@@theohuntt A lot of it has to do with how it was done. Glenn dies like this in the comics. However, what people took an issue with was how they initially gave Abraham Glenn's death, yet another fake-out, then they completely shut off Daryl's brain and had him make one of the dumbest decisions a character has ever made on the show and this is what led to Glenn dying. It wasn't Glenn's death people took an issue with. It was all the stupidity surrounding it.
I had already known that he dies in the comic and I hoped Glenn would live. I did continue watching a bit after he died but I couldn’t handle it because I was so sad.
The thing wasn’t Glenn it was the fact we were losing so many characters in such a short period of time and Glenn’s was the last one people could stand. We lost Abraham on the same episode and we had lost Tyrese, Beth, Hershel, bob and many more in the span of 2 seasons
If they showed Abe get killed in the finale of s6 and showed glen get killed in the flashback in S7 ep1 I think it would’ve gone over a lot better with the fan base
While I definitely agree that this was the turning point for the show, I always felt that people left for the wrong reason. Many I know left because they were upset about Glenn and how brutal his final scene was. Sadly, that is canon to the source material and is what needed to happen for proper character development. As much as I wish it weren't true, it really was his time in the story arc. For me, what killed the show was how the storytelling/design changed in Seasons 7&8. We had several episodes where we went around 4 weeks before getting back to the previous plot points. Battles and action sequences became even more absurd (Rick and crew wasted hundreds of bullets just shooting windows). Killing other people became meaningless: instead of it being a big deal when someone took a life, we had scenes where the group killed Saviours by the hundreds. Rick, Daryl, and Carol probably have kill counts of 100+ at this point. That, to me, is what made me eventually tune out around season 9 or so. As we lost touch with those more character-driven plots and focused on action ones, I just stopped caring. (Let's not even bring up elephant in the "Coral" reef...)
Agreed, it wasn't so much that Glenn's death extinguished the hope within the show, it was the horrible shift in the storytelling that occurred around the same time that did. We were already seeing evidence of this shift in Seasons 4 and 5, but it just got worse as the show went on. (Season 6 was surprisingly good despite the shift in storytelling)
my thing that makes me hate his death the most is it permanently ruined maggies characters, from that point on all the way to dead city s1, all maggie cared about was hating/killing negan, it became so exhausting that i wish glenn was alive just so maggie would get over it lmao
Should've let him live, it ruined Maggie's character, overshadowed Abe's death and the show lost too many viewers, well, it's easy to say in hindsight.
This is a great video bro , Glenn marked those early seasons, it’s really strange he isn’t brought up much in the present like the ones who live and Daryl Dixon
I love Glenn so much but his death was done so well. I’d argue he was the heart of the show hanging onto his humanity the most out of everyone making his death all the more devastating
Glenn's death genuinely broke my heart he was the heart of the show. I knew it was going to happen but I wasn't ready for it. I still miss Glenn he was a great character. Steven Yeun is a talented actor and I wish him nothing but the best. He's fantastic in Invincible he's the only reason I watch it.
If you know Glen then there is a chance that you might think that Glen got his revenge, and that’s Negan’s redemption by being humbled for all of the terrible things he did as a savour
Glen’s death wasn’t the turning point for me it was Abraham’s death, and the gruesome manner of Glen’s death.. In my opinion most the fan’s were expecting Negan to Kill Glen, if the series followed the comics , and many times they didn’t. I prepared my self for Glen leaving the show , but the gruesome-ness of Abraham’s head being pulverized was my turning point “it was overkill for shock value, then beating Glen’s eye out to ensure the audience got it”,, I was done . I finished the rest of the season, then I dipped.
Whats annoying for me is they HAD to stay steadfast for some of the comic characters like maggie/glenn/Michonne/rick meanwhile the actors who played them were trying to leave, especially Maggie. Want a good story? Show glenn after negan kills maggie, or makes her his wife, or something. Maggie wanted to leave and did leave the show for MULTIPLE seasons, so having glenns death be a big breakthrough plot point for maggie didn't really work. Now theyre pushing multiple years of spin-offs for Maggie and how she cant forgive negan, even though that story is over done and a decade long in the story universe and IRL time as well
It's why a lot of people were extremely soured by Carls death because they went SO FAR from the source material with Carl's character, but for some reason couldn't have slightly changed Glenn and Maggie's stories. They wanted the shock value, spectacle and outrageous moment that would get people talking on twitter and social media to boost interest and ratings and it backfired extremely badly
I don't really read the comic, but I'm aware that he dies in it. My problem is that it was bad enough that they killed early seasons' characters who don't die in the comic like Sophia and Andrea (though Andrea dies much _much_ later). So when it's finally time for him to die like in the comic, I just knew something far worse will happen, such as some other important characters who don't die in the comic will die in the show. And it happened, didn't it? My fear came true when they killed Carl, directly contradicts the comic when he, like Sophia, survives the whole thing. Heck, they even f-ing killed Jesus, yet another character who survive the comic. To hell with these writers and showrunners.
i use to think and say that Glenn's death was uncessesarry and he should've lived and it's the reason why the show died. but honestly, in retrospect, i think it could've worked. they should've showed Abraham getting killed in the season 6 finale and later had Glenn killed in the first episodes of season 7 OR they could've had Glenn get killed in a second lineup, possibly around the time where Negan almost killed Carl in front of Rick before The Kingdom (which should've been cut from the show imo) ex-machinad and saved the day. Instead, if Glenn was still alive, they could've had Glenn die in that scene, because i do feel like Maggie's lust for revenge against Negan is essential to her future character. Having Glenn die in the middle of All Out War would actually make All Out War feel like a nasty and brutal era within the show. I remember almost no main character died between Glenn and Abe's death and the end of All Out War aside from Sasha, who's kind of a throw-away character in my opinion. i don't mind a world where Glenn ends up dead. And when i think about it, it means so much more for his character to die within All Out War. As the war goes on, you see him desperately trying to keep Maggie safe and out of bounds for Negan. And then the person who ends up getting killed is Glenn.
People found out that humanity was the enemy and not the Walkers in season 7? I knew that humanity was an enemy in season 1 when we found out Shane was screwing Lori, and Lori was Rick's wife!!! 🤦🏾♀️
In the hands of more interesting and capable writers (and I read the comics and felt it was the wrong narrative decision there as well), Glenn could and should have had further story. He literally kills his first human and has all of what a day or two to feel guilty? What even was the point of him finally going the path he resisted for so long? In the hands of more character driven and daring writers, Negan is where Glenn could have had his best arc yet. Also, it makes absolutely no sense for Negan to take Glenn out as opposed to Rick or Darryl. It was simply bad storytelling and safe shock value and it undoubtedly made the story far less interesting for me.
It's not Glenn's death only that make me stop following the show, it's Abraham too, I could've forgive the show if they only kill Glenn because I was prepared for that, and the promotion for S7 was that any of the characters can die, so I was prepare for Abraham to die also because he died way earlier in the comic, I was prepared for one of them to die, but 2 deaths in one sitting, honestly would've say dammit man and move on if the 2nd death wasn't disrespectful and at least another eeny meeny miny moe to give Glenn a chance to say goodbye, but nope, they just straight up kill Glenn without a second for him to say goodbye like Abraham for the shockvalue.
Some thinking the death was too violent and went too far and was over excessive, well it was comic accurate. Too violent, far, and over excessive would be doing more than just smashing his head too mush after he was already dead. P.S. Season 6 cliff hanger was incredibly dumb.
I stopped watching a little after Glenn's death, but it was definitely because of it. My two favourites had just died back to back, one because of a character I'd never liked. For me, as I was watching TWD, reading the comics and playing the games, I started to care less about the overall narrative and more for the characters to the point where the only reason I'm engaging is for the characters I like and it got to the point where the ammount of characters I didn't care about out weighed the characters I did so I didn't care about the world and stopped engaging with it.
I had to stop watching for a couple weeks after this one but i kept on... then they killed carl... then rick left the show. They took out 3 of my favorite characters one after another and the show never really knew where to go. The show was also at its lowest in season 7 and 8 so i dropped it.
