You're thinking about US prices talking about the taxi prices. Almost all of them go by the meter which will be under $10 to get to pretty much anywhere along Sukhumvit. Instead of using the currency exchange, just use an ATM on the first floor.
By the way, taxi from airport to terminal 21 is around 300-400 baht. That’s $12 (+$2 airport fee), still less than $15. Unless it’s rush hours, I’d just take the taxi.

My recent visit, it took me less than 45 minutes to get through immigration and get my luggage. And it was busy! My taxi to an area not far from Asoke took 2 hours. Train is better. Just carry a rolling suitcase, and preferably medium-sized.

One of the truly amazing and fascinating things about Thailand is, that it is very advanced in many ways with high tech, skyscrapers and some of the world's best shopping malls; yet, it maintains its incredible culture, simplicity and old world appeal as well. It really has something for everyone and no wonder it's a magnet for tourists from all over the world.
The Solaria hotel, right across from you, has a great rooftop bar. From there, you will have a nice view of your pool and T21. Other fabulous rooftop bars on or off Sukhumvit: Tichuca, Belga, Char and Bar.Yard. Bar.Yard just might be my favorite. Get to them by 5 PM to enjoy the skyline in the daylight, then hang out till sunset. Tichuca requires a photo ID. Enjoy your time. I just subscribed.

How long did it take you to clear immigration
Considering the lines were worse than anything I've seen in Disney World, they knocked it out pretty fast. Fingerprinted and sent on my way.

Never been there but I heard Bangkok is the NYC of Southeast Asia. You can go to any country directly using the largest airport.

Actually you can stop Makkasan airport link station then walk to subway Phetchaburi station only 1 stop to Asoke,Phayathai too far.
