I already have the PinePhone & PinePhone Pro I need to review, and would love to compare them to the Librem 5 - but here's where things are at so far on the journey! *Leave your feedback below! (Pst. you should give SailfishOS a whirl, it's not a ROM but a full linux distro from Jolla that uses android drivers through libhybris (also has native signal client Whisperfish), android compatibility layer is optional and you need to buy a license for it, but there's plenty of native apps so not really needed, it's completely google free and quite mature (oh forgot to mention if you do want to buy a license vpn might be needed as US is not officially supported)

I have had a similar experience, and it didn’t help, obviously, that I ordered my Librem 5 a few months after the timeframe you noted. What’s worse, to me, is that Purism keeps reaching out for “investment opportunities” - and, they also offer a discount on the LIbrem 5 USA for customers holding orders for the non-USA mace Librem 5s. I’ve written angry emails, etc. and nothing changes. I’m not giving Purism a single dime until they deliver the Librem 5 they originally promised.

UPDATE: Purism JUST emailed me yesterday that my Evergreen Librem 5 is ready to ship. I could have chosen to defer to Fir batch or demand a refund instead at that point but I decided to just accept the shipment to avoid the hassle and/or waiting longer to be made whole. They replied that I will get a tracking number soon!
Thank you for speaking up about this! I ordered mine in January 2019 and still don't have one either. The purism subreddit shows others being denied refunds as well, and some actually only getting their refunds if they basically threaten a lawsuit to purism. Makes me really tempted to start the process myself with the way this has been going, especially since I have a pinephone and pinephone pro at this point.

First of all: Thank you for backing a project that funded a lot of important software development!
I backed the phone in late October 2017 and got mine this March (after having purchased one of an earlier backer in late January 2021 before, because a) 400 EUR b) impatient.)
I agree that Purism’s communication has not been great, but if anything, they managed to deliver at the time they estimated in late 2021 and generally seem to be finally able to catch up.
Still, waiting sucks. But there are upsides to this: Looking at both my Librem 5’s, they seem to iterate things a bit - my 2022 Librem 5 feels better than the one made in 2020. And software… it’s still nowhere near perfect, but boy is it better than it was in early 2021!
Regarding PINE64’s warnings: Not many people seem to read those properly! 😂

I own a Librem 5. I thought I noticed what was going on and waited several years. I bought used third party Evergreen and received within a week. I am happy with the product for what it was, I wasn't expecting much though considering its running basically glorified automotive hardware. I however almost ended up in your shoes, where I would have spent $699 in xmr and would have waited years to get it. Signal Desktop is passable, not for your average user though. Been trying to Session Messenger arm builds but its not quite there.

    • @randomdude6408
      @randomdude6408 2 роки тому +6

Also, if you are a power user, this phone runs pretty warm... The battery life is passable but don't expect much. I would imagine I set my expectations so low though for a first gen phone I wasn't expecting much. Getting developers on board where every app can be converged from phone to desktop vice versa is asking much. VoLTE is also really broken. It will take photos but not videos. Although I believe the Pinephone Pro is in the same boat with no videos unless I'm mistaken. It does accomplish the tin foil hat privacy level though with user replaceable modems and wifi/bluetooth modules and hardware kill switches.

@@randomdude6408 Regarding Video: After having recently experimented with recording video on the PinePhone (Shell scripts, yeah), I really should try to do similar things with my Librem 5. Overall, the hard part with cameras is that aside for classic UVC webcams, the processing stack on GNU/Linux is not exactly mature - as laptop manufacturers switch to fancier cameras we need to move forward here anyway, and projects like libcamera are promising - it’s just a lot of work to make it work 😉

I think this story is best told 1 stepped zoomed out, which is that Purism took on the task of making an open-spec phone, and getting it running on open-source hardware. The reality of how difficult this would be, not only adapting linux to mobile (Phosh "desktop" environment is essentially Purism's work) but also FCC licencing - which if you know anything about the open-source/spec phone it's been a desire of the people for at least 20 years, and the FCC is usually the person who gets involved to crush any attempt at low-production-number radios that would fill that role - is really something that if you take a step back see how hard that would be, it's impressive that they were able to do that even at $1000 a phone. I couldn't do it for less, in my garage, shall we say.
But Pine are right to stay out of it and let other's do the software work while they focus on the hardware. The only issue is they aren't very good at the hardware. The Pro has this massive bug in the charging (has to be on if charging, booting up however can draw too much power if battery flat, so phone bootloops indefinitely) which is not something software can fix. The radio Qualtel isn't the most open source, it's basically a seperate ARM computer/OS running Linux all on its own, and it's all undocumented, but it can't do too much to the main Rockchip (so they say). The other hardware however has rubbish driver support in Linux, so it's not just the radio. But drivers are being written. And it's creating a harderned grassroots network of linux mobile developers. Interesting times

I've tried to get a refund numerous times, but if you look at the way back machine, you'll notice they changed the terms on which they'd give out refunds on pre-orders. At the time of my purchase, January 2019, you could ask for a refund whenever and it would be granted. I'd have to find the date again, but at some point after that, they changed the terms to say you can only ask for a refund on a pre-order when it's ready to ship.Which is precisely what I plan to do. However, I'm willing to bet they know this is going to happen en mass and try to figure someway to weasel out of it like they did with the change in refund terms.
Regardless, I actively warn people about them so they can avoid these headaches. That said, maybe there's enough of us here to start a class action lawsuit?

I got my first of 4 librem 5's today. Ordered back in 2018. Played around with it for a bit, and realized it's not recyclable, and has basically no market value...so I threw it in the trash.
Still waiting for my refund (after 7 months) on my Librem 14. Amazing the problems they are having when both System 76 (2 weeks) and Framework (3 months) could get me a laptop in less time than I've been fighting for a refund with Purism.
It's either gross incompetence or blatant criminal activity. Either way, the FTC should shut them down.

I ordered a Librem 5 on the 13th of May 2020, and it was just delivered to me last week, the 2nd of Feb 2024.
Useless company wouldn't give me a refund which I asked for many times too. Took almost 4 years to deliver it! 😤

I'm also a bit annoyed about how they communicated the situation and the FCC part was new to me. But there are some arguments to be made in there defense.
    1. When I ordered (I think it was also in 2019) it was clear to me, that software would be lacking and some apps I were used to wouldn't work. In regards to messaging they only promised SMS and Matrix I think. An Android emulator was not promised, but advertised as theoretically possible. Also you could have Signal (maybe some features are missing), by running a Matrix Server with a Signal bridge at home.
    2. The software for the Librem 5 is really progressing and a lot is done by Purism on the software side. I doubt the Pinephone would have been such a success without Purism's software. At least it wouldn't be at the state it is now with Purism's software. Especially Phosh wouldn't be there. Although it might have been a mistake by Purism to not join forces with the Plasma team, but instead developing their own interface. Pine64 is just not developing software (besides donating 10 USD or so per unit) and can therefore sell their devices a lot cheaper.
    3. Purism uses a NXP chip which is also used in the automotive industry. The chip used in the Pinephone Pro would have been an (similarly free) alternative, but wasn't available at the time Purism started with the Librem 5. I think they once wrote a large article why they have chosen this chip. And you can't just redevelop the whole thing using a new chip. So I believe their claims about the supply chain issues, because the automotive sector has the same problems currently. The lead time for many new cars (because of supply chain issues in electronics) currently is around one+ year in Europe... The FCC part may have been a blocker for some pre-orders, but not for a lot.
Also the killer argument for the Librem 5 in my opinion are the easily accessible hardware switches for microphones, cameras and radios. No other phone provides that (easily accessible).

Took me almost 2 years to get mine. PureOS store has very limited app selection. Can't install snap store. It's a privacy focused phone but doesn't yet support Signal messenger or Brave browser. Got NordVPN installed but it was a major ass pain. The nail in the coffin is that it doesn't support 2FA apps such as Authy. Texting works. Haven't even tried making phone calls yet. Might try installing a different mobile Linux OS instead of sticking with PureOS.

I actually cancelled my order, and got my money back...The big issue for me was Purism couldn't guarantee that USB Type C Alternate Mode DisplayPort out would work...and the phone is a BRICK! As I understand it, this USB Type C has been dropped by later Linux kernels...so I assume USB Type C DisplayPort output doesn't work any longer on the Librem 5 phone.

3:29 do you have any proof of this. It's two entirely different supply chains, unless you can definitively prove it's canibalizing any earlier orders, why should anyone assume it is. It's literally an entirely different supply chain, why would it, in any way, effect orders on a completely different supply chain.

I pre-ordered a Librem 5 too, but cancelled it years ago when it became clear they weren't going to deliver. I've been daily driving SailfishOS for many years and I'm pretty happy with it. Linux based, runs on "normal" phones, there's a terminal, Sony phones officially supported.
The SFOS gesture UI is _really_ nice, I much prefer it to android. It has an app for signal. I assume there's an app for keepass, I prefer GNU pass myself, which is supported.
The browser isn't great (it's not as terrible as it used to be). The software ecosystem is sparse but meets my minimal needs. Features people expect may be missing (eg. no way to block numbers). Nextcloud integration is present but flaky. Some parts of the OS are closed source. There's support for android apps, but YMMV, personally I don't bother with android app support because it tends to kill battery life... But it works!
Everyone seems to forget Sailfish when talking about Linux phones. I understand it's not for everyone, but I think it should at least be part of the conversation.

The video that Purism shows about "Data Leakage" was probably background app updates, Find My on the iPhone which is GENUINELY useful, backup services for restoration if your phone or SD card decides to crap the bed.... all these things, and they don't offer anything but 32GB of eMMC storage. Not even any quality tested, fast, NvME or UFS 3.1 storage. It blows my mind. If your phone or your SD decides to take a vacation, you're done. All of everything is gone if you had it encrypted from the information I can gather. I mean, I wish I could say something positive about this device, but try to find one comparison video between the Librem and any other phone. The little A53 cores are screaming for breath while Apple is just breezing through high-end 4K video editing and exporting, with Android and the rest of the ARM world coming closer and closer. Unless they want to put serious effort into this device, it's a complete bomb at $2000 USD. That's criminally insane to ask that price unless you know nothing of what you bought and blindly were guided to click buy now somehow. I don't get it. Maybe someone could give me some further insight? Because user data can be highly encrypted on-device without having to be treated like literal (and they said it): Uranium. They treat it like a highly radioactive source.

Sorry for the poor English, but you said it all!
I'm from oversea and was looking this kind of tech like Librem-5, Bittium touch mobile 2 without Google, a real nice looking device! (better was 2-c without Google as a option), and PRIV-2.0 by Blackphone with dual custom rom like the Bittium 2-C but even better because no Google, only the hardware is plastic and for me a minus.
Back on topic, I didn't pre-order the Librem-5 because thinking about the price, that time was around $999,- ex shipping and tax so I continue my search but keep a eye on the Librem-5, read some of the "victoms" on different fora, and I can say even without the pre-order I feel real sick see that company can't deliver, then we all had our story about COVID, then they still continue take pre-orders, coming up with a "new" model USA made so double price but better in many way's, lol.
Apple phone's used bij half the world also made out USA so no excuse for the upgrade model wich still has cpl year old tech inside. It is almost how you telling us in the video, you and all the others paid for create the "new Librem-5 USA model" but in another way you think, he took the first pre-orders money and start his luxery life, if he was serious about all this, forget the delay from other country, he should have FIX the problems and bugs from the Librem-5 what already delivered to some out there, how many years he didnt do any thing? And about the Librem-2000 is a better name, for sure he makes enough provit to pay the persons what canceled the first pre-orders. So the company name is stil trustful and not stealing money because you can get a payback, UNTIL ALL OF YOU ASK FOR THIS, but until then people stil believe and pre-order or order from they. Like filling the hole with sand but that create a new hole. With this kind of bussines the people never take the step to leave G. or A.

Just go for the ordinary Android phone. It is Linux based as well. Just go to developer mode and switch on "Don't keep activities". As soon as you leave an App it kills all actions so nothing is working in the background. As far as I know that does this: "Basically in layman’s terms Don’t keep activities is a function whose job is to kill every app as soon as the user comes out of it. This means that the Android has to load the app’s resources every time the user opens as it does not have the cached data or memory of that specific app to perform that task".
It wipes the cache and stops all activities of any app once the app is closed. No running in the background.
Combined with having disables data of the cellphone provider and WiFi switched all the time off and only manually on when it is used, should limit any spying of big brother drastically.
No need too much of an Linux phone unless you suffer under paranoia. Since even on Linux your Cellphone provider has a link to the phone and your ISP as well. That is why I switch off/on WiFi as I need it.

I still haven't received my librem 5 phone after ordering a phone from them in November 28, 2019.
After asking for a refund, they refused - even though they haven't even shipped the product to me - but offered to ship the product directly to me right away (what was the hold up) or offer me a voucher for their store. I would like to compel them to give me a refund if possible, since even if they were to ship the product to me now, the product would be close to obsolete. So disappointing.

The unfortunate part about Pine64 is that while their hardware is cheap, they do next to nothing in terms of helping software development for their devices. They throw hardware at the community and hope they'll do something with it. The software most people run on their PinePhones wouldn't have existed without Purism.
