Yeah, in Somi case english is not her second language cause she lives and using it from early age. If i would to say, Wendy is fluent in english and Somi is native.

전소미님 아버님께 3~4년정도 영어그룹과외 받은적있는데 엄청 도움 많이받았어요ㅎㅎ 네덜란드계 캐나다인이신것도 있지만 지금 생각해보니 학생들 수준에 맞춰서 영어교육 연구를 오랫동안 하셨던 것 같은 실력있는 선생님이셨습니다! 당시 초딩이었을때라 산만 그 자체였는데 선생님 쉅 시간 때만큼은 집중해서 공부했던 기억ㅎㅎ 영단어 사전도 직접 만드시고 게임도 같이 해주시고!! 영어 입덕을 도와주셨던 분!!

Canadian and American accents can be pretty identical except for the pronunciation of a few words. Someone from Toronto will sounds pretty American while maybe someone from Vancouver could have more of a typical Canadian accent.
Yes! She lived in Minnesota for awhile. Sometimes, I can even hear her Minnesotan accent.
@@rvpawp canadian accents are most similar to the states they border, canadians from Vancouver sound more Californian/Seattle, while canadians from Toronto sound more new york/Michigan
@@Jackson-nr2mw torontonians don't sound like new yorkers, who have a very distinct accent. People from Toronto have a illinois, ohio, indiana Midwestern accent.

In the end, remember that this is not a competition on who's better at English. I believe they are both great at it! They both had their advantages and disadvantages, but despite that, they're fluent! I applaud that.

Wendy studied in Canada while Somi was born in Canada but raised in South Korea. I noticed that while Wendy's pronunciation and accent is great, she lacks in vocabulary and she seems nervous and thinking a lot when speaking in English. (maybe she's not that confident since she dont practice her English skills in South Korea). while Somi seems so confident and she knows English really well. maybe at home they speak in English?
I agree on this one. Even tho you're great at a skill before but once you don't try enhancing it or apply it every now and then, there's really a tendency that you'll get rusty. Anyways one's vocabulary doesn't only get measured by speaking skills, I'm pretty sure both knows and understands a lot. Somi just has an advantage that she has someone to talk to in english in a daily basis while our Wendy rarely meets and gets to talk with people in the said language.
when somi's speaking to her dad or evelyn shes sometimes use english but korean all the time
The main problem with Wendy is that she doesn't get to practice her English since none of the members speak Englush whereas Somi grew up speaking it. So obviously, Somi is a better speaker, but either way it is great that they're both bilingual (plus know some other languages)

That was like so weird because in my country, mixed child is being celebrated. If you have mixed blood, for sure you will get popular, regardless of how you look. Wendy is my bias 💙💙💙 from interviews I’ve seen she speaks English with no accent so that’s great but almost always has trouble arranging words and seems to have a limited vocabulary. She needs to hang out with more English speakers so she doesn’t lose her skills

Well if you are in Wendy’s position of course theres a big possibility that her English will be rusty if you dont have someone to speak english language in day to day conversation. In Somi’s case having her growing up using both language and foreigner father of course its expected for her to be a native speaker.
I remember i did have a toddler neighbor shes 4 or 5 at that time shes already fluent in english since her parents only (local people, didnt have any foreign parents) speaks with her in english, now shes already full grown and speaks like shes born and raised in US since she already adopted american accent as well.
They both are amazing, right?😘🔥

This was a really interesting video. I like how you dissected some of the differences between how Wendy and Somi speak in English. I live in Ohio in the Great Lakes region of the United States and while I definitely pick up on the subtle canadianism of her pronunciations (ex. The way she says Sorry) I almost feel like she picked up more pronunciation cues from her time in Minnesota. As in, if I was to close my eyes and listen she sounds like a girl from my part of the country. I don’t know if that makes sense?
You can tell that Somi thinks in English when she's speaking it, whilst Wendy is thinking in Korean when speaking it. This is due to Somi speaking English at home so will come natural, whilst Wendy hasn't used English in a while.

Having watched many clips of the two, I believe Wendy has perfect English skills while Somi has extremely good English skills, but they are both fluent. Just in watching this video, Somi made at least 2 English errors. 1) “sheeps” instead of “sheep” and 2) “expire time” instead of “expiration date.” I bring these up because #1 is grammatically incorrect and #2 is something we don’t say but makes sense. Her errors are minimal and quite understandable to native speakers. As an English teacher and American, they both sound North American. I haven’t watched any clips with them using a strong Canadian accent. That being said, Canadian and mainstream American English are extremely similar except for a few noticeable differences (The words “sorry” and “about” come to mind). And what I mean by mainstream American English is the accent most people speak on tv unless purposefully trying to use a regional American accent (such as southern, New York, Boston, etc. accents).

Michel Deroy I think the “sorry” and “about” differs depending on the person or maybe region, but Canada is definitely known for it. I have some Canadian friends who pronounce it differently than Americans and some who pronounce it the same way. Actually, to me it sounds like the Minnesotan accent. The friends who pronounce those two words differently also pronounce words like “bag” and “borrow” differently (just like the Minnesotans) too, so maybe it’s regional... 🤷🏻♀️
Michel Deroy But yeah, New Yorkers...I’m from the Midwest, which is known for speaking more slowly than others, and boy do I have problems with understanding New Yorkers sometimes! I feel like some of them need subtitles 😂
Watching this video was very helpful because I learned a lot of accents and threw away the negativity from people that really motivated me to be more confident and keep learning ... Thank you very much for your great video👏🏻

About the maintainning the accent, for me It happened the same. But the difference is that I wasn't born in another country.
In my house we talk with both languages my parents are native on, that's why I maintained the accent. I think it is the same with Somi.
