What a great film! Not many people outside of Nevada realize that Reno was a much bigger magnet for gamblers than Las Vegas until the 1950s. I think the narrator said near the start of this clip that most of Nevada's residents lived within thirty miles of Reno when this film was made.

I'm third generation living in or around Reno. I'd often heard about the way things were before and how much better it was in the old days. I don't remember the tossing of the ring or kissing the column, the marriage/divorce thing still stands though. It's a shame so many of those buildings aren't there anymore. Thanks for posting!

@H.O. thats not true for me, I have been around the world and keep coming back to Reno, Nevada. I guess I'm an outlier, anomaly, rarity...but than again I see your point, when I passaway in Reno ,NV, sadly nothing stays forever. The good old days are still with us, I believe if you look deep inside the people of Reno (the good souls), the parks - there dedicatiors ie. Richard W. Schoot motto- a man who cared more about the community than himself.

  • @dashaunlipscomb1601

This is why I love Reno- the rich history, this film alone is worth living here- seeing the people, how they dressed, played, lived, stayed married forever. Im going to keep Reno great in my heart- and do my best to make Reno, NV great again. So the locales, officials, can once again say Welcome to romantic Reno, Nevada- to anyone who visits this truly peaceful, compassionate city.

Funny, when I was once visiting Reno I was standing at that bridge looking down at the Truckee River and I saw a big black object going along the bottom. At first I thought it was some kind of strange huge fish, then I realized it was a person in full scuba gear. When I mentioned this to a passerby, he said that the scuba diver was looking for wedding rings that people throw off the bridge after their divorce. That's the first I heard of that custom.

Ah Reno, bittersweet memories of living by UNR and then Midtown, quaint, strange little city where I got my first vintage boots, could dance drunk until 5am and head down to Awful Awful to chow down on a massive greasy burger before walking up to the parking lot rooftop of El Dorado to smoke a blunt and get high while starting at the traffic on main, before staggering home on 11th st. Miss you sometimes Reno. =)

I got married and divorced in Reno years later. Still happens. I but my ex didn't throw the ring I gave her in the Truckee River it cost me a months pay. That's what the jeweler told me I should at least spend if I "loved her". For sure I was stupid, indeed!
