I have dabbled in locks my whole life from seeing my dad rekey to playing with safe locks and understanding how to handle them properly and how to drill them out if needed and not have having commercial tools because they’re locked away with an apprenticeship or degree makes you a better locksmith because you have to get it by yourself the tools by making them yourself

In NY metro area, the Mass unavailability of the well versed "old school" , knowledgeable , master locksmiths makes it pretty impossible to have any of that knowledge passed down to any Apprentice. Tons of them are retired and well removed from the trade or a large amount have unfortunately passed away and didn't pass on the knowledge, for whatever reasons. My experience has been that overall, unless oneself goes ahead and pays for courses at this point, one won't be very well rounded in the trade.

So true, the old guys are retiring and passing away, thats why appreterships are important for the industry in Australia, but if its not required the knowledge dose not get passed down and all kinds of issues popup

@DrLockShop absolutely, I agree with you 💯 percent. The skill and knowledge from the vets being passed down is unequivocally important. I can personally attest to this. I have worked with a couple of guys whom were younger than me , but they have actually Apprenticed under some of the vets who showed them sooo much, that These young guys actually became my teachers in a lot of situations in the trade. I have been lucky to have come across the right people in my short career. If not, I could become one of the maaaany run n gun , YT University graduates out here who lure customers in by offering unrealistic low price for services and then create a cluster fk of a mess and just dissappear leaving customers with 1. A bigger problem then what they initially had & 2. A mistrust that gets passed down to honest, true , devoted Locksmiths.

I would say someone who has completed a trade certificate, and / or spent more then 5 years training with master locksmith , that being a locksmith with 20 years + on the job.. Just my opinion
