- DAILY DOSE | Aryeh Deri is no stranger to controversy. As the leader of the national religious Shas party, Deri was jailed on corruption charges and has not shied away from speaking his mind. This time, Deri questioned whether Russian immigrants to Israel were really Jewish. Yisrael Beiteinu party elections candidate Alex Kushnir discusses with host Jeff Smith.
Story:
First came Avigdor Liberman, head of the secular-nationalist Yisrael Beytenu, party who unexpectedly declared that his party is going to demand the Ministry of Interior portfolio in the next government.
It's certainly a step down for a lawmaker who served as Minister of Defense until recently.
It's a big concession, but one carefully calculated. The Ministry of Interior is complement to the Ministry of Absorption which is traditionally almost always in the hands of Liberman’s party, which is still widely considered 'Russian' sectarian.
Both ministries play a pivotal role in the lives of newcomers to Israel. This time, Liberman raised a striking argument in his pursuit for the interior portfolio. He accused the interior ministry run currently by the ultra-Orthodox Shas party of performing DNA tests on Russian immigrants to verify their 'Jewishness'.
The Interior Minister and Shas chairman Aryeh Deri wasted no time in firing back at the accusation. During a campaign rally in the city of Ashdod, Deri not only admitted running those offensive tests, but took pride in being the gate-keeper of Judaism according to Israel's law of return, which offers automatic citizenship to the descendants of Jews.
'I would happily change the law, but for now I can at least make sure that only those entitled to immigrate to Israel - meaning only Jews according Rabbinical law or their off springs - can enter Israel,' he said.
On top of that, Deri cynically stated that the Ministry of Absorption was saturated by Russian speakers, implying that party in charge of the ministry (i.e. Yisrael Beytenu) was favoring Russian immigrants.
'Today, you can’t go around the corridors of the Immigrant Absorption Ministry unless you speak Russian,' Deri said. 'Enough. They should start speaking French and Amharic and other languages.'
As a result, Deri said, this time around Shas would demand both ministries.
'The ministry will no longer exist to serve immigrants from the Soviet Union,' Deri declared. 'It will be for those who make aliyah from France, and will be a home for Jews from Ethiopia.'
Deri's tirade raised questions as to whether it marked the beginning of a new electoral war with racist overtones or just a political rivalry typical to the run-up to elections.
The answer is neither. The two have been good friends for almost two decades, dating back a supportive phone call from Deri to Liberman when he first became the subject of a police investigation.
Deri, experienced himself with such police affairs, called him to say 'don’t worry; the more investigations, the more seats in parliament.'
His prophecy proved true for many years (and the court eventually dropped all charges against Liberman). Both parties grew through Liberman’s investigations and though Deri’s imprisonment.
In 2019, however, both parties find themselves in political dire straits. Twenty years after establishing Yisrael Beytenu, Liberman, once the leading politician of the 'Russian street' faces a real danger of not passing the electoral threshold.
Deri, once the undeniable king of the Sephardi orthodox community in Israel, is projected to earn barely five seats in recent polls - a far cry from the 17 seats it occupied in 1999 elections, the very same year Liberman founded his party.
In 2019, the two do what good friends do: they come to each other’s rescue.
Liberman’s attack on Shas, much hated by Russian immigrants in Israel who blame the hardships of their absorption on the interior minister, is a last-ditch call for the party's defecting voters to join Shas in the struggle against the secularization of the Jewish State.

I have questioned why they have moved to Israel and stayed there while not even celebrating Hannukah but celebrating New Year's Eve. As a secularist person, I liked Russian community of Israel the most when I visited there. (This is a positive comment about Russian sprakers and I condemn that racist religious extremist guy who definitely lacks intellectual capacity that Russian speakers have)
You have to understand that following the Russian Revolution of 1917 Russians and Soviet people underwent a tyranny that made it impossible for them to celebrate their religion. Secularism was forced upon everybody and you were at risk of death. There were no churches no synagogues almost nothing.

I got middle eastern(south west) DNA in me but I have no idea if its cause my bio grandfather was referred to as a Jew(he was an atheist) or if its from my Indian/Swedish Great Grandmother since its common in the North of India. Well here it comes again. Is judaism a tribe - in which you are born into. Or is judaism a religion? Most of the times you get the feeling that it's just a religion. If you are born into a nationality because you have ancestors that were Jewish - then you are Jewish. It cannot be changed by not adhering to a certain rule of a specific nation. A German that hates beer and shnitzl won't be perceived as any less German, right? Because it's a nationality. @@morchario This was true of the [vast majority of] Soviet jews who made aliyah to Israel in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Today, almost all the "jews" left in the former Soviet Union are mixed. Also, a one-quarter jewish person can bring his whole [non-jewish] family to Israel. But like I said, I don't really have a problem with this. In the long term, these people will be Judaized if they immigrate to Israel, they will also make productive citizens.
