Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (S.M.R.) would do wonders for the electricity sector in Jamaica. The economy would grow and develop much faster. The cost of energy in Jamaica is too expensive to attract serious high value investors in manufacturing, motor vehicle assembly, aluminum production and other productive sectors.
You think nuclear power is going to be cheaper than what we have now, think again. Do we have the staff to manage and support this industry, is there a surplus of available staff to hire from abroad? I agree that the cost of Electricity needs to be reduced, burn the rubbish that is piling up everywhere to generate the power we need.

The Canadian companies are able to provide two to three small Modular Nuclear Reactors producing 300 megawatts each. If this is achieved within the next ten years, the Jamaican economy would grow and develop very fast. Jamaica can achieve development status in the next twenty to thirty years.

What the government will have to do is relocate the nuclear plant off the island maybe to one of the smaller islands or in middle of the sea (like an oil rig). In order for some people to not complain about it being dangerous and demanding it be shut down as we have seen in other countries. That is horrible and dangerous. I hope they will not do that, I hope our people know that it can be used against us, Plus if we can't trust the people running this country to do regular maintenance to keep the roads safe,, how can you trust them to maintain the power plants and keep us safe? We also don't have any military defense to protect us from having the power plant being used against us.

Canada and other countries have been using nuclear power for years without any incident. Infact my Nephew works as an engineer at one of the plants here. Of course there's a risk in everything but proper maintenance can mitigate the risk factors.

There is a nuclear plant at the UWI for close to 50 years. There was never any problem there with that reactor.

Jamaica does not have the finances and expertise to design, build, and maintain nuclear power stations. And to handle emergencies?
They been doing research and teaching about nuclear at UWI for year UWI has nuclear and it hasn't killed anyone
