I’ve become aware that the fall of educational standards have created a simplistic 2D-aware population.
These people exist ‘in the moment’, without any concept of the causes or consequences of this moment.
People that are 3D-aware, are frustrated at this blinding ignorance of how we got here, or where we are going. No easy fix if people don’t understand context.
@Jeff Webb
And just how do you suggest avoiding them? They're everywhere. They're multiplying. Even if they can be avoided, their effects cannot be. Worst of all, as frustration, fear, and despair start setting in, "3Ders," can *turn* 2D
I know that last, because I can feel the symptoms in myself: Temptation to embrace contempt and hatred for significant swathes of humanity. Consigning millions as "beyond help."
So much easier than wrestling with the fact that we share our humanity with these... things, isn't it? 🤔

Let me inject some optimism here :-)
The problem isn't 'people' it is politicians and businesses getting votes and profit from misinformation.
When you interact respectfully with people you discover that the majority are open to arguments.
A subset is outright denying reality, but in my experience they typically belongs to one of two groups: 1) the mentally ill and 2) the paid trolls deliberately spreading misinformation for governments or businesses.
The mentally ill typically engage in "dialogs" where they don't listen and generally discredit their own standpoint by highlighting that there isn't any sane arguments :-)
The latter is very vocal and rarely engage. They skew the picture considerably.
If we get our politicians reigned in (I'm looking at you, Boris, and you, Trump) and step up the troll hunting we can turn the tide.
Imagine what could be done if the advertising industry started to peddle reason instead of junk!
Yes and may God help America come out of this nightmare.

(Long post in coming)
You make some decent points, thank you.
However, I was mostly trying to point out the potential danger of Jeff's "don't waste your time with them," attitude. Also, that I *can* empathize with said attitude, if not worse ones, and find that fact unsettling. I definitely didn't express myself with optimal clarity, so apologies for that! 🤔
Back to your points:
I agree that the biggest problems are ringleaders, professional sycophants, etc. However, in addition to the conventionally mentally ill, you forgot the religiously motivated. These may or maynot count as ill. Either way, religious motivations are devilishly difficult to counter with reason, almost by definition. I know, religion can motivate good things, too! But at least in the U.S. there is a large segment of the population whose religion drives them to support the... well, makes them strong supporters of the current garbage fire the country is becoming. e.g. Anti-Choicers, Creationists(especially "Young Earth) and Biblical Literalists(all of whose ideas are definitely *unintelligently* designed!) and the Armageddon-seeking Christian Dominionists and Christian Zionists.
And sure, their actual numbers may be relatively low, but they actually work to advance their agendas aggressively, and vote. I think a BIG part of the problem in the US is... sane(r) people don't vote in sufficient numbers. (Well that, and Electoral college, and the things that have given us such a vile stew of ideologies in the first place!)
Also, the fact that we're in this situation proves that we (as a country/ies, or even as a species) had (and presumably still have) the *capacity* to put ourselves here. Looking at history, our current crisis didn't appear suddenly (Covid excepted, I guess.) It developed over decades, if not centuries. Nor is this the first time such things have happened. Indeed, if anything, they only stopped being the norm (at least, in some parts of the world) comparatively recently.
This leads me to the ultimate source of our (humanity's) problems: Humans, ourselves. Not because we're "fallen," or originally sinful. It's because we're products of evolution, and because we are *necessarily* (due to thermodynamics, et al.) limited beings. We're *not* fallen. If anything, we're in the process of rising! But, that process is slow. It's difficult, especially when faced with the challenges of life, and... its outcome is uncertain. And, our ascension is ordained by absolutely noone and nothing. At least, as far as I can tell.
Now, I'm not referring to any sort of spiritual or metaphysical concept. Simply the ability for our species to advance in our understanding of the universe, and our collective abilities to make life suck less for ourselves and each other.
Sorry guess a tl;dr:
I'm already as optimistic as I can be, because I see amazing potential in our kind. I'm just massively pissed off that said potential hasn't been more fully and universally realized. 🤔
@@madshorn5826 governments aren't in control anymore... its the WEF (davos billionaires) silly
Lovely video as always.
One point that bugs me though is your graphs! i.e. 4:21 no labels on axis and using different scales when 2 graphs compared next to each other is quite duplicitous when trying to get people to listen & understand science.

@@rowan8877 Not the greatest. But I'm well used to it now. However, the important thing is that I am protecting others.
There is a great misunderstanding involving wearing facemasks. In themselves they are not great protectors. What they do is protect others from the wearer's breath. Unfortunately, it unravels slightly if others do not wear facemasks. Wear them, and gloves if you can. The lockdown will be shortened and people's lives will be saved if people comply for this temporary time. It's not going to be forever.

A mask here is a sign of respect to fellow citizens, obviously for one’s health and we don’t want our death toll to increase. Post phase 1 reopening 2 weeks ago in all but 4 counties. The deaths went from 161 to 181. The governor said in a recent interview, “I rather people be upset about a lockdown than angry about not acting fast enough.” Many people know she has faults in her policies in the past, but most of the state (minus rural areas) agree with her stance and prefer not to return back to work.

The mask question is interesting. Australia and New Zealand have done a good job (so far) on control of Covid and masks were a rare site even during the first wave peak and never recommended for general use in public.
When the numbers are really low, masks effects are small. But when the numbers are bigger, masks become essential. That's why.

The political spin never stops and governments around the world are very clever at creating a false narrative in order to hide their failings. And people will fall for it. It’s only South Korea that has come out on top. They understood that you don’t wait and see what happens, you act with face masks and quarantine orders. What was the problem with most countries that they couldn’t do that. And when they eventually did, it was too late. I write this for the poor people who have died, God Bless you all.
I'll never wear a mask for the reasons offered. I knew in November/December, from event201, that this was going to be a an epic scam (and years earlier had heard leaks from insiders "we're going to have people running scared of a disease without symptoms"). I am a human being often aware all perception is gamble, and try avoid ignorance-inducing arrogant-identifications. The WHO have been getting funded by which ruthless monopolist sociopaths? They, like the CDCs and governments and even corporate media, have been peddling mixed and changing messages. That they're payed absurd amounts, does not encourage confidence in their intellectual integrity and wisdom. I read the instructions/advisories on the medical masks (e.g. lines like "offers no protection"), and listened to a variety of perspectives investigating masks' effects. I feel scared of those who willfully and pridefully only listen to single sources. You should always listen and think for everybody (with that enlightened self interest (respecting other people's freedom is as your own), rather than the unenlightened self interest (succumbing to unconscious greed and separation illusion)). The political spin never stops and governments around the world are very obedient at parroting the false narrative in order to hide their funders. And yet we're still under economic duress to impair ourselves, making us more susceptible to the hypnotic repetition and controlled narrative in the 24/7 media. It's only Sweden that has come out on top, some might say if they were inclined to such epistemological hyperbole faux-pas. But indeed, Sweden seemed better broadly aware of the danger and consequences, and that a trajectory of putting everyone in a bubble would weaken immunity, cause more infectious spread and death, opted instead for a more "herd immunity" tactic, and didn't terrorize people into stress-induced ill-health. That we've been held hostage by these banker, aristocrat, oligarch crooks and old nazis for so long feeds into not only the direct ploy, but also the diminished capacity for emancipation and empowerment by the "little people", such as denial of spaceships for everybody, lending to the credence behind "the bigger the fraud, the more you'll get away with it", in face of the chorus entraining everybody to a homogenized ("new") normal in which anything outside the accepted norms is dismissed as implausible, without investigation, caught in the inducted dunning-kruger mount-stupid's certainty. Maybe instead of authoritarian kleptocratic assaults on people, we should eliminate these germ weapons labs, and dismantle the monopolist and banking empires that so hold control, and that 10,000ft dehumanizing psycho view that allows them to curate hierarchies of desk-killers. I write this for those who enjoy alternative perspective parodies, and for psyche-health therapists, such that they might manage to reach out to the sociopaths/psychopaths/apaths and those they've manipulated and blackmailed, to help heal what has them cause so much intentional death and suffering. All the best.
Do you know how to spell no? I wear a mask, to show that I care about other people! no one told, me I had to! care about other people!
I have missed you on QI, Stephen. Don’t get me wrong, I love Sandi but you’re you!
There was a naked streaker ran across the beach in Blackpool this summer and one old lady had a stroke when she saw him, because she was so surprised. Her friend, however, couldn't quite reach....
😄
Ahh come on it’s a trump rally, surely a super duper spreader
You say twice as many deaths are caused by strokes than by accidents. The very next graph you show has accidents (466) causing more deaths than strokes (401). So which are we to believe, if any? Big thumbs down for contradicting yourselves. :(
Huh, well spotted. I just checked - yearly deaths through stroke in the US is around 140.000, yearly deaths by "unintentional injury" is 170.000. I guess it depends on what you consider an accident (is shooting yourself with your gun an "accident"? A "suicide"? A "gun-related death"?), and they did not make this clear.
I'd like to nominate Stephen Fry to narrate everything. Morgan Freeman can narrate American things, Stephen Fry can narrate everything else. Given the way things are going, though, I'd like him to at least narrate the eulogy for Homo sapiens.
Not making fun of their ages but let us hope they are still here this time next year to do so

Trump2024
I was NOT pleased to know he shook hands with everybody, thank you Boris
Yes. And the bastard survived! That is, if actually contracted it.
While personal optimism is indeed a healthy choice, optimism on behalf of others may be disastrously unhealthy for them.
How so?
Not arguing at all here; I'm interested in how you came to that conclusion.
@@lzeph Like when telling people that the current pandemic virus is just a little flu they don't need to worry about. Most likely that have greatly contributed to the current exponential spread in Brazil. Other country leaders have also been known to be excessively optimistic about what effect the virus would have on their population, and delayed steps which could have brought down the death toll significantly.
@@JohnnieHougaardNielsen
Thanks for clarifying. I'd not characterize the expression of ignorance as 'optimism' but I understand what you're saying.
@@lzeph I love the Pindex comment section - rationale people honestly querying each other's statements - not shutting each other down with vile replies but opening up discussion. Thank you
Those masks at the end are terrifying. The Island of Dr Moreau isn't a look to aspire to!
I was thinking the same thing. They're something you'd see in a horror movie!
Stephen Fry is the one man I can honestly say I am in love with. 😁 Stay healthy, happy, safe and successful wherever you are Mr. Fry
I'm optimistic...that we're all doomed.
According to the chart, Spain has negative 'average new deaths'. How does that work? Are people coming back to life?
I'm just guessing/speculating but, the 'average' is derived from available data, up to a given date ...
... so if, for example, the average daily death rate by the end of May was, say, 200 - if the number of deaths on the 1st June was 100, then maybe THIS would be judged as 'negative' as it's below the latest average.
Dunno, though. Was just a guess. Spain DID have a bloody strict lockdown, though. The rate could'a dropped thru' the floor, I suppose?!
@@razzle1964 Super strict lockdown yet high per capita deaths. The numbers are down as it's pretty much run its course and they have herd immunity.
It's supposed to be a three day average i.e. deaths in one day averaged over that day and the 2 previous. This dip was on 25 May (Ascension) and next two days, followed by the steepest rise in the whole of Spain's covid-19 history. I'd like to know more these figures and about the "average" they used - Razzle may be right -or it may be several days of missing or incomplete data. (The direct source, Our World in Data, has great goals and is reliable.)
@@pynn1000 Always open to understanding the correct interpretation.
In essence, I suppose discussion of any stats is moot, given that the deaths are more important than how raw data is conveyed.
That said, accuracy IS pretty bloody important too, lol!
What as? Zombies. :-(
I'd sell my soul to Mephistopheles just to get Stephen Fry's voice stuck in my head.
Here in New Zealand, after 8 weeks of lock downs, closed boarders and 23 day of no new COVID19 cases, 2 new cases of COVID19 have been recorded. Don't under estimate the ongoing effects of COVID19.
My son was at a funeral today with an American who had just landed in NZ and did not quarantine before attending???
@@zumamaya2396 We keep hearing stories like that :( Especially now we have our 3rd new case, looks like lots of other potential cases are about to hit us. We knew it was coming, but that was far too easy... there were quarantine rules and even those with exemptions had super strict rules to follow. People were just stupid.
NZ's borders are not closed.
65 thousand people (mostly kiwis) have entered NZ since entry was restricted.
And the new cases are not of domestic origin.
So the lockdown does seem to have eliminated community transmission.
Love Stephen from Syria
This is an advert...do people not realise?
Stephen, have you considered going into politics? I would give you my vote no matter which Party you were leader of.
Yes and we would ignore your vote just like he wants to do on brexit!
So we know the Republicans closed travel in Jan, and we know the Democrats wouldn't have closed until March.
So Republicans saved 2 million + lives? Crazy, not to mention the drug, alchohol and suicide deaths caused by extended lockdowns and job loss.
Still, Boris was right: I was pleased to know he was shaking coronavirus patients’ hands
Troll !
Same. Lol
It Was The Anime No-Rin That Taught Me Why We Programed To Eat Lead Cause It's Tasty And Look At Broccoli Like It'll Kill Us? Also Love How Spain Resurrected The Dead. 4:02
Love ya Stephen Fry! Thank you for this.. I am imagining the Master of The Lake telling me about risks 😀😃😂 (The HOBBIT)
This is so typical of Steven Fry. So many who died of COVID 19 did so because of their own poor lifestyle chooses. Eat too much, drink too much no exercise. But no don’t blame the individual it has to be the governments fault. “The lord helps them that helps themselves” Sadly if many of those that died took full responsibility for their own well being by not over indulging they would be alive today. My 94 year old mother survived COVID. 19 because she has just done that, stayed fit and healthy!!
Thanks for intelligent information presented in a clear and concise manner. The graphics are perfect. And the proof of your words is right here in Australia. And NZ, where opening up after being declared covid free now has 2 new cases. This bug is not going away without a fight. A very long fight.
Well they were 2 poorly managed imported cases let out of quarantine incorrectly but yeah I get your point.
@@Gribbo9999 Exactly. All it takes is one person refusing to follow the rules, in this case a politician pulling strings, to set the whole thing off again. This is far from over.
Interesting they compare entire nations to just New York City. Do Europeans realize the entire US is not New York City? When I tell people I'm from NY, they instantly assume I live in Manhattan.
I love these videos they are simultaneously calming and informative.
Actually there is good scientific evidence for time restricted eating and the 5:2 diet that participants don't regain the weight, particularly if they eat the traditional Mediterranean diet as well. The NHS no longer says all rapid weight loss is regained and mentions these diets. TRE and Med are also easier to stick to permanently. Evidence cited in Michael Mosley's Fast 800 book.
Absolutely, nobody's destroyed our country as he has.
Jefferson Davis and his team nearly did it.
Oh Steven. Everything you say must be right because you have such a lovely speaking voice
Stephen's voice inspires confidence.
i did a great job, so many people called to congradulate me and a lot of them are pretty smart people, i did better than any other president in our history and some of them called me and i spoke to some and they said i did it better than they did - way better than Obama and we knew we were doing a good job and many people around the world think so, and some of them called me to say they wished they did such a great job. - self congradulations by Trump.
So being positive is great so long as you’re not Trump. Good one
maxx mabemwe yeah and who’s that buddy ?
maxx mabemwe you would probably know
Being optimistic is good for your life expectancy - Trump might well live well into old age. That doesn't mean it's good for the country when he's President - keeping people safe requires realism and a solid understanding of the facts, as well as a bit of optimism - without hope people wouldn't try at all, with too much hope they don't even think there's a problem.
Yeah right. Let's be positive about the UN taking over... bloody great
Stephen lovers abound... no actual analysis of what's really going on.. pah
Brilliant. All models are wrong to some degree. Could not agree more. There is no silver bullet, it is not all black or white. But, can also understand why people crave for simplicity, as the truth is always more complex and way more uncomfortable to bear.
8:10
This is why I'm critical of optimism.
There may appear at times to be a fine line between optimism and denial, as demonstrated by DJT. I wouldn’t characterize Trump’s delusional self-agrandisement and utilization of the media to spread propaganda and control his followers as optimism.
So, in other words, to get healthy I need to unsubscribe from this channel (or just be very picky about which of your videos to watch).
Stephen Fry. Immediate click. He always speaks rationally with well researched information to underpin whatever he is saying.
Yes I’m biased in favor of Stephen Fry. Thank you.

ahhh Stephen I love your voice! It's so incredibly soothing and comforting... you help us find hope... I am sending love and wishes for your continued health and happiness!
Was this a mask advertisement?
It would be better if it was a Brain advertisement, as there's a lot of people who don't have a Brain that functions, instead readily obeying Orders, Orders which must be obeyed at all times in Planet of the Braindead. :-(
Extreme far right populist leader no better than the opposite far left but, wasn’t it common sense that Trump was unfit for the job, just his behaviour and what he said prior to the elections told me that.
Brilliant as allways. Thank you.
I think it was the Readers Digest that first proposed laughter to be the best medicine. It works for me, but I have to work harder at seeing the funny side sometimes.
Heart disease is NOT the leading cause of death for humans worldwide. State is.
Oh Steven, haven't you looked around the world lately? I'm begging for something to kill me.
Beautiful, thanks.
Stephen Fry Is used to Tell us this nonsense, because he is popular. I am sorry that he is doing this.
Stephen Fry is a candle in the dark!
Either that, or Edgar Allan Poe's, "Masque of the Red Death".
The lock down only saves lives if a cure is found. Otherwise its just dragging out the misery.
Just so you are all warned: I'm pretty confident that our (America's) response to climate change is just a slower version of our response to coronavirus. Brace yourselves.
Can I find some non politicised fact based analysis? This one is obviously pro democrat by its own assessment.
More spin. Let’s have the truth with the scientific data.
I like Stephen Fry a lot, but no matter what he says, I'm not wearing a damn mosque.
"There's never been a president even close to do what I've done." What? Betray your country and allies over and over and get away with it? He really nailed it there.
