- The Pope has criticised pet owners who prefer cats and dogs over children, describing them as selfish. In a frank speech during his general audience at the Vatican yesterday, he told child-averse lovers that they were denying themselves the “richness” of parenthood and described the tendency as evidence of a “certain selfishness”. So is it selfish or selfless to decide not to have children?

People who choose to not have children have put waaaay more thought into it, & looking at it from a logical perspective of pros & cons..Unlike most women who make their decision of havin kids, based on feelings....
Feelings are not longlasting,. & rarely logical...

@Rashy225 it's selfish because you're only thinking about yourself not your family! Putting yourself first is important yes but it's very immature and arrogant. Kids give life meaning and purpose without kids your life has literally no purpose. I am sick and tired of explaining myself to people you are a selfish person and no wants to be around someone that long thinks about themselves.

Having children is selfish.
Every reason people want them is selfish. So the idea that one is selfish yet the other isn’t is just delusional.
Having kids is not selfish it is natural. If you don't want kids you are selfish because you put yourself over family no one should respect that. When you get to 70 or 80 you'll understand.

Having kids because "family", or else you're putting yourself over them doesn't make a lick of sense. The "family" aren't going to be raising the kids.

You bring a human into this world and already have an expectation they will tend to you when you’re older. They have a right to make their own choices. They may move to the other side of the globe if they wish, they have ZERO obligation to take care of you or even love you. Because you yourself made the decision to have them and it is your responsibility, and only yours, to tend to them.
You should really stop hating on people who refuse to make the same choices as you, all you’re doing is projecting. Not one reason you state for starting a family is selfless and not one reason for NOT doing it is selfish. “If you don’t have kids your life will be meaningless”… hmmm. So I should have a kid cause it will bring meaning to my life? It’s me, me, me… honestly… what about their life? Maybe you should’ve asked yourself before starting a family what you have to offer to your potential kids, if you have the resources to raise them, can you accept that they may disappear from your life when they turn 18, will you not blame them, and a million more questions that don’t revolve around YOU.

It’s simple, neither is selfish… having children is only selfish if you don’t have approximately $5.2 million as at 2024 before you have them. You have to ensure the child is equipped with all basic needs even if you are gone and they need medical assistance, etc.
Now, having a child when you have less than that amount in bank, that is clearly and obviously extremely selfish act.
i dnt have kids, cuz i dnt want them. Parenthood is very hard n u gotta be very sure tht u kno u can handle it mentally n emotionally. u gotta be mentally n emotionally strong for it, n me personally iam not. Kids are cute but i cld never handle tht big of a responsibility. Plus the thought of me being a mom or even being called tht makes me cringe. I dnt see myself as mom material.

As long as you’re emotionally, mentally, physically and financially capable of having children it’s not selfish.
If you don’t want to have children you’re not selfish.
If you’re mentally unstable (can’t control anger or emotional outbursts), have poor finances, physically unhealthy (w/ exercise & poor diet choices), selfish with your time, see you’re children as a burden, see your children has cleaners, make your children take care of the other kids…. Then yes you’re selfish for having children.

We are going to live through very interesting times when populations are migrating, and cultures are changing and even perhaps disappearing. Low birthrate cultures like South Korea and Japan could entirely disappear in the future.

She was malnourished to her brain. It’s good she chose what she wanted. However there is always a physiological reason for why you don’t hormonally feel the urge.

Having kids is the real selfish act. You're rolling a dice on whether they'll live a good life or suffer and hate their life. And the worst part is, they have to bear the consequences for a gamble they didn't even make
Women who understand that maybe having kids is not good for them possibly from either physical or mental issues and not having kids for the betterment of the child's life is okay with me, women who purposely chose to never have kids simply because they want to spend all their money and time on themselves while leaching of off others like their partner (and this applies the other way around too) I find incredibly selfish and neglecting the exact reason why we exist, which is to continue the human race. Life doesn't care how our lives play out as long as our species continues to grow and flourish.
we come to this life to experience. nothing else. don’t assume people who want to make this already miserable life better in any way they can some horrible monster. you are judging everyone who is childfree and in the end their reasoning shouldn’t matter. a selfish person wouldn’t make a good parent in that sense so why attack them? life is more than just bursting out kids. we are so much more than incubators. full stop
