Finally a Viking-themed show that gave some little room to Faroese too, instead of going for the usual Icelandic or Norwegian. Good for a change.
Season 1, episode 1

Obsessed
❤️❤️❤️
There is a slower version to this song, the part when Hild was comforting a broken Uthred while sitting by the fields. Anyone have that part?
Nevermind. I just realise it was the same song after re-watching and re-opening old wounds. 😭
And main theme?
Can you do the opening theme of last kingdom, with a English translation please been trying to find out what it means
You tell me? The lyrics are nowhere to be found
The opening theme lyrics are from one of our very old stories written in old Norse, called the Vǫluspá, which means "Prophecy of the seeress". She tells Odin what she has foreseen- The fate of humans and Gods at Ragnarök, but this is the beginning of the story where she tells him how earth came to be, and she remembers being born and raised by Jötunn (giants) and the seed of Yggdrasil (The world tree). :)
In her new song from S5, the Beloveds, she also continues that story, about how the sun turns black in the eyes of the allfather (Odin) and how flames are playing in the sky..
@ban-draoidh318 are you able to translate the theme, in English if possible.
It would be something like this. Translating the Vǫluspá from old Norse word for word, wouldn't make as much sense. This is more understandable:
Hear me all men,
you great and small sons of Heimdal.
Allfather (Odin), You want me to tell old stories, the earliest ones I remember
of the oldest deeds of gods and men.
I remember the giants born long ago before me,
in ancient days they raised me.
I remember nine worlds, nine giantesses,
and (the seed of) Yggdrasil below the ground..
@@ban-draoidh318 wait, the Beloveds' lyrics are from Völuspá? Do you maybe know which verse(s)?
А где тут действия происходят? В какой стране?
It was in Northumbria, before it became a part of a unified England. The TV series is called ‘The Last Kingdom’, which was adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s novels based on Anglo-Saxon Britain covering the eventual unification of England through the eyes of Uhtred of Bebbenburg who had his home invaded by Vikings.
He himself was taken as a slave for the Vikings, so he had to overcome the inner turmoil of being a Saxon and a Dane during one of the most tumultuous but important times in English history. It’s basically why we live in England today, and not “Daneland”, so the Saxons do realise Alfred’s vision and “win” despite the rough start. It was Alfred the great who sowed the seeds to a unified England, and it was his descendants who cemented his vision.
Though in real life Uhtred was born years after Alfred’s time, so it’s just a play on history: historical fiction. In reality, Alfred, Edward, Aethelflaed, Aethelstan, etc, all achieved their accomplishments without Uhtred. But it’s an enjoyable series nonetheless, though I do recommend researching these people anyway because they don’t nearly get the coverage they deserve in my opinion. 👍🙂
@@phoenixrose1192 Thank you for such a story. It was very interesting!😉/ Спасибо за такой рассказ. Было очень интересно!😉
@@lisalatysheva6162 You’re welcome! And you’re too kind, I don’t think I’ve done this era any justice at all! 😂
Just to clarify, I do genuinely mean it when I say the Anglo-Saxons won despite the inverted commas! What I meant was, I have felt some of the characters in the series have sacrificed a lot for this vision to happen, including Uhtred and the house of Wessex in particular. And I’m glad it did happen! In our history many of the Anglo-Saxon monarchs had died young, but they each had a hand in the formation of England today. So it’s all very bittersweet, I’d like to think they were rewarded in another life in some way. If that doesn’t sound too sentimental or anything! 😉
As the historian Eric John wrote in the 20th century: “It was the Anglo-Saxons who made England, the Normans who attempted to make Great Britain. And as yet they have not succeeded so well.”
It was quite ironic because the Anglo-Saxons sailed over here from The Netherlands, Northern Germany and Denmark, centuries earlier. So they were pretty similar to the Danes or Vikings anyway. They were once pagans themselves also and their languages were mutually intelligible, only the differences in religion actually set them apart.
And well to this day, I’m English before British even though I’m a millennial and fairly progressive. The latter, I’ve felt has been more of a a political construct simply because the Scots needed our money whilst our Queen died without an heir. But I’m English in my heart and always will be, if that makes sense? We English owe a lot to the Anglo-Saxons, to say the least. We women even had more rights during this period than after the Normans arrived, they had land rights and laws that were implemented to punish men severely for ever harming a woman, etc.
And all the infighting between the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy basically enabled the Vikings to invade initially, well all but Wessex, but because of this Alfred the Great realised all the ‘Christian kingdoms’ were stronger together so the rest is history.
So what is this song about? Who is Sigmundur & Brestir? Is this some tale from the gods?
All the people mentioned are historial/mythical are characters (often chieftains of sort) named in the Færeyinga saga: Tóri Beinirson, Sigmundur Brestisson, and Brestir Sigmundsson
Sigmundur Brestisson (961-1005) was a Faroese Viking chieftain, and was responsible for introducing Christianity to the Faroe Islands in 999. He is one of the main characters of the Færeyinga saga.
