is allowed to cool slowly (slower cooling results in “annealing” which is not brittle

    I always think about this when purging for a compressor,
    Your coming in through the discharge line, how do you know you have flow through the compressor through both of your joints out of the suction joint to the shearer valve?
    Considering the reeds, they probably act like a check valve and don’t allow flow. I think it’s likely it’s skipping both of your joints it goes through the condenser coil then the evaporator then and out of the suction valve.
    Even if you purged from the suction side, how do you know it’s flowing through the compressor, through the reeds passed the joints? I would think the path of least resistance is still the coils.
    Something I always think about. Love the content Chris
