Steven Stayner is the perfect example of what NOT to do when a long-term abducted child is found. The family, media, and police did exactly the wrong things when it came to his re-introduction to society. Contrast that to people like Jaycee Dugard and the Cleveland women. They made their media statements, then stayed out of the spotlight for however long they needed in order to process. They then came out and told their stories their way. They took control of the narrative. Elizabeth Smart is another good example.
Yes, they're remarkably brave women. There's also the case of the child who was abducted by his karate instructor and thankfully found safely alive. The case garnered nationwide coverage only to gain even more attention when the father shot and killed his son's abuser (caught on camera as I'm sure many have seen). The nightmare didn't stop after his father was convicted. The son thought his father was wrong to kill the man and it caused a rift in their father/son relationship however they were able to finally reconcile before the father died. (The son wrote a book about his experiences). These crimes affect so many innocent lives.
my mom always warned me & my siblings of stranger danger - one Chicago winter evening in 1970 - cold dark & snowing - my bro (9) was walking me (10) home from my saxophone lesson. It was only a few blocks, so our parents assumed it was safe. A man driving a car pulled up to us 2 young kids to ask for directions & then asked us to come closer to the car because he couldn't hear us. My brother and I looked at each other & screamed at the top if our lungs the entire run home. i'll always remember being scared af!
Executed would be better. Not "on death row but will die of natural causes after 40 years" kind of execution. But "oh we have 100% proof" and they take you behind the court house that day guillotine/hanging/firing squad etc.
I see so many Americans complaining about the "lax" sentences given out in other countries, yet it seems pretty obvious that no country is great at handing out appropriate punishments. Murderers are released after ridiculously short sentences everywhere. The pedophile in this story should NEVER have been released. Seven years for kidnapping, pedophilia, and rape ? Then, as a lovely cherry on top, he was released after only FIVE !!!!????!!
When I first saw “I Know My First Name is Steven” in 1989, it really messed with my head. I went into a deep depression. I couldn’t believe so much injustice could exist. I’m the same age as Steven … but I lived a dream life compared to him. Then shortly after seeing the movie, I learned of his tragic death … and I sunk into a deeper depression. I mean this whole story impacted me in such a way that I struggled to believe in goodness at all. I still mourn over all of this. The legal system really failed. His family really failed. Everything really failed poor Steven. I had no idea about his brother. Dang! And the little boy he saved - Timmy White - died in 2010 of a pulmonary aneurysm. It’s like everyone in this story lived in a vortex of evil. I wish I hadn’t watched this. You did a great job of telling the story, but I don’t think I can handle a relapse of the depression I felt back in 1989. 😭
There is still light in the world, you may have to look for it, but keep believing and looking. Stay strong for those that can’t, also be kind to yourself.
I read Steven's book almost 20 years ago. I still have it and his story has always remained with me. I had heard about the Yellowstone murders but didn't know he was Steven's brother. It always bothered me how Steven was so easily convinced that his parents no longer wanted him. Could this actually be an indication for his brother's disassociation? Not just with the need to remove himself from society but also from humanity?
Another very sad part of this story is that Timothy White (the other young boy that was kidnapped with Steven) died at a fairly young age also. He was 35-ish and a deputy in LA
I didn’t know this either. So sad. 😢😢😢 Had Parnell been arrested years before he ever saw Steven, I wonder if things would’ve turned out different for Steven. I’m sure he would still be alive.
Steven and Cary were both heartbreaking cases and I wonder how the family was able to go on. Steven was an innocent victim but Cary was a killer. Excellent video TCR.
I was a kid when I first saw the TV movie, "I know my first name is Steven." It truly broke my heart. My mom (RIP ma🕊🌹💗) talked to me that night & the next day. She said she remembered hearing the abduction and his escape to save another child. Such a hero. It's so heartbreaking & unbelievable those poor parents had a missing/saved child & the other a serial killer. It just truly breaks my heart for parents/victims. Prayers for all. RIP Angel's 🕊🌾🌟💝 Thank you for telling this horrific story & the light you shone on this absolutely unbelievable hellish story with profound insight as always. My parents' attitude was very much like the Stayner's when bad things happened: "It's over and done. Move on with your life and forget it happened." How my siblings and I remained sane is beyond comprehension. When I became a parent I went a different route and raised my children to talk to me--even if it was a deep dark secret. And I assured them that if I couldn't fix it, I would find someone who could. I believe circles are meant to be broken.
I just listened to the Murder In America podcast on this. The drivers car stalled in front of Steven’s motorcycle and it was proven to be an accident. The 3 months was for leaving the scene.
I grew up in Modesto, and was living there when Steven was found. It terrified the parents in the area. I remember being told warnings of not wandering off and “You don’t want to get snatched like Steven”.
I remember when Steven Stayner came home. Hearing that story and feeling like God had really moved to save those boys. Then Steven died, that made headlines. Then after I grew up, a Stayner made the headlines again. I remember my heart breaking all over again. Terrible and tragic, the whole thing.
Even though this happened in 1999, it's still resonates clearly in my mind. I went to Eureka High when the murders happened. It was an eerie feeling at school. Karen Mitchell went missing around the same time. I sat next to her in history class. Unfortunately, her case has never been solved.
It makes one wonder. Very rarely does a killer stay so calm and collect during their first kill, so that leads me to believe his first kills weren't Julie, Carol, and Silvina; there were others.
Amy, I love the way you tell a story, especially one that unraveled so tragically and how you give no leniency to this depraved monster, a "real life Cain"
I've heard of the brothers killings but I never knew the terrible things that happened to his brother. Such sadness hit that family. I hope the rest are doing alright.

I think this is the best way to talk about the brothers. I've heard each individual story and how they (the story teller) sorta staple the others story on the end of the others. We are not our family, we are not our parents or whatever, we can be our own person
That Stayner story is insane. I mean, if someone wrote a screenplay about it they'd be laughed out of the offices of any production studio b/c it's too implausible to happen. I know ppl also talk about Ted Bundy as a serial killer that was so handsome etc but Cary Stayner should get that title, best looking serial killer I've seen. That whole Stayner story could be an excellent field study in the whole nature vs nurture argument.
I saw the Hulu documentary. I remember watching I Know My First Name is Steven when I was a child. The documentary is so heartbreaking but very well done. Thank you for another great recap, Amy.
Amazingly told as usual! My odd 'connection' to this story is, I went to CA to visit a childhood friend who had recently moved there. We spent a great weekend hiking through Yosemite, cautious because the news was full of the disappearances but, no mishaps. We stayed in a beautiful motel with roaring rapids behind. It wasn't until years later, while watching a documentary about the murders that I realized we stayed at Cedar Lodge just before he took Joy and we saw him there! It was a truly eerie feeling!
One time, me and my friend were in a bathroom at the mall when I was in my 20s. We were throwing toilet paper all over in the bathroom. There was a man in the stall. We heard a man mumble, "Goddammit." Out walked JEFFREY DAHMER. We had no idea at the time he was who he was... but we recognized him immediately when we saw him on the news!

And then his brother turns into this killer who likes to hang out in his birthday suit smoking Mary Jane. And the father oh he was a good guy. Omg! I’ve heard of each of these cases, but never together! I never knew they were brothers in the same family. So hard to believe. Thanks so much for sharing and linking these two stories together for me.
Steven Stayner is an example of why I think parents letting kids walk home alone after school should be a crime and Carey is an example of how the government should provide psychological counseling for the returned victim and their families. I feel like If Carey had gotten help after his brother came back, these murders might have less likely happened
@ I understand that they went through that kind of trauma but not everyone who goes through it turns out to be a murderer. Something else was going on with Cary to make him into what he became
I love getting all the crime in half the time, I heard about the missing woman out there, mom and daughter. Now as they say, I know the rest of the story, great job!
I live down the street from where Steven Stayner was killed. I was surprised to see no marker or anything there. I didn't know much about the case as I was overseas during the escape etc.
I've seen I know my name is Steven such a great made for tv movie. And I heard the case about Cary Stayner but I was in total shock to find out that the killer was Steven Stayner's brother.
I can never understand kids being bullied extensively. If I were a teacher or a parent there’ll will be no way anybody would bully anybody. Zero tolerance for bullying. Teachers must notice kids being bullied. And look the other way? It’s so damaging.
I was bullied so badly that i was suicidal by age 9. One of them tried to set me on fire on the bus. Adults got more mad at me for any "overreaction" to it. There was no one who had my back, it sucked.
@@indiatastic I’m so sorry you had to go through such a nightmare without a grown-up to protect you. I wish I could have been there and take care of the bullies for you. Teach them a lesson they’’d never forget. Try to set you on fire, that’s pure criminal. I’m so sorry you got damaged that way. Shame on the people who let it happen and looked away. ❤️
This has SRA written all over it! Excellent dissertation! This case is insane! You’ve broke into a snippet of the back story . I’ve heard this case but I’ve never heard it at the way you’re presenting it! And it’s amazing you are a very talented writer and very astute in researching these projects and giving a premise to the crime. And by the way you look absolutely amazing! I love bangs and your haircut like this is perfect.
@@absinthemindedJ It’s really controversial but if you go deep into it and if you studied criminology, there is a very long history of the SRA. It is a thing and it’s very viable and most people don’t like to talk about it. And it’s really sad and unfortunate. But some people have come through it. Yay me
I can't believe the sentence the old man got for kidnapping the boy-5 years and the guy that committed the hit and run 3 months. Wow! It resulted in death. Those kind of sentences make you angry when you hear about the person getting charged again years later for the same offense
I know who Cary Stayner is. He’s the reason I keep a long knife under my pillow when I travel. No joke. I live in CA and this story was all over the news, newspapers, etc. I had no idea about his brother though.
I remember the movie based on Steven’s life, “I Know My Name is Steven.” Heartbreaking. And 7-year-olds shouldn’t be walking home alone. It’s never been safe. Not even in the “good ol’ days.”
His mom made him wait in the rain, while she did errands. She KNEW he was going to be TAKEN. So many of these people who sell out their own children. HIS FAMILY KNEW.
I live near the area. I wasn't born yet when the Stayner stuff happened. But I remember the Carol, Julie and Sylvina case. That was the biggest story in the area that year.
We’re from Washington state and friends and family still talk about Yellowstone and this case. It’s just one of those cases that seems so unbelievable but true.
Just wanted to say I think you are a great story teller. You give a lot of details and you have an entertaining personality. I also think you are very hot with the upmost respect lol. I'm a true crime fanatic and your channel is one of the better ones out there
Steven should have never went back to school, he have experienced all the crap that he got. From those kids. Shame on the parents for not giving him help when he needed, I think it’s was mostly the parents fault what happened to him afterwards and his death. If Steven only knew, what life going be like. Before he returned to his parents, after saving and rescuing little Timmy from his kidnapper. He probably never would return to his family, if he knew that his was going to end up like that.
Totally agreed, if you knew what was his life. Being returning back to his family, he probably better off staying with his kidnapper. At least he was more sort of felt loved and cared for, even though he was manipulation and brainwashed. At least he wasn’t treated bad, when he returned back to his family.
I have heard of them by a relative relaying the story to me when we were there. Then the movie came out “ I know my first name is Steven”. It’s tragic that to boys from the same family was so heartbreaking. Much love and respect from across the pond in Uk x
Hi Amy and Chris! Any time I feel like life is being unfair to me and me alone. I think of this case. Think of Steven. When he finally finds happiness and is living a good life with his wife and children. He’s coming home from work and is snuffed out. So unfair. After all the hell he had been through being kidnapped. And who knows what all he endured from that sick, disgusting man. Just isn’t right. And then his brother. He goes on to be a serial killer. Those poor parents. Yes, life is extremely unfair. And this case is proof of it. And I understand that it’s unfair. But sometimes you just wish the pendulum would swing more in the favor of good. ❤️💜💚

All the kids needed therapy but the parents didn't want that. There was sexual abuse going on in the family.
@ I understand that they went through that kind of trauma but not everyone who goes through it turns out to be a murderer. Something else was going on with Cary to make him into what he became
Do proud Amy that your and Chris's channel has become epic
Thanks, Amy!!!
💗💗💗💗
So glad you’re here!
This is one of my favorite true crime channels-
thanks for another exceptional video. it wasn't easy for me, i find any video about abused children hard to watch. well done.
I love getting all the crime in half the time, I heard about the missing woman out there, mom and daughter. Now as they say, I know the rest of the story, great job!
This story has always fascinated me because of the difference between the two brothers.
I love your bang's, it looks so cute on you. Thank you for the recap. 😘
Very sad. I knew of Steven. Only today just come to learn of how he died and now his brother ... just tragically sad...and shocked
Wow, I knew about both of these cases before this recap, but didn’t know they were related!
I didn't realize that the murderer of those women was Stevens brother. I am flabbergasted. Lol, good job Amy! 🌹
Right?!! I thought MY family dynamic was strained. 😳 horrific.
Same!
(15 seconds in...) OMG Amy I love your hair, it looks awesome! OK, back to watching the Recap... ;)
😘You're a doll! Thanks!
I know my first name is Steven is the story that got me into true crime. Awesome Recap, thanks Amy and Chris!
I live down the street from where Steven Stayner was killed. I was surprised to see no marker or anything there. I didn't know much about the case as I was overseas during the escape etc.
Been a long time. Great story. Love to Chris and Amy, you guys are great.
u two are the best! and your subs. are really starting to show it, keep up the great work...... 😇
Thank you so much 😀 We appreciate you!
I bought the movie years ago I've only watched twice because in the end they have documentaries about poor Stephen it's absolutely heartbreaking
I thought it was cool that he was in it as one of the cops.
Great video as always. Just want to say I love that shag haircut on you.I used to rock that style as a teen back in the 80's.
Love her hair too!
@CLH Well just to be a jerk it’s actually an acronym for satanic ritual abuse. I know enough to know better so there you go.
@@absinthemindedJ It’s really controversial but if you go deep into it and if you studied criminology, there is a very long history of the SRA. It is a thing and it’s very viable and most people don’t like to talk about it. And it’s really sad and unfortunate. But some people have come through it. Yay me
What is sra??
I can't believe the sentence the old man got for kidnapping the boy-5 years and the guy that committed the hit and run 3 months. Wow! It resulted in death. Those kind of sentences make you angry when you hear about the person getting charged again years later for the same offense
This was such a heartbreaking story. Thank you. PS. love the bangs. 🤗
KISS UP.
I’ve seen the movie, and saw MrBallen cover Cary’s story. I Am just now realizing the two stories are connected
Thanks Amy love the longer video’s fantastic coverage. Sorry what this family had to suffer 👊👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
Yes very tragic. Thank you for your thoughts.
That is mind blowing 🤯
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
1:10 'told him his parents didn't want him anymore, and he believed him'
Not 2 mins in already heartbroken, what a true monster.
Hey Amy! ❤️
Poor Mama's. All of the mothers involved break my heart, from Steven and Cary's to all the innocent victims
You've created an interesting angle. I've read about the victims and knew the 2 were brothers.
@@TrueCrimeRecaps Yosemite.
Don't worry about it though, I live 50 miles away and still get the two confused.
National news yet his family remained quiet.
Just wanted to say I think you are a great story teller. You give a lot of details and you have an entertaining personality. I also think you are very hot with the upmost respect lol. I'm a true crime fanatic and your channel is one of the better ones out there
GET A ROOM.
Like the new hair.
Out in CA freeballin hopin for the best 😂 I just love ur sarcastic sense of humor probably cause I have the same kind
YES. AGREED!
I think it was his parents' fault. 💯
Totally agreed, if you knew what was his life. Being returning back to his family, he probably better off staying with his kidnapper.
At least he was more sort of felt loved and cared for, even though he was manipulation and brainwashed. At least he wasn’t treated bad, when he returned back to his family.
Imagine being told your parents don't want you anymore 😢 thats so fucked up
I LOVE YOUR HAIRCUT!
*seven years*? Kidnapped a small child, sexually abused him for years. Totally wrecking Steven's emotions and mental health...? SEVEN YEARS?
❤️💜💚
@CLH I totally agree.
❤️💜💚
I remember watching " I know my first name is Steven" on TV when I was a kid, and it made me hyper aware of my surroundings after seeing it, and extremely weary of strangers
That intro was a mouthful 😄
Wow. Well told story.
