It is true. Watch out in particular for various "Christian" style orphanages that get funding from various religious groups and have fake "pastors" running the homes who exploit the children. Many do have relatives but they are very poor and often get cheated into giving their kids to the orphanage by being told they will get food and an education.

@23:00 “it’s like being abandoned over and over again” 😞 vice interviewed a “voluntourist” and at least she admitted that she did voluntourism to make herself look and feel good. But think about bonding and abandoning children 😞 filling them with hope, then smiling and saying “bye!”. The amount of pain children in those homes felt 😞

This is a human petting zoo. That's exactly what it is, and yes it's harmful to the children. From having strangers pawing at them to the fact someone broke up their family.

I thought people knew these kids had families….this isn’t new. The fact these elite people didn’t realize that is beyond me. I’m glad that one woman is talking about this and trying to inform the public. What they need to be doing is helping the parents of these children have better opportunities.

    • @jaelzion

It's also not unique to Cambodia. Thousands of Irish kids grew up in "industrial schools" even though they had one or both parents living. Sometimes the parents brought them there voluntarily because they couldn't provide for them and sometimes authorities took the children away from parents deemed to be immoral or unfit. There was a whole industry around profitably adopting these kids out (often to the US). Australia also had its share of orphanages and industrial schools where children were dumped (one nicknamed the "Sunbury Slaughterhouse" because 10% of the children died. Then there's the history of the US and Canada taking native/first nations children from their families and forcing them into residential boarding schools where they were often traumatized and abused. I agree with you that the best way to help is to enable families to stay together by making it possible for parents to support and raise their children.

In the U.S., parents who found themselves trying to raise a child or two too many could "sell" unwanted children to the state. It was like a bounty system, associated with the "eugenics" movement. The parents would contact the authorities, and, based upon the most arbitrary of reasons ("my child won't do his chores", etc.) the child would be taken to a mental health facility where they would be warehoused, usually for the remainder of their natural lives. And the parents would receive compensation from the state for each child that was "sold" in this manner- a bounty. To this day, you can still find victims of this cruel practice in most mental health facilities across the country, sitting in tray chairs, abandoned by society, heavily medicated, waiting to die.

I went to an orphanage in india, all the kids had parents, because we ask the director and he told us. But still it called an orphanage because this place was taking care of them way better than their family, they were obliged to go to school, do their homeworks they had food everyday, could take a shower. I think Americans and other have a " white saviors" complex and want so much to be passed as a "good person" than they forgot to ask the good question. They’re parents just couldn’t look after them properly and decided they would have a better life in an orphanage. It was the same system for kids with no parents and kids with parents who just couldn’t look after them. It doesn’t surprise me that they have living parents. Nowadays lots of countries have foster care and group homes but a group home is basically just a modern orphanage.

To be fair, most of the orphanage signs say, "Poor, street children, and orphans." And the fact that all the signs also encourage tourists to stop by and even have _gift shops_ makes it clear that it's about profits. Anyone who falls for their trap is just naive or ignoring the signs.

Very good video. I think you should've gone more into the atrocities of pol pot. That directly would affect the parents decisions too I'd think. It's sad that even when you think you are helping, you aren't. Most agencies that claim to help keep most of the money and ultimately don't help.

in Malaysia we had 2 phrase for Orphan.. the full orphan is call "Yatim Piatu" while if still have one of the parent it call "Yatim".. now the name that used to call orphanage in Malaysia is "Rumah Anak Yatim" literally mean "House for Yatim Kids" sooo.. go figure.. Now.. Malaysian goverment giving monthly fund to Orphan and Full orphan + The mother of orphan also got different fund.. so it make no sense IMHO to send you "yatim" kid to Orphanage in this country.. but still.. it happen.. and they being send around to restaurant to ask for donation.. it always saddened me to see this kid move from table to table to sell knockoff item, tissue or just straight up asking for donation, when in actuality they being taking care very well by Our Goverment.

An orphanage is a good example of a corrupt country or business/company, the higher ups receive the money while they profit from the poor or the most vulnerable. None of the money goes to the poor nor the place- the orphanage looked like a dump even though they were making a lot of money. Also, seeing that “tourist” bus visiting that orphanage was disgusting and just shows how they profit from them.

If you look at the " We are the World " projekts in the mid 80s..to help Ethiopia..We as kids had to go around the street asking fir donation to help them..and we had to fast for 2 days( that didnt matter)..but it was a HUGE thing to get ppl to donate..the African pictures we were shown were deeply heartbreaking..I believe i was 10..I lived in Australia at that time). I always wondered why are we STILL donating..nothing has reallyyy changed for these precious ppl. I mean not in 40 years..its still going. I believe the money we send..isnt helping because their own governments arent changing..and why should they..( in their minds)..Other countries are sending money and then they have enough for weaponary and what else. Very evil and cruel😢. Look at all the wars around the world..all the news..big leaders begging us all for money and support. I would Love to donate to a REAL organisation rg children..but who can you trust sadly? The bad ppl have made that very hard. Peace and love to these families.Bless 🙏🕊🕊🕊🕊❤

I can understand a parent not being able to feed their child so I can see why they put them in an orphanage. However, the focus should be helping the community with the children in the parent’s homes not in orphanages. In that way, the parents can get grants to start an entrepreneurial skills, etc. by NGOs

Great documentary. I've seen this voluntourism industry thriving these last decades in Cambodia. Young western volunteers as well as cambodian kids are both victims of this evil industry. Too bad the documentary doesn't show the young christian missionnaries pushing this khmer children to convert. This is also a big issue in this voluntourism business that has to be revealed.

Prayers for all children and animals this is so sad .

I don't fully agree with this documentary. This is not the solution to the problem, neither is having orphanages and stopping the foreign donations to civilians in need in Cambodia. Instead of orphanages they can build centres for poor kids to go and learn, eat but in the end of the day they have to return to their homes. Did you guys notice how happy and protective that kid was to her teddy bear that she left it back home because she felt it was one of the most valuable things she possessed. So in my opinion keep supporting and donation to poor families in Cambodia. Be the reason to bring a little bit of smile in their lives.

I feel like the old guy is attacking the wrong people, I know he frustrated but these people thought they were doing good. Get the word out there that they are not, they're doing the opposite and spread it.
Not everyone who helps and donates do it "for a selfie" there are genuine people who are trying to do good things. It's ridiculous to insult and be angry at people who aren't educated. Educate them.
