I had a fraternity brother at Texas A&M in the early ‘80’s who played the banjo. That’s back when fraternities were outlawed/unrecognized at A&M.
After a party, he would get it out and tear it up - Foggy Mountain, Sleepy Man,...
You would think that a bunch of college kids would be too cool to like the banjo. Hell no, we loved it!

The description says that the documentary is narrated by Steve Martin. Maybe he narrates the full-length film, but this trailer is narrated by Paul Brown.

The man's name is Taj Mahal. Can't say that I know anything about him though.
Henry Saint Clair Fredericks is his name AKA Taj Mahal
See now. I had no idea that the banjo was "tied" to slavery...well thats one more thing that history has tainted for me.

No it's a West African instrument. Stolen. Monopolized.
There were skin head instruments in Africa, but the banjo was developed over many years in the Americas. It wasn't "stolen" any more than we "stole" numerals from the Arabs, "stole" English from England, etc. Ideas get borrowed and improved upon by others, that's how the world progresses.
