I met Aaron when I visited Dallas. Really nice guy. Wish him all the best! He’s a car guy and has a passion for cars and the GMG business model has worn him down.
Not sure why this is so current when it happened years ago? Summed up really quick with Richards comments, “he worked for me for 14 years”, when it should have been they worked together for 14 years. Richard was the Sales guy, Aaron was the Shop guy, but it came down to one owner and not two. I’m sure that stung. But who knows, a lot scripted, a lot we the public don’t know. But I will say, bad business model; every leader has a strong right hand man, and Richard didn’t see it that way (apparently).
Oh Pu-Lee-Ze. This is what happens when a production company offers to let you make your own similar show and offers you a percentage that sounds better than your salary. Which then falls on it's face btw.
Can't blame him for his position. He's suffering from "car build burnout." At least he was honest with Richard -- and for that, he's always got, and always had, my respect.
Kaufman could not take the pressure because he's a lousy mechanic and clueless. Anyone who does not know enough to use break in oil on a new engine can not call himself a mechanic. It's that simple.
Richard should of offered him a percentage of the company rather than a wage. Aaron was too big of a face of the show for him to leave. The show Certainly turned for the worse when he left.
Richard was too greedy, and by then full of himself. Shortly after he made the statement that no one person is not replaceable. The original idea may have been Richard's ( Wooohooo's), but Aaron was a key part of making it a success, but each year the show went on, " Wooooo-Hooooo" treated Aaron more and more just like any other hourly wage employee. Besides, I've heard enough Woooo-Hooooo to last me awhile.
Huge fan of the show, I agree, and in fairness, people need to evolve in their professional lives. Don't blame Kaufman for quitting, he did 14 years working in the same job. People need to move when they get itchy feet. Hindsight says that some of the deadlines for finishing those cars would have aggravated the purist in him. Perhaps if he had been offered a big chunk of business ownership then it might have swayed his opinion, but that's a moot point. In a small group there's always a potential banana skin if you're too reliant on one person and their presence is pretty much taken for granted.
This can all be summed up very easily. Look at what Aaron drove off in. A regular mans work truck. But 100+ hours a week he had to build cars for Richards personal collection and customer cars. Richard made the money, reaped the major benefits, and Aaron just stayed humble and he saw how much Richard and the business changed around him and did what he had to do. Fast forward to today, Aaron is where he should be, highly respected and recognized by his own style.
@@nunyabizness3882 Well to be frank, just google Richard's car collection and you'll see how that 80k truck compares.. Plus when you put in 14 years of work for the same boss and the 80-100 hours of work during every week, sleeping/napping in the garage next to the builds as you are on a deadline to finish the cars, while your boss makes huge money off of your work and you get a normal paycheck, i completely understand why Aaron left. Overwork your staff, underpay them and one day the cup will overflow and they'll leave and not even look back as they do so. Did this hurt the show in the end? I'd like to think so, as the show wasn't the same after he left, many stopped watching (including me) i don't even know if it's airing anymore? But yea, work burnout is a big thing and you don't want that to happen to your staff.

Big props to Aaron. After fourteen years it isn't easy to walk away from anything. I'm sure he took a long time on his personal days to arrive at that conclusion, which brings a lot of uncertainty full-circle. But at the end of the day he believed in himself, the way he saw his life going and put one foot in front of the other to make that vision a reality.

Aaron is a genius and a hard worker and his name is legendary so he can't fail, his followers will always appreciate his skill. Notice how Richard makes it about himself. Rather than saying he gave me a lot of great years and I respect his decision and I hope he succeeds, he says it was a slap on the ass after working for me for 14 years. Working for me. That just tells me he never saw Aaron as an equal even though Aaron was ultimately the reason for his success.
Same. I used to watch every episode. After Aaron left just wasn't the same and the builds weren't the same quality. Aaron is a master mechanic at a level that not many people can reach. Good for him for doing his own thing. He deserves it.

Good for him. Aaron definitely seemed like the brains of the whole operation. I was at SEMA one year and there was a huge line around a booth for autographs as I walked by. I asked one of the guys standing there who the line was for, and he said Richard Rawlins. All I could think was, why?
I totally understand were He's coming from, you work your ass off for somebody thinking your doing your part and feel appreciated and then one day you realize, I can do better and im over it, you can just see the look of all His pressure being wiped away when He walked out.
Do not blame the man for wanting to find his own place in life . Weather he fails or wins , you have to try. Richard did it so why shouldn't some one else . Richard could have treated him better. There was also a coldness to how Aaron left which says he was seriously frustrated. And Richard not letting him say goodbye to the other guys is very controlling and likely one reason Aaron left.
It's not about the pay or the shop conditions. Been there, done that myself. What it boils down to is working too long under the gun with someone else's time lines and ideals.... that don't jive with yours. There's no right or wrong, just time to go your own way and hope to find another slot where the boss doesn't try to change you.... along with over / under selling your abilities to your customers, passing the buck, or taking credit instead of giving credit.

When I managed a Radio Shack long ago, I was forced to fire a guy due to low sales. It came from the higher ups as he wasn't costing us but he wasn't productive as much as they wanted. I told him and then took him out to lunch. I am not a pushy sales type person and I appreciated his style and so did the customers. My store closed down 1.5 years after they moved me out ( I got downgraded to assistant manage of a huge store so my income actually went up slightly ) as customers just stopped wanting to go to a pressure sales place to shop.( the sales people were all replaced by new pressure sales people ) I saw RS's demise coming years before it happened. Management stopped caring at all about the experience and just wanted sales. I can understand getting burned out. Many times the money doesn't matter if you are miserable. I left Radio Shack < a year after that, never to return. I have been self Employed since, I get to do it my way now.

Both great guys, wish Aaron had the ability to give him two weeks, to a month because of their phenomenal history. Regardless, happy that they both can succeed doing what they do
I got the chance to meet Aaron at Arclight in Dallas when they were in the process of moving to their new shop back in 2019. I'd never heard of him, but my wife was a huge fan and was geeking out. She kind of painted this image of a Hollywood superstar mechanic, and when we came to the shop, his assistant brought us back, and he was just standing there cleaning his tools and packing up. We talked for a while, got some photos, and helped them pack a little. He's a genuine and amazing guy, complete polar opposite of Rawlins.
When your the only one doing 99% of the work, handling all off the builds and working through the night to meet deadlines and your “partner” Richard is only writing checks to pay for parts and supplies, it’s kinda hard on the builder….meaning Aron
Aaron: "I quit after 14 years of busting ass for you under impossible deadlines" Richard: "come on man, you cant quit, i need you to build a street car, right now" Then Richard cries for himself
I've met and been around Richard Rawlings a few dozen times. He is about himself and only himself. Aaron on the other hand was just a good dude. I'm surprised he stayed as long as he did.
Aaron has hated Richard since the second year of the show. They are never on set together unless they are shooting. Richard is a complete jerk that did way too much coke and Aaron just hated it. I can't believe Aaron made it as long as he did. BTW, nearly everyone working on the show hated Richard.
I believe you about Aaron & the other employees TV crew. He works them like they are his slaves, on his plantation. The coke claim can't be made without hard proof as I see it. And any amount of coke used is too much. It would not surprise me at all if he did, it fits his behaviour. But it also fits that of a narcissist who thinks he king of his own world. Maybe without the drugs he is a really nice guy, but that is hard to believe having watched the program from the beginning, he didn't change that much or at all over that time. From a viewers point a view I would have like to have seen the build up to the point where Aaron couldn't take it no more better captured on camera then choose to let us see.. Like discovery did do with OCC. They already did a spinoff with the old crew in his first shop so why not do it with Aaron too? Probably because Rawlings had put in the contract Aaron could not make a new show on the channel without rawlings being involved. Or it is a discovery decision or Aaron 's. But he does have a UA-cam channel with a car show so that would rule the last option out. I think he has also fired one of the painters who has been with the show for a long time. Also Sue is out of the picture. She even hated him on camera

@@huntjl88 JB's right though. Their official titles may be boss and employee but they were also partners. Aaron did so much for the business.

I met Aaron when I visited Dallas. Really nice guy. Wish him all the best! He’s a car guy and has a passion for cars and the GMG business model has worn him down.
What’s funny is that he didn’t catch anything that Aaron said the he over worked them. That says a lot about the boss.
Thats what happens if you misuse your main mechanic, you dont realise what youve got untill its gone.
Bad boss. And what does he actually do in the shop? Exploiting others and get rich. Aaron does all the work!
Mike N
Not sure why this is so current when it happened years ago? Summed up really quick with Richards comments, “he worked for me for 14 years”, when it should have been they worked together for 14 years. Richard was the Sales guy, Aaron was the Shop guy, but it came down to one owner and not two. I’m sure that stung. But who knows, a lot scripted, a lot we the public don’t know. But I will say, bad business model; every leader has a strong right hand man, and Richard didn’t see it that way (apparently).
Happens way to much. Boss guy always over uses and the worker feels unappreciated
This is what happens when you over work a guy and under pay him.
Pmpbreeze Ogah Damn right!
Yup , all these teams that make to mainstream tv most always fail.. business wise or relationship wise

So true,so true.Anyway show must go on
Aaron made millions as a fucking mechanic. He is fine
Richard being Richard and not thinking of the importance of others
Richard was too greedy, and by then full of himself. Shortly after he made the statement that no one person is not replaceable. The original idea may have been Richard's ( Wooohooo's), but Aaron was a key part of making it a success, but each year the show went on, " Wooooo-Hooooo" treated Aaron more and more just like any other hourly wage employee. Besides, I've heard enough Woooo-Hooooo to last me awhile.
Same happened at Orange Country Choppers
Huge fan of the show, I agree, and in fairness, people need to evolve in their professional lives. Don't blame Kaufman for quitting, he did 14 years working in the same job. People need to move when they get itchy feet. Hindsight says that some of the deadlines for finishing those cars would have aggravated the purist in him. Perhaps if he had been offered a big chunk of business ownership then it might have swayed his opinion, but that's a moot point. In a small group there's always a potential banana skin if you're too reliant on one person and their presence is pretty much taken for granted.
Bad idea because then everybody will be doing the same thing
This can all be summed up very easily. Look at what Aaron drove off in. A regular mans work truck. But 100+ hours a week he had to build cars for Richards personal collection and customer cars. Richard made the money, reaped the major benefits, and Aaron just stayed humble and he saw how much Richard and the business changed around him and did what he had to do. Fast forward to today, Aaron is where he should be, highly respected and recognized by his own style.
A regular man's 80k work truck 🤣

Notice how Richard makes it about himself. I've been on both ends of this conversation, and I'm glad that they handled it as well as they did. It could've gone a lot worse than that.
Richard doesnt think that way... Thats the problem
When he said to the guys" yeah I mean 14 years working FOR me" that's the reason why not with you but for you.

He was the one building all this. The deadlines the producers put on these guys to make their shows more interesting is what destroys these builders.
I got the chance to meet Aaron at Arclight in Dallas when they were in the process of moving to their new shop back in 2019. I'd never heard of him, but my wife was a huge fan and was geeking out.
