I used to work at Stewart and Stevenson in Sealy, Texas as a Welder and helped build these vehicles. I remember the company changed to Armor Holdings and then now its BAE Systems.
FYI, the broken headlight is a blackout headlight. It uses a 12 volt bulb and a green filter. Not IR but for night vision goggles. Also, the panel supports go in the small box with the double pins. You can reset the transmission computer and switch to atf to make it shift easier. Check the maintenance manual. Finally, don't raise the cab with door open. You'll warp the cab and it's not fixable.
I drove around 300 brand new LMTV's over a week when they where fielded at Ft. Stewart. The lowboy's delivered them to a giant field a few miles from main Camp and Maint had to relay them back to the units motor pools. We took a few on detours to see what they would do! All most got one stuck so yes we had fun. Hope you never need to do any electrical work on it...
Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) I had guessed Light Military Tactical Vehicle. When the bed of the truck is 5 feet of the ground it's not a sissy ladder it is a necessary piece of equipment unless you can jump like Spud Webb.
This trucks were designed in Austria by Steyr Daimler Puch in Steyr. But they had to be built in the US, and Stewart and Stevenson was the partner doing that. But the quality wasnt the there as expected.
We remove and store the panels for loading palletized equipment, the framework can stay in place as long as your truck didn't have the jump-seats in the bed installed you're good to go. We also only use JP-8 (close to JET-A) if we're refueling from a military fueling point-- in the NG you refuel from a civilian fuel point about 70% of the time and run #1/#2 ULSD. 88-M
Hey Wes I know it's been a year but, if you happen to know, what would a blank letter plate (maybe was painted over) and 11 for the numbers. does the 21 mean it's heavier?
35' is the radius, from turn center to outside front corner of the cab. your wall to wall distance is really going to be about 65' (70 for continuous circles between walls, but you can clip one side by starting out flat against it and pulling away)
Your "Turret Cover" is were a Ring Mount is fitted for those vehicle selected to mount either a FN M-240G, 7.62x51mm NATO (308 Win) or a Browning M-2HB .50 caliber 12.7x99mm heavy machinegun for convoy protection.
Talking about the tires, a friend of mine says his father gets the military surplus tires because ther cheap. He said when a tire gets a nail or goes flat they tend to replace the whole set and the good ones go to the used surplus stores
I have a funny story about a truck like that. Once upon a time in Korea a infantry guy left his kevlar in the front seat, and when they flipped the cab it busted the windshield out. It was winter time and this happened out in the field. he had to drive it around for like a month and drive it back to base, lol.
hey guys I did pause on the weight spec and they are some pretty serious numbers you have.I don't think any one alive would carry 8 tons of camping gear, but lol imagine the amount a cold beer you could carry ,never get thirsty again lol thanks for sharing ,kind regards Kerry
Years ago Stewart and Stephenson used to be the rebuild facility for Detroit Diesel. They were in Houston Texas. With Detroit Diesel stopping of their two stroke diesels years ago they started building military vehicles
Watching you two dorks fumble and joke around this goofy vehicle was the most entertainment I've had with morning coffee in a while. The jokes just write themselves. Best quote of the vid? @18:16 Save the JP-8 for the theoretical helicopter that you'll be lifting this with. I think those lift eyelets would be more for putting this POS on a cargo ship bound for a peace-keeping mission in some Mid-Eastern or African shjthole. LMTV = Low Maintenance Toy Vehicle. Glad you plugged the podcast, I'll be tuning in for the non-stop laughs.
hey guys love your video,Im a kiwi living in perth western Australia and do remote camping a bit.Great informative video guys keep up your awesome work mate.
I work on these in the 82nd, we still use these all the time because they rock! Let me know if you need any help with wiring schematics or pneumatic schematics. Have fun 🤘🏼

In our Iraqi LOG Base, a young lady drove her LMTV the wrong way off a cocrete slab & nosed down into a some muddy sludge covered with a generous layer of often damp River rock. (Our Batt. Commamder spread that slippery shit EVERYWHERE as 'eye candy', and, as it turned out, secondary projectiles for our nightly mortar barrages). ANYWAY, We ended up using our old reliable Duece to drag her truck back up onto the slab as the LMTV's front axle wouldn't engage at all, ultimately leaving her stranded with only one wheel turning. Personally I'd LOVE to get my hands on one with the command van, to camp with.
I have put many miles on LMTV's . Most notable experance was when i had one brake its transmission with less than 6,000 miles on the odmeter. I drag raced a 1078 with my M35A2 and left him in the dust. Not that eather truck accelerate very fast not fast enough to make the MP's think your trying to race to 35mph.
looks like you have a few inches of adjustment on that wiper blade. you can get it to wipe more to the left (looking out). just detach it and reattach it a little further on in the travel.
The front light that is broken is the a "black out drive light", just puts out a tiny bit of light for night maneuvers, don't run out of the cab tilt oil the system burns it as it works and its supposedly pricey.
Well done Buck I was looking at one of these on BAT "bring a trailer auction site" With one day to go Th current bit is $13,500. Just to give people a idea what they could buy one for. Now we know about the "S & S M1079 it's not a Unimog " all one word. tks
Good basic informational video. Looks like a bit more work to go. I hope your buddy keeps going it. I flew Chinooks, so it is easily lifted by helicopter. Cheers!
The goodyear tires on that are rated up to 87mph under load. The Michelin XZLs like your spare are only rated for 60 mph. But the Michelins have cooler tread and better offroad traction.
my father worked at the factory where that truck was built from some time in the mid to late 90s to the day they closed the factory he was one of the mechanical engineers that made that truck happen great trucks grew up around them and me and my dad plan to own one in the future I'm sure he would love this vid the next-gen after the S&S model like u have armor holdings own the factory and later around 2007 to 2010 BAE systems own the factory but through the company changes the same guys drew up and built those trucks
Enjoyed your video!! This company made this truck for a number of manufacturers but the grill with the offset slats was common of the Steyr trucks from Austria. This is the the US version but with the Steyr grill
I love the seats for your kids. My Mom would have loved this truck for when my brother and I were teens. She would have thought, I could get an months load of groceries in the back of the truck!
If someone else hasn't already suggested it, the tailgate panel i believe is stored on the headboard of the bed (appears to be channels on the headboard for that purpos). Thats how the MTVRs do it and id be suprised if the idea wasn't stolen right off the FMTVs

damn nice truck , I''ve always loved military vehicles and currently own several retired military trucks ,, I DON'T own a Deuce yet but i have something better in 2001 before the military started recapping used trucks and rebuilding them i bought an original M977-A1 cargo truck it hadn't been driven in years ,,paid just $8000 for it and had a friend with a 50 ton wrecker tow it home for me 5 years it took to fully rebuild it ,, it's one of the most fun vehicles i have ever driven in 2015 i broke the original allison automatic transmission which led to another complete going over because i could not get a replacement transmission and mine was unfixable this resulted in my completely replacing the 2 stroke detroit diesel and the automatic transmission the engine i chose was a cummins ISX coupled to an EATON 18 speed autoshift ,,it made a massive difference in the way this huge truck drives ,the 16 liter cummins engine has 575HP and it's all automated even more fun when you start pulling something cause i haven't found a truck that can out pull me
I have a deuce but thinking about one of these . I love the way the deuce looks . But I think the SS would be more practicle . Power steering and a better turning radius .
My M923A1 goes flat out at 60 mph also at around 8 mpg and the tire speed rating is printed on the tire sidewall and if you open the fuel screw you may burn a piston and or burn you tranny. There are alot of truck rollovers when our brave service people try to hot rod these trucks, You mite be surprised how easy it is to flip. The ABS is a maybe on a good day. Good video.
Great tour! I know this is an older video but I want one of these things so bad!! Like every other jackass, I want to make an overland rig and head south. I spend a fair amount of time racing down there and dream of just going down there and maybe points even further south for an extended period of time.
Love it! Thanks for the thorough overview. Quite an amazing and capable machine. I'm going to have to look into this...I wonder about registration/licensing (the vehicle and the driver) and insurance. I guess it shouldn't be any different from any other industrial truck. The machine gun would be a nice option. Very nice job fitting center seats in there.
I will however say, that you MUST know what you're doing when traversing off-road with these trucks, as, unlike the old Deuce and a Halfs... these are VERY top-heavy, and will tip without the slightest warning... especially if you have any load on the back. Almost rolled one on an expressway exit-ramp after installing a mobile-office compartment on the back... basically turned it into a giant mobile home without amenities... and I was going well below the "recommended" truck speed limit for that turn. When you think you're in control with these trucks... you're not. Just assume your cab latch will fail at any moment and you'll flip over the front-end. So yeah... the biggest thing I can tell you... is to make sure your cab latch and jack are always functional, and that your limit chains are always in good condition... because if they're not... well... let's just say it's going to be about 40x more expensive than it would be to service and/or replace every 3 months or every off-road trip/as needed... Basically... look at it wrong... and it'll go face-flat before you can understand what is happening.
Just came across this video and it sounds like your local (I’m in Tacoma). These trucks have interested me for a while but I’m wondering how difficult it is to get them licensed?
Will not "RUN" is the Motor T techs saying "It'll run, but we don't jump them or do anything more than press the start button for auction sales". Didn't see that mentioned, may have been, just wanted to note it. Great video, looks like a great vehicle!!!!
Bro, that's a screamen the trucks built to military spec, so you know what your getting, The cat C7 had two problems first being the HUEI hydraulic activated electronic injection, not the best design ever, but yours is mechanical injection, half the problem solved, the other issue is the ecm can half a short life. But all in all a solid motor that's been around a long time first 3116 then the 3126 that was replaced by the c7, If this is truly a mechanical pump you should be able to turn it up with Cat software and get more ponies out of this engine.
First of all, thank you for making such a comprehensive walk around video. I do have one question though. You mentioned being able to change the gearing on it to achieve a higher cruising speed. Do you know how much that would cost and where I could get the parts or have it done?
Have you guys ever seen GOONZQUAD here on YOU TUBE they just bought a TRUCK like that except it has a BOX on the back not a FLAT BED but overall the TRUCK is just like that one you need to get in touch with them they don't understand the functions & things about their TRUCK they are lost as far as the TRUCK they have is concerned they will appreciate anything you can steer them on about their TRUCK as I say their name is GOONZQUAD & they do have a CHANNEL here on YOU TUBE
It is a FMTV which is Family of Mobile Tactical Vehicles made by Stewart and Stevenson. It is a company out of Texas if it still exist. That truck is the version of the two and half ton and the six wheel version is the five ton. The fuel is diesel, JP8 is the military designation for diesel fuel. The horn is weak for a large truck.

You can reset the transmission computer and switch to atf to make it shift easier. Check the maintenance manual.
Finally, don't raise the cab with door open. You'll warp the cab and it's not fixable.
Thanks for the info!
mdlee52 join the lmtv mtv military truck group on fb. Lots of advice
I'm not on Facebook, but I'll forward the information to my cousin.
Great advice
CARGO TRUCK.... IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE !!
A MILLION REAL MEN JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH TRUCKS AGAIN !!
I drove around 300 brand new LMTV's over a week when they where fielded at Ft. Stewart. Why about electrical work?
Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) I had guessed Light Military Tactical Vehicle. When the bed of the truck is 5 feet of the ground it's not a sissy ladder it is a necessary piece of equipment unless you can jump like Spud Webb.

(LMTV) - Light Medium Tactical Vehicle
The 6x6 is considered the MTV (Medium Tactical Vehicle)

The tonnage rating for military trucks is how much the truck can carry offroad, and is generally half of the onroad payload rating.
The C 21 on the front is the "Bridge Plate". It's a weight/class marker to ensure a particular bridge can handle a specific vic.
2.5 tons is the OFF-ROAD rating, mostly because of the tires. We regularly put far more on them.
Your "Turret Cover" is were a Ring Mount is fitted for those vehicle selected to mount either a FN M-240G, 7.62x51mm NATO (308 Win) or a Browning M-2HB .50 caliber 12.7x99mm heavy machinegun for convoy protection.
Nice!
Wow, I wonder if she's seen some action 🤔 , very nice, realiabilty must be fantastic.
Ring mount with a gun is cool until it’s raining or cold out. Raining when’s it’s cold while running the crew serve just a ball of joy.
I would like to say this was a great over view of the LMTV . I hope to join the LMTV club one day soon :)
Pull the driver wiper arm off the spline shaft and move it a couple splines to the right to make it reach farther across the windshield
The drivers wiper is bent to the left as you face the truck, straightening it might help some too.
take wiper off at gears move 1 tooth over
If you'll scrub your blades with Scotch bright, they'll last lobger!
You mean you can't reach out the window and wipe that with your own hand? Freaking sausages!

Oh man! The possibilitys! You build a killer camper for the back that slids on and off. Super cool truck!
Our volunteer Fire Department has one. I t has been painted, we installed a tank and pump. Good truck, and I call it Big Nasty for obvious reasons.
You could easily re-position the wiper arm in front of the drivers seat and have it cover your view.
How?
I have a 1973 Case MB 4/94 and I appreciate the LMVT. I like the ability to carry cargo or have a support vehicle. Nice vehicle!
I also have a 75 case unimog I used for weed spraying have RR wheels a brush chopper, 8 ft mower IAM in Los Angeles area to far for off road fun.
Nice find, I maybe even painted this one at Stewart & Stevenson.
Quality built vehicle that's for sure.
The commentary between you tow is legendary. If I'm stuck on an island, I hope you come and hang out with me. Awesome rig, enjoy!
Thank you, my friend.
Awesome video Uncle Buck
Years ago Stewart and Stephenson used to be the rebuild facility for Detroit Diesel. They were in Houston Texas. With Detroit Diesel stopping of their two stroke diesels years ago they started building military vehicles
Wiper, Pull out the wiper arm and reset it on the motor spline connector clockwise so that'll it'll swing over the inches you need?
The FMTV line is amazing. Also Light medium tactical vehicle, is a variant of the FMTV line of which there are many.
Watching you two dorks fumble and joke around this goofy vehicle was the most entertainment I've had with morning coffee in a while. The jokes just write themselves. goonsquad also have one but they have a box on the back verry cool truck dude greetings from holland
hey guys love your video,Im a kiwi living in perth western Australia and do remote camping a bit.Great informative video guys keep up your awesome work mate.
i know i am way late to the party but i must say even though i own a 71 m35a2 i do like your rig!
I work on these in the 82nd, we still use these all the time because they rock! Let me know if you need any help with wiring schematics or pneumatic schematics. Have fun 🤘🏼

When i got out of the active army, i joined the guard and reclassed from a 14S to become a medic. It was a year long, one weekend a month NG training course. My MOS was based on the Avenger system, so i incorrectly thought every soldier had driven and maintained vehicles. It was a good life lesson.
I hate that I never got trained on these. I love the way they look and fondly call them "Tonka Trucks"
I love the details that you guys showed I didn't find any other video on those details. 👍
Goonzquad just bought one of these but it has a box on the back and not the flat bed.
Its a LMTV
Light medium Tachtical Vehicle.
With all the air on that rig, my first move would be a train horn !
If you don’t know, then you’ll never understand… I added an extra 20 gallon tank for my train horns.
They are totally necessary in this vehicle.
A Prius, no.
An LMTV?
Absolutely, so I added three.
Pffftt…
At 9:19 on the video I learn more about things on this truck that I have in 20 other videos thank you.
I enjoy watching these type of videos you have done. Good commentary on both ends. Looking forward to more.
It was enjoyable to do. A bit lengthy, but fun. Thanks.
I have put many miles on LMTV's . Most notable experance was when i had one brake its transmission with less than 6,000 miles on the odmeter. i have a 98 M1078 good info on it, thanks
The front light that is broken is the a "black out drive light", just puts out a tiny bit of light for night maneuvers, don't run out of the cab tilt oil the system burns it as it works and its supposedly pricey.
That thing is a true off road beast thanks for the tour
I felt bad I couldn't get more action shots, but if you look up their social media you can see all the action shots. Truly a capable vehicle.

Nice truck I have drove a military truck before. It was a lil bigger then that and it’s used to carry soldiers
I wouldn't mind owning a truck like this one day. Gotta get more property first though. No room for parking.
Enjoyed your video!! This company made this truck for a number of manufacturers but the grill with the offset slats was common of the Steyr trucks from Austria. This is the the US version but with the Steyr grill
Thanks for the info!
thank you for share great video big 4x4
from Australia
I loved the humor in this video! Turret or escape hatch...
6 Years later, I'm just watching this. Love the bit about the Horn. Hey... My truck's having an identity crisis. It thinks It's a Toyota.
I love the seats for your kids. My Mom would have loved this truck for when my brother and I were teens. She would have thought, I could get an months load of groceries in the back of the truck!

I drove these in the army. They are cool as hell and way better than the old deuce and a half.
LMTV = Light Medium Tactical Vehicle.
BTW: The Unimog can go 1.2m (47")deep into water, and there's an armoured version of it called "Dingo" in the german Bundeswehr.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATF_Dingo
Those are impressive vehicles. To my untrained eye, any cabover military vehicle is a Unimog. Lol
But the Unimog was invented mainly as a civilian vehicle. The military use came later, and it's still much in use in the civilian sector. It was invented as a multi-purpose vehicle for farmers (tractor), coal suppliers and so on.
Unimog = Universelles MotorGerät which is literally translated "Universal Motor device". And it's really universal, for example you can use it on railway tracks or add several tools on it like snow blowers, jaw crusher or lawn mowers:
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2c/2Mercedes-Benz_Unimog_mit_M%C3%A4harm.jpg
On the wiper, try removing, rotating a couple of splines and reinstalling.
Michael Shumer, that would just have it parking in the wrong place.
You can pull the arm and re-position it to your desired spread, FYI.
damn nice truck , I''ve always loved military vehicles and currently own several retired military trucks ,,
I DON'T own a Deuce yet but i have something better
in 2001 before the military started recapping used trucks and rebuilding them i bought an original M977-A1 cargo truck
it hadn't been driven in years ,,paid just $8000 for it and had a friend with a 50 ton wrecker tow it home for me
5 years it took to fully rebuild it ,, it's one of the most fun vehicles i have ever driven
in 2015 i broke the original allison automatic transmission which led to another complete going over because i could not get a replacement transmission and mine was unfixable
this resulted in my completely replacing the 2 stroke detroit diesel and the automatic transmission
the engine i chose was a cummins ISX coupled to an EATON 18 speed autoshift ,,it made a massive difference in the way this huge truck drives ,the 16 liter cummins engine has 575HP and it's all automated
even more fun when you start pulling something cause i haven't found a truck that can out pull me
Credit where credit is due: this is actually an Austrian Steyr 12M18 adapted to US Army specs and license-built by Stewart & Stevenson
Is the cab Iveco sourced?
i tought so. they put a american engine in it...
I have a Steyr but it runs on .308.
that's a black out light, and the word is bow's as in bow an arrow, they are used as you know the canopy to cover troops or cargo, my compliments sir
I have a deuce but thinking about one of these . I love the way the deuce looks . But I think the SS would be more practicle . Power steering and a better turning radius .
You can adjust that wiper to cover to the end....You take the wiper off and adjust on the teethforward
Wiper Blades: You could loosen the nut on the base ( the round part ) and move the wiper up a little to make up the difference!
My M923A1 goes flat out at 60 mph also at around 8 mpg and the tire speed rating is printed on the tire sidewall and if you open the fuel screw you may burn a piston and or burn you tranny. _Very convinient truck, is it better than am ganneral ?_
You should be able to do 70+ in yours stock, there is an electronic limiter you can have disabled.
Interesting.
Love it! Thanks for the thorough overview. Quite an amazing and capable machine. I'm going to have to look into this...I wonder about registration/licensing (the vehicle and the driver) and insurance. I guess it shouldn't be any different from any other industrial truck.

So yeah... the biggest thing I can tell you... is to make sure your cab latch and jack are always functional, and that your limit chains are always in good condition... because if they're not... well... let's just say it's going to be about 40x more expensive than it would be to service and/or replace every 3 months or every off-road trip/as needed... Basically... look at it wrong... and it'll go face-flat before you can understand what is happening.
Great info. Thanks.
Just came across this video and it sounds like your local (I’m in Tacoma). These trucks have interested me for a while but I’m wondering how difficult it is to get them licensed?
Are the axles equipped with Differential Locks ?
Good question. I don't know, but hopefully someone else will see your comment and help you out.
LMTV = Light Medium Tactical Vehicle.
Good lord guys... I haven’t laughed this hard at a video in a long time... Well done, great quick humor.
Do they have this in a 6x6 or even a 8x8 ? Thanks, also very nicely done video, you explain the truck nice and clear, easy to understand……
What year did they go from mechanical to electronic injectors and what not?
Will not "RUN" is the Motor T techs saying "It'll run, but we don't jump them or do anything more than press the start button for auction sales". Didn't see that mentioned, may have been, just wanted to note it. Great video, looks like a great vehicle!!!!
Very nice. Great video all the best to you and yours Sir.
Thank you and the same to you, sir.
You guys are hilarious and love the truck
Bro, that's a screamen the trucks built to military spec, so you know what your getting, The cat C7 had two problems first being the HUEI hydraulic activated electronic injection, not the best design ever, but yours is mechanical injection, half the problem solved, the other issue is the ecm can half a short life. But all in all a solid motor that's been around a long time first 3116 then the 3126 that was replaced by the c7, If this is truly a mechanical pump you should be able to turn it up with Cat software and get more ponies out of this engine.
lol, this guys a riot! "Pull from the rear"😅
Sweet rig, have you seen the one on the Goonzquad channel? The apocalypse vehicle.
First of all, thank you for making such a comprehensive walk around video. I do have one question though. You mentioned being able to change the gearing on it to achieve a higher cruising speed. Do you know how much that would cost and where I could get the parts or have it done?
JP-8 is high grade diesel / jet fuel used in diesel trucks and the turbine engines in the M1 Abrams tank.
Bit late finding vid, but for sure would say driving that man card is safe!! What new truck doesn't sound like a vw bus nowadays!!!!
Question. Is there anyway you can rotate the right hand windshield wiper a couple of splines? Most wipers mount on a spline shaft and can be rotated.
That's a good idea.
AWESOME vid,excellent narration 👍🙋♂️🇬🇧
Why not reindex the wiper so it goes further across the windshield?
The 6x6 6ton dump truck kick ass
It is a FMTV which is Family of Mobile Tactical Vehicles made by Stewart and Stevenson. It is a company out of Texas if it still exist. That truck is the version of the two and half ton and the six wheel version is the five ton. The fuel is diesel, JP8 is the military designation for diesel fuel. The horn is weak for a large truck.
