Was just solving practice questions for a medical entrance exam, and guess what one of the questions was? A 17-year-old with poor night vision - nailed it! Thanks for the unintentional prep, guys! 😄
This was incredible to watch!! Thank you for sharing your process. I knew it must be a long process to create your books, but I couldn’t have imagined it was this extensive of a project. Your work is beautiful and the illustrations are so adorable 🥰 🐧
Just had a really bad day struggling with chronic illness, and stumbling over your live stream really lifted my spirit. It's so inspiring how Paul is letting his creativity blossom with such passion! I'm an artist too, and trying to find a way to work on what I love and find success despite feeling very limited physically. Thank you both, your spirits are so beautiful and healing! Also, if my future relationship is not like yours I don't want it 😂❤
This is so cool, and “eye-opening!“ (No pun intended) As somebody who’s Legally Blind, I could never imagine seeing what Paul see’s, when He’s creating these amazing Books. But it gave me a really unique perspective on Our Blindness Community too!
I had not heard of your books until just 2 hours ago when I listened to you reading them. I love the themes and the illustrations. I'm a Teacher in Australia and can't wait for more to be in stock. The city where I live just happens to have a colony of Little Penguins that live on the breakwater. I am truly saddened by this wave of hate that is happening in the US. It is so awful. Wishing you all the best across the ocean. ❤🐧🐧🇦🇺
Fascinating process - I know a blind artist who works in traditional media, but she exclusively works on very small canvases and basically puts her glasses right up to the art, all but touching it. That way she can hold the full layout in her head and just work on very small bits of it. I imagine having the backlit screen makes a big difference tho - there's only so much light you can get on to a traditional piece when its right up against your face. Its always interesting to see the different ways that people find to make stuff work :)
I work at Flaum Eye Institute connected to University of Rochester Medical Center and mostly with pediatrics. I think you should do one on Revel and Rove! or some sort of RP centered book for the littles!! So important!! Your creations are absolutely adorable and gorgeous!!
This was so interesting to see the process you use, Paul. The pages that you showed us are so beautiful And the entire episode was comedic to watch as always. You two and Maple are simply delightful 💙💙🩵
Cutest Matthew nickname for Paul - blind boy. Mr. Maple is becoming a 2nd generation prankster. This is the third time I've seen this. Watching and listening to Paul read The Secret Ingredient makes the Patreon support worthwhile. Hugs and Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
I appreciate that want to do your artwork as traditionally as possible and put in the work even though it's 'just for kids'. So many illustrations in kids books are totally soulless. The quality of properly drawn and painted images in kids' books resonated with me as a child even if I couldn't articulate why. I glad you've found technology that allows you to produce such good illustrations.
That was so interesting! Thank you for walking us through that. I can’t imagine how Paul copes with all that static. I think it would actually drive me insane.
Yall... my mind is blown. I'm blind in my right eye, due to multiple sclerosis. NO doctor has EVER told me that this is what "normal" blindness is! Seriously, I have always told people that I'm "mostly blind" in that eye! Since I can see in that little pinhole of light, I've always felt like I was being dramatic to say I'm blind in that eye - full stop. I just stumbled across yall's channel and just asked in the comments on another video how you could see and illustrate. I feel even more stupid now, esp as someone who has been blind in one eye since 2016!! Lol. I have always considered myself to be in the category of the minority of blindness (dunno how else to word that lol...), when I suppose that's the majority! 😬🤷🏻♀️😆 I have spent sooo much time trying to explain to people how I'm blind in that eye... yet, can still see things far away && even am able to read. 🤦🏻♀️
Amazing! I'm sure the readings will be a great experience. Mr. Maple is just the cutest! Thank you Matthew and Paul, and congrats on reaching 1M subs! Cheers! 🎇💚🥳🙌
Paul, I'm wondering if you've heard of an artist named John Bramblitt? He also went blind a little later in his life and he uses traditional canvas and paints to create art. He has a method of drawing his outlines using puffy paint so he can feel them after they set, similar to that sensation blackboard they had you use at the museum, but a bit less instant. He said he can tell the paint colors apart by the way they feel between his fingers. I wonder if similar methods could help you enjoy canvas again, and be able to continue creating art once your vision is totally gone.
I sent the information to our local children's librarian. 🤞 The library is one of the best places on earth and how we indulge in a lot of our book content. In the meantime I'm starting to save for my kiddos birthday so we can have both books and maybe a Pengroom or two. ♥️
That’s so beautiful!! Paul’s rough sketches of Pringle and Finn were so adorable that I need to squish them! Eventually I’ll have a collection of Paul’s books!
I loved seeing the process of how the book was made! It was so interesting. I went and searched for the tablet covering that creates the paper feel. Great video!
Paul, they are beautifully illustrated and I think you are the perfect person to illustrate a book that can just be touched, a book that fully blinded can feel the ilustración with all the cool things you did with the colors translated to feel. Really hope to feel that project. You are the one that’s going to change how visually impaired feel and read books!
Paul I really admire your passion in art and grit despite the very challenging condition of your eyes that almost made it impossible! Thanks for inspiring me with your spirit Paul ❤
I have that paper screen cover too and it’s a major deal! It might be worth it to try swapping out your Apple Pencil tip, be sure not to screw them on too tightly, but be sure to screw them on pretty good. They make more precise tips as well. I’m an artist and I have arthritis. It started when I was 29 and it really impacted my work. I used to do murals but I can’t climb and hold onto the brushes like I used to. Paul has inspired me a lot. I’m trying to learn procreate, and remembering to separate my layers is tough! It’s frustrating. I wish you 3 all the best. Your positivity is infectious
Can you guys talk about Paul’s sobriety journey more if your comfortable and how that has affected your relationship! Im in sobriety myself and would love to hear more about that! Love you both and maple ofc ❤ hugs from Toronto

Matthew, when you said you love rough sketches so much, I was just thinking the same thing, & imagining the whole book published without colour. I'd love that! Then when Paul said it'd make a great colouring book, I imagined a childrens' colouring competition, both online (utilising computer skills) and on hard copy, et voilà, another string to your bow. Prizes could be meeting you two & Mr Maple, signed copies of the book, signed plushies, t-shirts, caps etc...
Hey Matthew and Paul I just wanted to let you know I love y’all’s videos! When I’m not having a great day I click on Matthew’s pranks and I easily laugh with y’all. I love Paul’s artwork! It’s just breathtaking on how he creates such pieces of art! I hope yall have a wonderful Christmas Day and a happy new year!
I don't have the same eye condition, but I use "eye-saver" background layers while sketching (I turn them off when adding colors). I use Grullo (#a39e8d) and Grey-Green (#5e716a) to reduce eye strain and make subtle lines more visible. These muted colors help mitigate the bright white background's harshness. For me, they stop the feeling of a thousand tiny knives from the screen.
You are amazing with what you are able to do. Have you guys considered touring and talking to people, teaching and encouraging visually disabled people. I am really enjoying and learning from you. Love from Betty in australia
Paul, I've an idea for how you can continue making your art should you ever lose the rest of your sight. Hopefully AI will be advanced enough by that time that you could have a helper digitize all the layers of each illustration of your books (and possibly other art) into an AI to have it learn the look of your illustrations, a sort of "Paul style". Then you could possibly sculpt portions of your past books in clay, and 3d scan those sculptures into the AI and link them to the 2d illustrations, so that the computer could learn how to convert your 3d sculpted shapes into 2d drawings, perhaps even just the line drawings that you referred to as the "coloring book" stage. You could then sculpt the illustrations of new books, have a computer scan a view and convert it to a "Paul style" line drawing, and release a line drawing version of the story as a coloring book to your fans, and ask your fans to photograph the best pages they color and send them back to you along with a release form giving you permission to publish their art, and from those you could put together a colored version of your children's books. If you want more consistency between the pages, you could give guidelines to the participating artists about the colors you were seeing in your head for each page or each character. Alternatively, you could make books with photographs of your sculpted illustrations. I'm not an artist, but rather an architect, but I do need my eyes for my job, and I already have an optic pit in one eye that blurs part of my foveal sight, so I'm also very protective of what is left, and can relate to fears about losing your ability to keep creating. I hope that your eyes will remain stable for many years, but if they should ever degrade further, you will explore other ways to keep creating both your compelling art and your stories. Blessings to you and your family!

Hey Paul! Have you tried using light board and makers? I bet it doesn’t look as bright as an iPad Screen (or maybe it does? I know some of them are super bright), also, have you tried this cool light boards the use at pubs and stuff? They look like glass and the pens looks like neon lights when it is turned on, I wonder if you could use it as to-do board for you and Mathew, lol.
