Up here in The Great White North we have a great selection of "Junk" silver to choose from. There is plenty of %.50 / %.80 and even %.925 sterling. I got my start in stacking in 1965 with Sterling Canadian Half Dollars provided by my Grandma. They were still in use and circulation in 65, and she would gather them from the till at the movie theater where she ran the snack bar, and my uncle was the projectionist .... Ahhhh yes ... the good'ol days. ... :)

I love stories like yours! Those were the golden days. Wow, didn't know Canada had sterling coins. Highest grade circulated coin in my opinion. One thing the Brits got right. Spain got close to it with the Reales, pieces of eight. The idea of dividing their coins was brilliant and many did this to make change way out in the new territories that used them for money.
I have a goal of 10,000 Kennedy 40% halves and just about at 5,000 pieces now. The coin is easily recognized, probably not counterfeited, and the space to store is not all that much different. But the big thing that makes a difference is the premium over spot. So, assuming silver is at $25.50 (May 9, 2023), you can spend $10,000 on silver eagles at SD Bullion and come up with about 220 silver eagles, or you can spend $10,000 on Kennedy 40% halves and get 2,624 pieces and 388.05 troy ounces. When it comes time to sell, silver would necessarily have to move +$15/oz (up to spot price $40.50) to approximately breakeven on the silver eagles. ((Hope you thought about that, friends)). Meanwhile, at silver spot of $40.50, even if the worst buyer will pay spot minus $4 dollars ($36.50), you would get $14,163.50 for your 2,624 Kennedy 40% halves.
There’s a reason premiums are higher on 90% and pure silver - stackers love them! 40% - not so much. Not to mention refineries don’t want the 40% because it’s more expensive to melt.
I have been buying a lot of these halves. I keep hearing that silver is silver. In this case, the silver is cheaper than most of the other fractional silver that is available. And, usually they are pretty nice coins. And, its a really good feeling when you have a lot of them. Thanks so much for an amazing video.
Much appreciated Seeker. I was going to email you asking that you did a video on 40’s. I have been roll hunting for about 9 months and in that time I have found and stacked just under 200 40’s. Like you mentioned in the video, they do take up a lot of space so I was hoping to get other opinions on if it is better to sell it and reinvest into bullion or even 90%. My thought has been, and I think that your video confirmed it, is that I am better off holding the 40’s. I knew that selling I would get less than spot for them and then have to pay a premium to upgrade to another form of silver, therefore paying money to have less silver in my stack. Even though I only paid face value for them, I am not in any hurry to lose money on them. Just a bit of input on selling though, folks are getting $65.00 to $75.00 plus shipping per roll of $10.00 face on eBay. Factoring in eBay fees, this equates to getting between $5.53 - $6.38 per dollar face. Making that a better option if you want to deal with everything involved in listing and shipping them. Even still, I think that I will continue to hold them.
I was completely unaware that 40% half dollars had two layers. That explains why an OG sigma sees them as pretty much the same as 90%. Thank you for educating me!
For some reason, many overlook or don't count the stacking bonus of having free copper every time you buy 40% half dollar coins. For the same $3.40 face in 40% half dollars, there is the 1 oz SILVER mentioned & 1.5 oz of free copper. Many people would pay $2-3 for that amount when they buy 1 oz copper rounds. Since we are stacking for the long term and also have other barter silver items, these are excellent for deep stacking--when all coins are melted and the copper is much higher in price as well. I believe that 40% will close the gap on 90 once copper penny lovers reach this logic. Curious on some of those locals. Next video, ask how much they sell them for. I believe you will find some cheaper than SD bullion.
Back when copper was going through the roof, people were asking for the best ways to stack it. Well, this is it. You're essentially buying silver near spot, and getting copper thrown in for free.
And I believe copper will rise in value into the future. China is major producer and is hording copper now. Copper rounds and even bars are ridiculously over priced. So, the trend has already begun.
IN the ''event'' that copper skyrockets, then these 40% Kennedy halves (should ) gain a higher premium over spot. As for my stacking, the 40% Kennedy is a fraction of bars and other stuff, but the 40% stack is approaching 5,000 pieces.
I don't think 40% is good for stacking but it can be utilized. When Silver hit $30 recently I traded it up for fractional gold. So I do believe if used correctly there is definitely an edge you can find. It just goes to show the mindset and you're strategy is crucial

Those 40 percent do take up a lotta space. I needed more safe so some of them had to find a new home. Sometimes the small things get overlooked until the last minute.
ive been buying 40 percent lately now that premiums are really high on 90 percent and ASEs... i can still get 40 percent at just over spot....so until silver prices go back down im loading up on 40 percent and also buying more world silver,,,,80 percent canadain is still reasonable for example...and if you look hard eough you can find a good proce on that certian collectors piece youve been eyeing..i mean you may as well buy siver you like if generic is expensive premiums...ya know gl!
Smart ones will. I do! Each type of silver will have it's advantages and disadvantages. The shiny stuff makes you an easy juicy target. The humble will go a long ways when it counts the most.
I was born in 1969, so I bought a couple rolls to get a few coins from my birth years. When silver gets back up to $30 or so I’ll probably sell all the non 1969s
The only reason why I would consider buying/hunting 90% or 40% is because of its flexibility, collectability, and the thrill of the hunt. Like silver eagles it's both fiat and silver. However unlike silver eagles, 90% and 40% are no longer produced and the people who took them kept them so not many left circulating which drives their premium high. Even higher than eagles some might say. I went hunting recently around small town banks and out of 500$ only found 6 40% and 1 walker 90% (1937 and I was lucky or someone planted it). So would I buy 40% or 90%? I personally, NO. The silver ratio and premiums are crazy and I would save more money buying 1k dollars worth of 10 oz bars then I would buying 1k dollars of 90% let alone 40% but that's only because I buy silver for silver not the collectability of 90% and 40%.
At $18.55 spot (JM's Spot) JM Bullion sells them for $6.37 per dollar of FV, and buys them $5.14 per dollar of FV provided you sell them $1,000 worth of silver. So they are selling it for $3.04 over spot and buying it for $1.13 below spot provided you sell them $1,000 worth of silver.
I wouldn’t buy them, maybe hunt them in rolls instead. Especially seeing how the premiums on junk went thru the roof. On 7/13/22 I purchased a $5 face value role of dimes for $96.06. The spot price on that day was $19.13 Today the spit price is $18.37 and the same roll of dime is $113.11 Spot dropped and the premium went up $17?? Make it make sense 🤔 I’m done with silver for now. It’s become ridiculous
Remember the spot price is based on paper that represents silver. Physical silver is the real thing and why it costs more because of the premiums. Spot plus the premiums are more the true price of silver. We want silver to go up; well it is via the premiums.
@@langjr0 Try getting your money back when you sell it at these ridiculous premiums. Not sure about you but I don’t like being down so much $ at the onset. The premiums do not represent the true value of silver.
. it seems if you can sell it to be melted. It’s worth stacking. Because of the low premium I stacked a crap load of Kennedy’s. Who cares about space with low premiums like this ,right ? But there’s a catch. nobody melts them ? So what good are they ?
Hello, I have been wanting to try and getting a $100 or $500 box of half dollars from my bank. What are some of the key items I need to tell my bank? Circulated versus uncirculated? Do I have the option of picking an average date or time they were created? do I have the option of picking a particular mint? sorry for the questions but I am green to this hobby. Can you walk me through the start and finish process of acquiring a box of half dollars and then returning them to the bank? Thank you
You don't get to choose anything at all at your bank. They don't look at all the halves and sort them according to dates, etc. That's not the job of a bank, LOL they are not coin DEALERS. They just give you the rolls of coin.....what's in them is a random mystery.
@@customer9845 I'm happy to hear that! I know orders from their eBay store ship quickly. Hopefully they've been able to tune up their website fulfillment as well!
40% seems like an odd and slightly miserable silver content. Australian Florins from 1946 to 1963 had 50% (down from 92.5%), and no one collects them for their silver value. The sterling ones are sought after however. Anything below 80% seems like an undesirable choice.
Couldn't agree more! Why would anyone stack low percentage stuff when they can have high percentage stuff? Demand drops off considerably for anything lower than 80%.
I stack lots of the silver proof state and atb quarters and silver proof Kennedy's. Anything with some numismatic value is going to hold its value much better than junk silver.
I’ll stick to hunting and trying to get it for free. To me it’s not worth it. Even at a lower premium the hassle of storing and attempting to sell large quantities. Plus if a shop had a lot of other inventory they may not even want your 40% or be offering way less. Just a thought
And now the premiums just went up on 40% Kennedys. I love all of the info that streamers put out but I believe it is directly causing premiums to increase. Spot doesn't really move too much so the premiums are an excuse jack up prices. I don't mean to be negative here (and this isn't against SS as he has been quite honest with his opinion of silver) but it seems like the tubers that keep harping silver going $100 already have significant amounts of silver. Reddit anyone? We as regular peeps can't affect spot but we can affect premium prices. And now SDB is out. LOL!

40% silver is not of interest to refineries, as I understand it, so I would say absolutely no. The silver content is simply too low. Stay with 80% and up.
Not thinking long enough term bud. Sure, SILVER when it's undervalued and held down for 50 years does have a disadvantage for a refinery melting it. But, when the real value is shown, there will be hoards of places wanting to melt silver plating for a shaving. #BOOM

I wouldn't mind stacking 40% but I'd rather get 90% while I could and then take what I could get.
ive been buying 40 percent lately now that premiums are really high on 90 percent and ASEs... i can still get 40 percent at just over spot....so until silver prices go back down im loading up on 40 percent and also buying more world silver,,,,80 percent canadain is still reasonable for example...and if you look hard eough you can find a good proce on that certian collectors piece youve been eyeing..i mean you may as well buy siver you like if generic is expensive premiums...ya know gl!
Great info but unfortunately most people don't want it
Smart ones will. I do! Each type of silver will have it's advantages and disadvantages. The shiny stuff makes you an easy juicy target. The humble will go a long ways when it counts the most.
Dealers want to pay less than Spot for 40%. Also, they take out the same room as 90% in the safe!😉
This channel is so dope!!!!
I was born in 1969, so I bought a couple rolls to get a few coins from my birth years. When silver gets back up to $30 or so I’ll probably sell all the non 1969s
They take up more space, though I guess it's better than just clad.
My LCS offered me 2x face value for a tube of 40% was selling a tube for $90
Whaaa!? That’s should be criminal.
Obama gold is worth more but I just love the colors of silver more! I definitely get them when I come across them!
absolutely. I bought a bu roll of them for 40$!!
Very interesting!
well, now that you gave away what I was doing for a low premium can you do this video on war nickels?
Nice video!
Sweden used after World War II 40 percent ex. 25 Øre coins too.
At least majority of 40% Kennedies are barely circulated but lot of people clean them unfortunately
I wouldn’t buy them, maybe hunt them in rolls instead. Especially seeing how the premiums on junk went thru the roof.
On 7/13/22 I purchased a $5 face value role of dimes for $96.06. The spot price on that day was $19.13
Today the spit price is $18.37 and the same roll of dime is $113.11
Spot dropped and the premium went up $17??
Make it make sense 🤔
I’m done with silver for now. It’s become ridiculous
Remember the spot price is based on paper that represents silver. Physical silver is the real thing and why it costs more because of the premiums. Spot plus the premiums are more the true price of silver. We want silver to go up; well it is via the premiums.
@@langjr0
Try getting your money back when you sell it at these ridiculous premiums.
Not sure about you but I don’t like being down so much $ at the onset.
The premiums do not represent the true value of silver.
Best silver channel
I love stacking 40s and war nickels
Few are smart enough to. You're ahead of the herd!
.
it seems if you can sell it to be melted.
They just give you the rolls of coin.....what's in them is a random mystery.
my issue with 40% is that resell value and liquidity being much lower, in my area people only buy it by the pound
Yes. The higher silver goes the more demand for 40%.
Scottsdale silver is selling 2020 Congo Silverback Gorilla Coin tubes for $445.21 (or 22.26 per troy oz). They run specials like that every so often.
That is a great deal... The problem with Scottsdale is you order it today and you might have it by mid-November.
@@5crazykids74 sometimes that does happen but my last 4 orders with Scottsdale have shipped in a week
@@customer9845 I'm happy to hear that! I know orders from their eBay store ship quickly. Hopefully they've been able to tune up their website fulfillment as well!
Very Nice 👍
Thats a lot of Copper and Silver you have Copper is another valuable metal itself.
Exactly... copper will go way up
Basically a 40% half dollar has same silver as 2 worn silver dimes. Approx.
SD Bullion sales after this 📈
They’re already sold out
Ha ha! I forget to hit record sometimes. It's annoying to shoot a video and realize you have to do it all over again. 😂
I stack 50 percent Australian silver for 7 percent premium
Junk silver is going through the roof! Don’t know much about 40%. But I’m all about some BU 90%
I stack lots of the silver proof state and atb quarters and silver proof Kennedy's. Anything with some numismatic value is going to hold its value much better than junk silver.
With today's prices of $25 spot, bags of 40% silver are working out to $30.17 per oz. Not a good buy imo.
Everybody shop I go to pays more for sterling than 40% halves... nuff said
There is so much other desirable silver to buy rather than 40% halves, and it certainly isn't as liquid as 80% and above stuff.
Great video. But I think they’re too heavy. Thank you take care👍
Good info, I bet alot of people including me do didn't know these facts.
Up here in the northeast my lcs wants to give you $5 for 3 40% halves. Claims no one comes in the shop looking for them.
I’ll stick to hunting and trying to get it for free. To me it’s not worth it. Even at a lower premium the hassle of storing and attempting to sell large quantities. Plus if a shop had a lot of other inventory they may not even want your 40% or be offering way less. Just a thought
Interesting, I did not know that 40 percent Kennedy coins where actually copper In the center.
LOL!
Where did you get the little chest?
If it is illegal to deface us currency how can constitutional silver realy be worth its weight in silver?
You can melt 90% Silver all you want and legally
Ive been enjoying watching your videos for the past year and I recently started my own channel about collecting money and wondered if you could give me a shout out it would mean the world to me your my favorite UA-camr
40% silver is not of interest to refineries, as I understand it, so I would say absolutely no. The silver content is simply too low. Stay with 80% and up.
The intent isn't really to have it refined to be fair
Not thinking long enough term bud. Sure, SILVER when it's undervalued and held down for 50 years does have a disadvantage for a refinery melting it. But, when the real value is shown, there will be hoards of places wanting to melt silver plating for a shaving.
#BOOM
Refineries are going to discount the 80% silver Canadian coins also!😉
@@SilverSeeker I'm thinking it really is, if and when you need to cash out? Unless it also has collector value or so? 🤔
@@viperracing2889 you can sell them as 40%ers (showed that in the video actually)... they don't need to be refined to be resold.
Do you buy them seeker?
When I get a good deal yes
I had $750 worth of half dollars. My coin dealer didn't even want them. So I turned them into the bank and bought gold. I also have $200 isenhowe r dollars and my coin dealer doesn't want them either. I do still have them.
I would have bought those Eisenhower's. They're one of my favorite are you selling them ?
Thank you !... Thank you!...Thank you!
I have good amount of 40% already
My LCS sells them for $2.50 each
Yeah, and what is the buy price I wonder?
Stacker boxes in canada?
Silver is silver,,, but stacking 40% is just so heavy!!!!
I went to bank and ended up getting 11 of them in a search of $50 of half dollars
