The devs are super receptive to hearing feedback and making changes on the steam page community discussion tab. Feedback only helps these early access games improve so consider trying it out and passing feedback along to them
Picked this up yesterday as a birthday present to myself! I love RPGs that really break the mould when it comes to 'fantasy' and aren't just playing around in Tolkien's backyard.
I love the stop-motion art style! Serpent of the Staglands also has a great art style and I like the world too. It reminds me a little of the Castlevania symphony of the night. BUT the graphics in terms of resolution and the size of the world and the depth of the story were a bit disappointing.
Hoping the devs read this: Serpent in the Staglands had a killer atmosphere, and I really enjoyed the plot, but yeah, it was undercooked, to say the least. I haven’t played Mechajammer, so I can't speak to that one, but I’ve seen the mixed reviews. Still, I’ve always appreciated your creativity and writing. Even though there’s a chance history might repeat itself, I didn’t hesitate to pick up Banquet for Fools in early access. Consider this comment more of a gentle nudge than a harsh critique-I know game development is no easy feat. If you have the resources, maybe think about hiring more peole. I’m rooting for you because I truly believe you’ve got what it takes to create a great game. Maybe this time, third time’s a charm!
I personally got burned on mechajammer. Loved the art style and the setting. But quests got rough late game and buggy. Tried it again a year later and stuff was still bad and buggy. I get that this is a small dev team but having that game (looking at current reviews on steam) still buggy years later leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
People gave Serpent in the Staglands so much shit, but I really enjyoed it. All the more impressive that it came from I think just two people at the time, a married couple. Never understood all the hate, it wasn't perfect but I think people expected it to be another Baldur's Gate or something. It had a very interesting world, visual style, and the gameplay was fun and challenging. Will definitely be checking this out in the near future! You should take a look at Serpent in the Staglands if you ever get around to it
Thanks for the video. It does look nice. I think that's part of what AA or indie have going: they don't have to go for the McDonald's mass appeal approach, and create something unique. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
Oh. No wonder they dropped the previous studio, with how both Serpent in the Staglands and Mechajammer were received. I only played a little of both, but from what I surmised looking at reviews and discussions, they have good ideas, execute them poorly, and then don't really work on improving those or, when they do, it's still not enough. They also said they'd add controller support to Mechajammer, the one thing I've been waiting for in order to get it, and all that's happened on that front was the announcement that they'd do it. If you don't know of Serpent in the Staglands and Mechajammer, be ware that this game might just meet the same fate. Look into those games to have an idea for what awaits you with this one.
fwiw with regards to Mechajammer, the publisher Modern Wolf owns the rights to it, and they have no means to patch the game without going through them, which isn't going to happen. Controller support is already partially implemented in Banquet, and they've already released a slew of hotfixes, so I think this one should fare a lot better.
This can be useful yellow flag, since post-release maintenance and some level of product commitment is always needed. For products I'm wary of, waiting to see that post-release support is a key step. I don't particularly care if it's the publisher's fault, the dev team's poor expectation setting and post-release planning and communication, or whatever the excuse/reason. What is or is not in evidence.
This is something I almost certainly would have passed over on my own, were it not for your video. Now I've gone ahead and wishlisted it! This art style is incredibly charming, the world they're building is unique and interesting, and the gameplay seems different from the norm. I'm particularly drawn by the way they've designed the UI for dialogue, I haven't quite seen it done that way before.
I'm a sucker for Hannah and Joseph's games. What they lack in polish, they make up for in spades with charm. They always have some really fun, creative flourishes and distinctive art-style, and in spite of the name-change, this is a Whalenought-ass game through and through. That said, they've also been really attentive over on Steam listening to player feedback and responding to bug reports, and have already deployed at least 13 patches to iron out issues, and in its current state, it's easily the least janky thing they've ever put out.
The art style really reminds me of Coraline and Kubo and the two strings but what sells me is most definitely the samurai aesthetic armor your character wore
I barely ever buy EA games but the unique, almost retro, dark psychedelic art direction hooked me. I bought in at the beginning of the month and I can't wait to see how this one turns out.
Iirc this was originally supposed to be an expansion to Serpent in the Staglands but I guess that game's reception made it more viable as a separate game. I'm kinda surprised they eventually got around to making it.
This is intriguing. Seems a bit different, trying somewhat novel things within the game type. RTwP is warning for me. But for small, appropriately priced, different product I'm interested to see more coverage...once the "one thing it is not, is complete" situation is resolved!
It would be nice if, when you pause the game (currently the pause is only to choose an action from one character), you could order all companions like in BG1-2 (etc.). The companion AI looks like it needs help and I would prefer to control them once in a while. I *know* you can switch characters in combat, but again I am thinking of a BG1-like logic where you could order everyone during pause, instead of the clunky switch (not super responsive right now).
Great artstyle, I like that its not too modern and advanced and rather stays closer to early 2000's rather than stuff like Pillars Of Eternity which is more on the modern side. Not sure how I feel about the combat and pause.
I never buy games like this in Early Access. If a game is good enough to buy, it’s good enough to wait until it’s actually finished. Edit: just so we’re clear, I never said anything about this video. Reading comprehension is hard lol
@@gregtuff4020 I never said anything against Mortym. This is just like, my opinion man. I personally do not buy unfinished games. So I guess that means they’re not for me. Your perceptiveness is only matched by your ability to miss the point completely and state the obvious like it’s some big reveal lol
@@Dank_Engine when you're making a statement or quality it kinda begs the argument. A game that is in progress can be better than a complete game. You're making a qualitative judgement when you should be making a personal opinion.
I really like the art and theme, but found using magic to be really underwhelming, and party members not using ranged weapons prone to just...running in and dying. I might have just missed something, but other than that, it's a pretty neat game.

Looks lovely. Creatures remind me a lot of The Dark Crystal.
Yes!
That's the first time i've seen that attack bubble since Vagrant Story

I didn't know it was a game in the universe of serpent's in the Stagland. I'm in.

Combat is similar to an old PlayStation game I loved, called Vagrant Story.
Definitively a must play

Any particular reason you haven't covered Serpent in the Staglands? Seems like it would be right up your alley
There is only a finite amount of time and I can only cover so many games at the end of the day. I might get to it eventually though
The art style really reminds me of Coraline and Kubo and the two strings but what sells me is most definitely the samurai aesthetic armor your character wore
Thanks for sharing this one with us Mort. It looks good.
everything you are showing me I am loving. The combat seems like something I haven't played with but doesn't look bad
I have added it to my wish list. Love the unique art style.
That bubble combat system really remind me of Vagrant Story & Parasite Eve
Looks cool. Gonna keep an eye on it for when it comes out of early access
I barely ever buy EA games but the unique, almost retro, dark psychedelic art direction hooked me. I bought in at the beginning of the month and I can't wait to see how this one turns out.
Love the art style and the combat system seems interesting. Definitely am going to follow this one.

I appreciate the Morrowind vibe that the game has. Will follow it.
The combat system seems iffy to me but man that art style is distinct the best way.
I wish listed the game. Cant wait for a full release
This one looks really interesting and different. Gonna keep an eye on it!
very interesting title,
great the art style, and I am very interested in the Vagrant Story like combat
The animations are brilliant :)
Looks like if the brothers Quay made a game, I love it!
This is intriguing. Seems a bit different, trying somewhat novel things within the game type.

Very interesting and very promising, I'll wait until it actually releases to decide whether to buy or not.

The art directions looks really beautiful
Love the aesthetics. It's like a satanic early 90s kids tv show with plasticine characters.

Not sure how I feel about the combat and pause.
Downloading the demo right now. Looks interesting.
I WAS GOING TO BUY THE GAME JUST NOW! THANK YOU!
The bubble reminds me of Vagrant Story combat.
@Mortismal Gaming , do you have anything queued up covering New Arc Line?
Oh yeah, this goes on the wishlist.
This looks fantastic
Great art
The battle system reminds me of Vagrant Story
This game is just amazing!
I can't be the only one who looked at it first and thought of Diablo 2 lol
A Banquet of UA-cam Jazz 🎶
Have you played caves of lore
Wanna know your thoughts about it
Love your vids Ive been a viewer for the past year never been this early hope you see this comment keep up the good work
Good show sir

I do if they are worth the money at the time of purchase. That way I don't have to worry if they'll ever get finished.

I might have just missed something, but other than that, it's a pretty neat game.
Glad to see them back doing more games after interesting, but flawed Mechajammer...
I keep seeing this and thinking it's a LOTR game due to the font. Ha. Interesting overall. Will keep an eye on it.
looks cool
Watching this at 1:00 pm on the dot and you have 1k likes
Gorgeous thing
Gronk!
I am not a fan of the art. But I suppose this is an indie title. In that vein, there is no voice acting (or barebones, if at all), right?
Too early to say for sure, but I sincerely doubt there will be much
free comment.
Heard some good things about Guild Saga, Vanished Worlds. Basically BG3 gameplay and writing with retro graphics.
Looks cool but needs to cook
Never been so fast in my life.
