  • Fischer contacted us about 2 years ago and asked if we wanted to provide input as they developed a new line of Ranger skis. 2 years, multiple rounds of prototyping and testing, lots of flights, and 5 skis later, we're psyched to share the new collection.

    Very cool you had some input on these. I have to say I'm a bit skeptical of merging the two lines. I liked that you could tailor the focus of your skiing towards piste or off-piste with the old lines. I weigh as much as Bob and a case of beer and I'm not sure if the new ones would be strong enough for me. I also really liked the carbon tip and neon graphics of the old ones. I bought the 99ti's off you guys and love them so I should be good for a while. Thanks for all the great videos -and skis!

      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      Hello! All of those skis could work nicely for what you're looking to do. I'd probably rule out the Ranger 94 as you won't get as much soft snow versatility out of that ski. Unleashed, Ranger 102, Camox, or Holyshred would all be great. Unleashed and Holyshred feel like they have the most park influence to me. Camox and Ranger feel slightly more directional. I've been skiing the Unleashed 98 personally the past couple weeks and absolutely loving it, although I like the rest of those skis too. That probably doesn't help as much as you were hoping, but you've narrowed it down to a great list already.

    While Celeste may be an awesome ski color, I made the mistake, yrs ago, of painting our master bedroom what I thought was a great green color. A few strokes into it, looking at the wall, I prayed it would dry differently - unfortunately nada - I had a bedroom that looked like old-school Crest Toothpaste - I didn't even wait until the next day to buy new paint and go with some version of grey. Skis allow, especially bases that look that great, allow for unique colors - bedrooms do not. Fischer reaching out to you guys was brilliant.

  • @crtzmo

    I let your first thoughts simmer for a while -- back to this with fresh eyes. The 96 is really compelling -- my list of mid-90 all-terrain all-stars (Atomic Maverick 95, Volkl M6, BC Serpo,) just got a new member. An aspect of current skis that I haven't really heard you discuss is the actual build quality; with the exception of Stokli ("they're more expensive, but they're made very well"), I do not recall this topic getting air time. I therefore have come to assume that (1) you do not bother reviewing or recommending skis that are not well made, and (2) manufacturers are meeting an expected quality standard. Fischer, Atomic, Volkl have been at it for a long time, and Black Crows (via Elan?) seem to make a damn fine ski as well. But I'll put my assumptions to the test here: Is this Ranger 96 (and Maverick, M6, Serpo) in the same build class, or are there standouts amongst these four skis? As always, thank you -

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Curtis!
      Great questions. I'll answer them individually, then explain a little more... 1) We certainly wouldn't recommend them, and it's rare that we review something that's not well made, but it's happened before. Rarely, but it does happen... 2) The reason why it's rare is because the ski industry in general is in a really good place right now. Most manufacturers have excellent quality standards and really good quality control. You've probably heard it before, but almost no one makes a "bad ski" anymore. Even just 5-10 years ago, there were far more "bad skis" than there are now.
      Ranger 96 is certainly in the same build class as the Maverick, M6, Serpo, etc. Fischer has one of the best factories in the world and they make skis for a lot of different brands too. You'll see some of the highest quality in the industry from Fischer for sure. Volkl has some manufacturing technology that's extremely impressive, but Fischer is certainly right there in the same conversation with them, Atomic, Elan, etc.

    Well, was about to pull the trigger on the pink FR102s in 191 for an 80/20 resort-touring ski. Would you still recommend the new Ranger 102 as a tool that could serve in some limited touring situations? Weight isn't a huge concern because I would not be doing any major touring with this ski, mainly dawn patrolling and side country access. Sounds like the new 102 will still serve as a great option for softer/deeper days here in VT. Keep up the great work SE! Your content is awesome!

      Hey Lane! Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Yes, definitely, plenty of people are going to use the new 102 for some touring situations. Kyle Smaine from Fischer has been doing that a bunch already and loving it. You will start to see remaining pink 102s at a discounted price soon, so something to consider, but the new ski is really great and would work super well for what you're looking to do.

    Wish they had something in the upper 160's. 162 is a tad short and for a daily driver I like something under 170. A 166 or 67 would be perfect. I can ski longer skis just fine, I just find that mid to upper 160's lemgth to be the perfect length as a 5'8 155 pound guy.

    I own many skis, but 94fr is the most fun ski I have ever skied on hands down. The only very dissapointing thing is that the edges are very thin (1.4 to 1.6 mm ) compared to K2 skis (2.3mm) which makes me hesitant to ski in technical terrain, so I hope they have improved this and made the edges thiiiiiiick as any edge on a freeride ski should be !

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      That's a great question. I'll have to check on edge thickness, but my initial impression is that these new Rangers should be a little more durable than the outgoing ski, a lot of that has to do with having a full sidewall now.

  • @hotskillet
    @hotskillet 2 роки тому +1

    Gents thanks for the sneak peak and early review. Jeff, since you spent time on the 102, where does it fall in line with the Declivity 102TI as far as edge hold, specifically in the tails? I know the composition of the 2 skis are different but can’t help but compare the 2 since they’re virtually the same in dimensions.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      I actually think that's a really good comparison. Couple differences, however. Overall, I would say edge hold in the tails is about the same between them, but they feel different. The metal extends further into the tail in the Declivity, but the rocker is longer. So, I think it's fair to say the Declivity tail is stronger, but there's a longer effective edge in the Ranger, which kind of negates the stronger Declivity tail, if that makes sense. Then it comes down to what that does to their feel. Rangers feel more responsive, energetic, and snappier out of the tail. Declivity feels surfier, I would say slightly heavier, and more damp. It's definitely an interesting comparison and I'm glad you brought it up. I'm going to try to line up skiing them back to back sometime this spring...

    Excellent review, guys! BUT what is the difference between 21/22 Ranger 102 and the new 22/23 version(weight, shape, overall stiffness and torsional stiffness, flex of the different parts, behavior...and so on)? I'm concerned about the redesign. The Pink/Blue 21/22 version is one of the best ever skis, I have driven. Extraordinary, awesome, extra-everything! • @hotskillet
      @hotskillet 2 роки тому +1

      Pretty sure Jeff said several times that this is a smoother model; specifically in the 102. New model reduces potential chatter found in the old Carbon shovel for wood resulting in a little more dampness without sacrificing too much weight gain. He also indicated a potential trade-off a rider may be giving up on the new model was a lean towards a freestyle ability.
      Mind you, this was not a full blown comparison video, just an official release sneak peak.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      Ok, our apologies. I think we mentioned a few times that this wasn't really intended to be a full review, just a quick look at the new skis and a discussion of our involvement. We'll be doing a full-length, in-depth review of the 102 and we'll definitely be spending a lot of time on the differences between the two 102s. We'll do full reviews of the 96 too, and potentially the 90 or 108 as well. All of these will be in our 2023 Ski Test too, so you'll learn a lot of details in those videos and write-ups and get feedback from a ton of different people who have skied both 102s.
      As hotskillet pointed out, we did mention the difference in feel between the carbon nose ski and this ski with more wood and metal. It's also more directional. More directional shape, weight is about the same, the new ski feels slightly softer to me overall, but torsional stiffness feels the same, or actually probably better in just the underfoot portion of the ski. The tips and tails of the new ski feel softer and more supple to me.
      Hope that helps!

    Great review! I'm glad this video came out. I'm a big fan of Fischer skis .I do have some questions.
    -How would you compare the new 96 to the older mint colored My Ranger 96 TI or even last years My Ranger 99TI? Did I understand correctly that the new 96 they removed the carbon nose and its all wood.
    -would you recommend a more forward mounting point for females in the 90/96 like the older versions ?
    Thanks !

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      Correct, no carbon, full wood core. The metal in the 96 is longer and more to the edges versus the 102, 108, 116, but shorter than in the 90. It's more flexible than the older 96 Ti, and especially in that carbon-free shovel. It's a bit more well-rounded, I think, and more predictable from tip to tail, while keeping strong grip underfoot. For mount point, I don't think it's as easy as a blanket male/female separation. If you know that you like your bindings a bit forward, I don't think I'd go past +2 from the line--the ski seems pretty well balanced, and you might be putting more metal to the tail, and less to the front, if that makes sense.

  • @radagascar1
    @radagascar1 2 роки тому +2

    Are the tails a bit more forgiving and easy to release overall?? That's my biggest concern about the previous line being an intermediate. Love the content!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      Across the board, yes, I think that's fair to say about all of them. It's especially noticeable in the 90 vs the 92 and the 96 vs the 99, but I do think the new 102 is easier to release than the 102FR, and the 108 is definitely easier than the 107 Ti.

    Really loved the concept of the pink 102. How does the 2023 102 compare to the origin 101? Holyshred? I also have interest in your more stable at speed and damp twin/semitwin tip with a waist with of 95-102? Thanks for all the great videos!!!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      Probably somewhere in between the Origin and Holyshred in overall feel and performance. Stronger and more damp than a Origin, but lighter and definitely quicker than a Holyshred... Very well rounded ski, good blend of quickness and stability. Not the strongest ski in the world, but strong enough for most skiers, similar to the outgoing 102FR.

  • @BrandonMeyer1641
    @BrandonMeyer1641 2 роки тому +1

    Very nice looking skis. I was wondering what the 90 gains or loses from not having beach wood in the core. Is there a noticeable difference in performance? How long do you think until you get more of the popular lengths back in stock? Also does the 90 have similar abilities to release the tail edge like the 94fr did?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      The 90 feels noticeably quicker than the 96. Feels a little lighter on your feet and very agile. It's interesting, because the metal is longer, but I think dropping the beach wood makes it feel lighter and with s more energetic flex pattern. It's not exactly the same as the 94FR in terms of edge release, but they have similar maneuverability benefits.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Brian! I would say that's one of those conversations where the two skis basically accomplish the same thing, but feel different while doing so. The Maverick is snappier and more energetic in its flex pattern, which makes it feel a little more responsive. The Ranger is more supple and has more vibration damping. It's still very quick too, it's just not as reactive as the Maverick. That feeling carries through most of Atomic's skis, they're all very responsive and agile. The Ranger is smoother, but still is easy to flick around too, just doesn't feel as energetic.
      Happy to make a sizing recommendation... what's your height and weight?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      Hey Kenny! Quick answer is yes, it is still pretty close to the 107 in its overall stability. The tail doesn't feel as stiff, but the ski still feels very strong. We'll certainly have more to say about that once we get it in the terrain and snow conditions we want...

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      Ranger 92 and Serpo are both a little stronger in how they finish a turn. Stiffer tails, so you can push them a little harder. Ranger 90 is more agile than both of them, however, especially noticeable in bumps and stuff like that, but you can still ski it relatively hard too. Just not as much "oomph" as the 92 or Serpo. You could, however, consider going to the Ranger 96. Not much wider than the 92 or Serpo and despite having shorter metal, does feel a little stronger to me than the 90. Hope that helps!!

    Fantastic review! I think you said the 102 falls between the Enforcer unlimited and the Enforcer 104 free? Where does the old 102FR falls in that mix? Im currantly on the older Ranger 108Ti 15/16 model wich suppost to be a little easier than the 107, right? I am now downsizing and tested the 102FR but want something a little bit better in windpack and chopt up difficult snow. Is the new 102 that ski?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      The 102FR kind of falls in between them too, but I'd say it leans more towards the 104 Free. This new ski is easier to manipulate turn shape and feels quicker, without sacrificing stability at speed or vibration damping. Yes, the 107 got really stiff in the rail.
      I think the new 102 does stay smoother in windpack and chopped up snow than the 102FR. It's more supple and smooth, kind of feels like it has suspension, where the FR was more reactive. I've skied the new 102 in a lot of mixed conditions and really enjoy its feel. Hope that helps!

    My Volkl Mantra M6 skis look after all my on piste skiing, but I am looking for a directional ski that is more lively, and easier to release, than my current K2 Mindbender 108ti for big mountain, off piste skiing in Western Canada - navigating moguls, trees and steeps at moderate speeds; but I don’t want to sacrifice stability through chop and variable snow. I am considering the 2023 Ranger 108 (or maybe the 102 if I don’t have to give up too much float), the Nordica Unleashed 108, the Dynastar M-Free 108, or even the Blizzard Rustler 11. Advice on the relative merits of these alternatives? Thanks for the great reviews!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      Hello! All good options there. I would say the Ranger 108 will feel closest to your current skis. Stable, powerful, but I do think they feel a little easier to release than the Mindbender. That ski can be a handful at times, while the Rangers feel lighter to me, which at least is reducing fatigue when making those quicker turns. Going through the rest of your list, I would say the Unleashed 108 is next in line. Not as strong as the Ranger 108, but pretty darn close, yet easier to pivot. The next ski I would say would be the Rustler 11, along the same path. Not as strong, easier to pivot. Then the M-Free 108 really starts to lean more towards the "easy to pivot, playful" side of the spectrum rather than the "stability through chop" side. Hope that helps!!

    Can you expand on the comparison to the previous 102FR? Looks like they dropped the carbon nose, extended the wood to the tip and a bit more metal (previous just for mounting). Are they heavier, stiffer, is that rocker still "long and low"? The previous 102FR was so easy to turn and get on edge, but stable at high speed, not great on ice.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      Hi Melissa! Weight is about the same. Flex pattern, I actually find the new 102 feels slightly softer. The Carbon Nose was quite stiff. That made the ski very responsive and quick, but could be pingy sometimes, or as you found, not tremendously great on really firm snow. There's more vibration damping and smoothness in this new ski, but there's still plenty of rocker too. To speak specifically to your comment, I find the new ski is just as easy to turn, just as easy to get on edge, but you gain some vibration damping, which I find makes them more comfortable at higher speeds. Hope that helps!

      Not really. Well, yes and no, but in my opinion, mostly no. The QST 98 has much longer rocker both in the tip and tail than even the Ranger 102. That gives it a more surfy feel, especially in softer snow conditions. The Rangers have more responsiveness and a longer effective edge, especially in the 96. That gives them a more precise feel on turn entry and they're a bit stronger overall, in my opinion, or at least better connectivity to the snow, which I think translates to more stability for most skiers.

    • @SkiEssentials

      In trees, I think the new shape and build works better, but if you're looking for edge grip and stiffness in a jump turn style of skiing chutes, I'd prefer the older version. Overall, I think the new build in the 102, specifically, will work better for more skiers. Haven't gotten on the longer 96 yet, so I can't speak as well to that ski, but the 180 that I have skied isn't quite as grippy or snappy as the 94 FR.

    Hi, many thanks for the interesting testing work you have realized with the new Ranger collection 2023. Is it possible to test/comment this range independently and without bias after having had opportunity to visit and co-developping Fischer Sports during almost one year? My second question: Since 2 years I have been driving the Ranger TI 99 wich is my absolute buddy in any snow conditions because the actual TI99 is very snappy, has a very neutral stand and has enough rocker to go deep and steep in new powder conditions. I had the opportunity to test the new 2023 96 Ranger and in comparison with the actual TI99 model, it feels less grippy and less precise in packed and hard snow. What is the test crew opinion regarding the comparison current and upcoming model. Likes/dislikes? I am looking forward to having a feedback. Thanks a lot. Daniel (Switzerland)

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Daniel!
      Yes, absolutely. We'll never say anything like "these are the best." We pride ourselves on objectively analyzing skis. These new Rangers are extremely well-rounded, but there are certainly skis that outperform them in certain categories.
      I agree, the 96 is a little looser than the 99Ti. They took some influence from the 94FR in its development. Kind of like if you blended the 99Ti and 94FR into one ski. Not as precise as the 99, but far more versatile.
      I would say the major strength of this new line of Rangers is versatility. Where in the previous Ti and FR lines, you had to choose one strength over another (for example, choosing the 99Ti gave you great stability, but as the cost of some maneuverability in technical terrain). Now, you can simply choose a width and you can remain confident it's going to ski appropriately for the conditions and terrain that width is intended for. Does that make sense?

    How does the Ranger 90 compare to the Mindbender 90ti (or new 89ti) and the Rustler 9. It seems more playful than the Mindbender, but would you say it has markedly better firm snow grip than the Rustler 9 (which is surprisingly good for its shape)? Also, how would you describe the skiing stance preferred by the ski? The Mindbenders liked to have its shovels driven, where as the Rustlers could be skied from a more centered stance.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому

      It basically feels like a lighter Rustler to me. I think that's a better comparison than the Mindbender 90 or new 89. The shaping concept is pretty similar to a Rustler, but it definitely feels lighter on your feet. I think edge grip between the Rustler and Ranger 90 is basically even, hard for me to pick a winner there. Maybe Rustler just because it's a little heavier, but then the Ranger 90 feels noticeably quicker to me. Super fun and responsive in bumps, that's easily one of my favorite things about it. It prefers more of a centered stance, IMO, although I think you can drive the shovel a little more actively than the Rustler. Hope that helps!

      There aren't many... but the previous 102 is a better ski for someone looking to mount it more centered. Its shape and construction supports more variety in mount points. I would also say it's a little more responsive with the stiffness of the Carbon Nose, but there's a downside to that too. More responsive, but also got deflected a lot more easily. The new 102 is still a very responsive ski overall, but it's smoother and doesn't react to things when you don't want it to, so to speak...

      I’m in agreement with you on the color/graphics of these 2023’s. They just don’t pop for me and I will pass on the 2023 line for that reason. (Current owner of blue 2021 Ranger 102 FR’s bought mainly for western tree skiing on pow days. I love everything about these skis.) Top skin wise I had the same problem with the old Nordica Enforcer 88’s but they ski so damn good I bought them anyways. Regardless of the miss for me on these 2023’s graphics wise I really like what Fischer is doing design wise. Fischer skis were off my radar screen since my racing days until the pink and blue Ranger 102 FR’s were introduced.

      I genuinely think they ski better than the outgoing skis. I can understand that some people are bummed about the lack of a pink ski. What I find exceptionally interesting, is people see to either LOVE these graphics, or kinda HATE them. Very few people have had more of a middle-ground opinion of them.

    Why even designate it as men and women skis?

      One one hand I have no idea. It's all wood, metal, and plastic so there's no reason to gender skis. On the other hand, people still shop that way so manufacturers and dealers still have to organize their products in this manner.
