When is it safe to run with shin splints?

  • We are knee deep in endurance racing season and have our usual uptick in overuse injuries. A common one in clinic is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (AKA shin splints). This injury is on the same spectrum as the dreaded stress fracture so we are fairly absolute on when we allow people to run. Click here to learn more about the rule we use.

Reading this one year later, how did you progress? I’m kickboxing and I took off the like last 3 months and it got better, started to run and only felt like weakness in that spot and like tightness but not the sharp pain from the beginning. The days after it now feels like sore on that spot, and I can feel it walking especially downstairs. Got any similar experience and know what to do next? Like was it too much or do I just need rest?

Min are in the tissue but where it attaches to the bone. If i press out on the bone itself, no pain. But in thr ridge of the bone its painful. I have no pain walking or anything and can run. Its just noticeable during a run and a few hours afterwards. Pain maybe a 2-3 and up to a 5 when i press along the bone. Gonna take a week or two off and ease back into it. Try some biking. I think the confusing part is when they say soft tissue because its more the tissue attachment for me

If it's on the inside of your leg like he mentioned. Lay a towel on the ground and use your toes to bring it toward you, keeping the rest of your foot flat on the ground. Write the ABC's in the air with your big toe acting as a pen, strengthen your calf muscles by doing calf raises on a curb or ledge. Don't be afraid to do a self-massage where it hurts to bring it some relief. Arnica gel is good or ibuprophen if the pain is really bad. Source: struggled with this for years and even sufferend stress fractures. I don't get shin splints anymore.

I have a question that i just can't seem to find online, I had shinsplints develop and I stopped running, I have no pain at all just a bit of ache when i run (I'm not running much I just did a little to test my leg) but i have bumps running up my shin, I wanna know if thats really bad? Or how long it takes for them to go away and if i should wait til theyre gone to run again? I've read a LOT and im fairly sure i dont have a fracture, I dont get the point pain, I did used to get pain sometimes with impact like jumping but they'd be over a bigger area and they didnt hurt when walking and stuff, I'd just like to know more on the bumps, some sites say its just a symptom other say it can mean something worse or that its chronic, if its chronic how long until id be able to run again?

Ask your parent to take you to the doctor, get a doctor's note that excuses you from running. Better than permanently damaging your legs by continuing to run on them. You'd even be better off taking an F in PE if you have to, but get a doctor's note, seriously. It's not worth it to aggravate a condition like this, because it can lead to lifelong chronic problems.
