  • Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: Contrary to popular perception, faith begins with reasoning. In fact, the Bible teaches that faith is not only compatible with reason, but that it consists of, requires, and even stimulates, profound thinking, reasoning and rationality.

This message is so compelling - one of the best I've ever heard on the subject of faith vs skepticism. When I was 12 years old I read these words in a book on faith: "God will always provide enough evidence for faith to operate but never enough evidence to convince an unbelieving mind." Today I read this from 2 Corinthians 4:4, 6 (Greek to English LITERAL translation): "the god of this age BLINDED THE THOUGHTS of the unbelieving with a view to not to shine forth the ENLIGHTENMENT of the gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God. v6 Because God the one saying "out of darkness light shall shine" who shone in the hearts of us for ENLIGHTENMENT of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." As someone who has lived a long time and done quite a bit of thinking about Christianity, I can say that I am satisfied with the evidence I have found in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is good!

Thanks for uploading it. I just have few thoughts about this message.
From what I see, faith consists of various things: thinking, emotion, experience, or any kind of deeper connections with God... I suppose there is some common ground (of course, the core conviction in the Gospel of Jesus), but I do think the proportion of the content, the look, and the tone, would vary from person to person, regarding culture background, personality, education, upbringing, etc. of each individual.
In that sense, I do feel Tim is presenting the message of faith in a way that that is more applicable to people like him, which includes a great deal of thinking and reasoning. Of course, thinking is an important element when it comes to faith, but I concern what the message may sound like for other groups of people.
People with less thinking capacity may find it difficult to give sound reasoning of what they believe, or argue their way in front of the intellects. But I do think they can still have genuine faith.
A child who has an innocent faith can come to Jesus and please Him. An uneducated fisherman, like Peter, can follow Jesus and love Him, with a faith that is passionate and fervent.
One thing I do agree with is that a solid faith has to be founded in what is "true". And Truth will change the quality of the faith for all who believes. I see that, no matter for a child, a fisherman, or an intellect, faith begins when they encounter Truth, when they are willing to take the risk and receive it. It is Truth that makes us see beyond our sight through thinking or any other venues, which to me, seems to be the point of faith.

I have to agree with you, that this sermon focuses only on one thing faith consist of. But Tim said in other Sermons, what you have said, that faith consists of various things.
But I think it's great because it contradicts a misconception in a great way and gives really good reasons on why those are wrong.

Agree. Many, many people, probably most people, come to God because He reveals himself to them through something other than scientific logical thinking. Once their eyes are opened, they're able to perceive truth and rationality. Your point about children is spot on. I became a Christian when I was 11. Had nothing to do with analyzing what I saw in the universe. Throughout my later years, as my faith was challenged and I was able to appreciate the (often deeply) troubling aspects of Christianity, I've had to do an awful lot of thinking and reasoning to decide if it all holds up.

Sometimes I Just can’t help but wonder why can’t God help me with my mental problems now? Why do I have to wait for it?

You know, I wondered the same thing for many years. I've got ADHD and Asperger so I really struggled in my youth. As time progressed I saw how I thought differently than the other kids. My interests were different, my skill-set was too. I was more creative, better at expressing myself and talking with others - young and old. God made me different but it wasn't an accident. He's been using me to help share the Gospel with children because my Aspergers helps me communicate with children far better than most. I'm a graphic designer and use the creativity that comes from my ADHD to do work for churches around the nation. I don't know what else God has in place for me, but He's most certainly used my struggles for His glory. I know it's really tough right now and you probably wish you didn't have the challenges you do - so try praying to God for ways He can use you. Ask Him to use your challenges in a way only He can and to give you strength to walk down whatever path He has for you. Almost no change can take place instantly - it\s not the big events that shape your life, it's all the little decisions you make repeatedly on a daily basis. Trust God in your daily decisions, and ask Him for wisdom and strength with your mental problems, and He will help you. Maybe not in the way you expect, but trust Him friend. He made you just the way you are so that He can use you in a way unlike anyone else. Praying for you, God bless.

I'm assuming it is because Noah built the ark by faith: "By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith."

While this was an amazing sermon, it is important to note that most atheists would be unaffected by it.
Our universe and our very existence are highly unlikely- from the strength of gravity, weight of the proton and the distribution of all the mass in the universe that would eventually make all the galaxies, stars and ultimately Earth. Then there is the supremely unlikely course of evolution from the first self-replicating bit that fortuitous emerged on Earth that eventually would became humans with free will and time to contemplate it all.
Winning a lottery million times in a row looks like a sure thing in comparison. Yet that is exactly what you have to believe to be an atheist.
What’s properly evolved, correct logic and objective morality on top of that? Sure, it increases the odds from near infinitesimal even further, but you really have to have hard invested belief that there is no God, to consider any of these as true. Logic alone hasn’t been very successful in pointing out the flaws of atheism, but I applaud Mr. Keller for pointing out the should-be-obvious.

    • @awesomeSquirel
      @awesomeSquirel 7 років тому +1

I have to disagree with you on two points.
First, even if the chance of evolution is that minimal, it does not matter, because we just happen to live in the world, where it happened. And because the Universe is infinite, it has to happen somewhere.
Second, I think Tim made that point in the sermon but did not say it explicit.I don't think something like free will can exist if there is no god because everything is just reactions.
But I agree with you that Tim made enough points to disprove most arguments for Atheism and did that very well :D

+Petar/Da di: Most atheists I know, myself included, don't say there can't be a creator god of some kind. We just don't believe there is or are not convinced. Peter the comments you made above are "evidences" pointing towards some type of deism, not Christianity and Da di made a perfect response from the non-believers point of view. You know the odds of rolling a specific set of numbers on 10 dice? We are that specific set that is highly improbable. There are no "arguments FOR atheism" because atheism is not a positive belief. It's like saying, what are the arguments for not believing that there is a pink 3 legged animal on a distant planet? There could be one, but all 3 of us don't believe there is. I'm sure you guys have heard this before and it will be an eternity before atheists and theists understand each other on this point.
