this video is so slanted in favor of the Ottoman's . the Portuguese influence which was actually more significant in the Indian ocean is like an afterthought.
Most of the Portuguese territorys in India were lost in 1700. Whit the last 3 being given back in 1961 at the start of Portuguese colonial war in Africa. Macau in china was returned in 1999.
From 1498 to 1634 there were 917 portuguese armadas that sailed from Lisbon to India, that's 136 years, so we can assume by dividing 917 between 136 that it would be 6-7 voyages per year, it's probable some years it would be less and other more due to military armadas, but generally that would be the standard. 5 to 6 month vouyage because Africa is enormous and many people also seem to forget the world maps dont depict the true size of continents
8:30 The orders would have come from the Viceroy of India not the King of Portugal directly, and why they didn't turn back is most likely as far as they knew it would be largely unprotected and the ottomans would be caught of guard even after the severe setbacks, also likely hoping to raid since as you heard previously they lacked provisions due to the aforementioned unexpected events
Ottomans were fighting on 10 different fronts at any one time. If they had focused their attention on the Indian ocean Portuguese would not have had a chance. Portuguese were facing only a minor fraction of the Empire's power and resources, they performed admirably, but it should not be overblown.
The execution of Pitri Reis was a tragedy in my opinion. He was already in his last years when he was forced back into service after all those glorious years and a well deserved retirement. No wonder that he lost his nerve, he was already senile
