  • If an attacker is going to punch you it's likely it'll be one of these three attacks.

      From personal experience I can say that these principles work. I outclassed a wrestler 12 years my junior and 80lbs bigger in rubber boots and a snowsuit. Angles are everything bc get you off line, they keep you positionally safe, and they open up a variety of offenses. They have saved me from people much larger than myself.

    I've been looking through your shorts lately and I love how you explain things, it's really concise and to the point and actually feels applicable!
    If you get the chance, could you make a playlist of your shorts and videos that feature women's self defense or self defense against a much larger opponent? I think videos like yours are very important for women to watch and putting them all in one place would make this vital information much more accessible 😊

    I never learned these, nice to learn them now. I was taught by a Japanese exchange student to counter a punch by doing a hip toss, or flying mare. I think it's been 40 years gone by I've never had to use it. Now I'm really out of shape :)

    It seems like a step-in to the center, for the big hook/swing punch?

    • @ManifoldSky
      @ManifoldSky 6 місяців тому

      You don’t step to the outside on a swinging hook punch because the large arc radius of the strike makes it essentially impossible to take a small step outside its radius without eating some of the punch unless you also slip, which is a harder skill to train. Conversely, however, the large arc radius of the punch gives you more time to react which allows you to better directly intercept the strike before launching a counterattack.

    In the streets nobody throws straight punches…. They throw long sloppy semi-hooks so ducking (knowing they will wrestle you afterwards) or simply blocking is more appropriate…. In a ring it’s a different story…

    What also really helps alot if you can grab a sparring partner. put on some gloves and head gear and practice simulating these techniques in real time, so that your reflexes can become sharper at picking up on fast movements.

    I recommend adding the southpaw variations for each video. Stepping off the line will change the punch. I.e, when you step right, you won't respond with a cross as your feet are opposite. Most likely will be a right hook or jab.

    Why you always put a small guy against

  • @michaelWNY
    @michaelWNY 4 місяці тому

    I disagree. This is bad advice for most people.
    1) You should not be close. Making that person step into your strike zone to reach you gives you the advantage in every way.
    2) Keep your hands up near your upper chest so that they have LEAST distance to travel if needed to block or strike. You can do that easily if you are talking to the person to attempt talking your way out of the fight, which puts you in better legal position later when the cops show up. Keep your elbows down, hands up and palms out "I don't want to fight you dude". Then when his commits, it is HIS ATTEMPTED ASSAULT and your SELF DEFENSE.
    3) Keep one foot slightly in front so that you have strong push off ability to step back. Your body is better at moving forward/back than side to side, and your legs are strongest.
    4) Keep forcing him to charge forward as you deliver defensive blows. There will be a flurry of crazy swinging as he pursues you. It happens in nearly EVERY FIGHT!
    5) When he attempts to grab you and begin a ground fight, which again happens nearly EVERY TIME, that is when you step out of the way to let his tired azz fall on his face.
    No need for anything fancy.

      Why?

    • @andrewbidwell6421
      @andrewbidwell6421 6 місяців тому

      @@Selfdefensegoat so the jab in boxing is a gagging tool for distance and timing. For most fighters it’s like a whip that they use as they circle. You don’t want to try and pin the jab because a trained fighter will adjust it into a lead hook or a body shot, neither of which is something you want to eat. The best course is not even worrying about blocking it, but to slip and hit at the same time, or in wing Chun’ case, go ahead and take the other guy’s waist and trip them to the ground using grappling. Just make sure your head’s protected, and be careful as lots of decent fighters know how fade back without committing to the hit then counterattacking with their cross or an uppercut. Ali and Tyson were both really good at staying mobile in this kind of situation.

    • @andrewbidwell6421
      @andrewbidwell6421 6 місяців тому

      @@Selfdefensegoat Of course you could watch film of George Foreman. He’s kinda known for using long guard tactics against his opponents, which resembles the blocks in Wing Chun. He doesn’t block them though. More like he stifles them before they get into a punch motion.

    • @stevemeisternomic
      @stevemeisternomic 6 місяців тому

      This is a legitimate and common tactic in boxing and fighting in general. There's only two reasons I can think of why you would make such a comment. One, he didn't pull his arm back. That is invalid because if someone has the time to slip your punch and get within hook or elbow range, you're fooked anyways. Two, you disapproved because it is not a renowned boxer showing you the move. Basically if Mike Tyson showed you the exact same move you would have been "brilliant, I've got to practice this in sparring". If that is the case then you are just bloody ignorant.
