🎄 I wanted to compose an arrangement which features both the "British" and "American" versions of this wonderful carol. Growing up in Australia, Christmas is somehow a mashup of British and American traditions and I came to know and love both melodies. Don't make me choose a favourite! Or ... a favorite .. haha! Interestingly, the melody for the popular version of the carol in the UK (which I play first) - was also composed by an American!
So .. the truth is that BOTH versions are actually American! William Kirkpatrick composed this version in 1895 whereas the tune which became popular in the US was composed by James Murray in 1887. I find it fascinating (and fun) that when with a group of friends from all over the world - if we decide to sing "Away in a Manger" - people start singing different tunes and then say.. "wait.. what?" :-)

I never knew there were two versions! I had often listened to this carol and sometimes thought that it sounded familiar. I think I was hearing the American version. Thank you; beautiful music and educational.

I'm American, but I learned the British version first, so when I first heard the American version, I thought it was wrong

Very nice apart from the bass part. By the end of it I was actually quite frustrated with the piece, everything apart from the bass being repeated for 5 years was nice. I mean it moved a tiny bit once and then when you modulated. It's a lullaby so I understand a grounded bass but it's so much nicer when you have that movement in the bass to compliment the chords so when it resolves it feels better to us, we feel it go home but that makes it feel like we are opening the door but the door keeps getting stuck and we can't even get out the house to go back to it. So I found it a bit 'annoying' for a lack of a better word. Good playing though. You made it sounds as good as it could sound.
