    re: manners we have because of tradition and should get rid of. No elbows on the table, iirc, exists because sailors would get used to having to hold their tables on ship still while eating during rough water, and would continue to do so on land. Then, because sailors were often rowdy and such, people began to see the elbows on a table as rude and it's so pointless

    British person here (for those interested in the riveting toilet conversation lmao): “Loo” is regional, “Toilet” is generally what we call a… toilet (like a public toilet or at home) and “Bathroom” is a toilet with a bath in it. No one says “water closet”, WC is only on maps or toilet signs on like trains and public places (if not a gendered/non-gendered symbol)

      As a plumber I use the term “water closet” a lot, but never to refer to a room. Rather, we use water closet to refer to the toilet itself. All plumbing regulations in the building code (at least where I’m from) use the word water closet to refer to toilets, and all blueprints that includes the locations of plumbing fixtures use “WC” to indicate where a toilet is located. The rooms themselves are called bathrooms (with a bath/shower) and powder rooms (without a bath/shower).
      Sorry for the long comment, but this is genuinely an interesting convo to me lol

    In case this gets to Jacob&Julia: water closet is derived from "wash-down closet", as in tiny room for using the flushing toilet. You wash the pee and poo down with water as opposed to doing the business down a hole with either a bucket or a sewer below it.

    • @Bloodanna
      @Bloodanna 11 місяців тому +2

      It is also referred to as a closet because when the flush toilets were first introduced most houses didn't have space for them in the bathing room and so they retrofitted literal closets to put in the toilet (and some times a sink).

It's got the same "Fuck everyone else around me, only I matter" that his description of New York has, but with literally zero awareness of your surroundings or common sense. Before the 16th century, when flushing toilets more or less as we know them today appeared, (though it didn't immediately fall out of fashion afterwards) "toilet" didn't mean, you know, the porcelain throne itself, but rather a general washing/freshening up room (think of "toiletries"), while the place where you went to do your business was a type of "closet". Before closets became either a small room, or a piece of furniture (or a mix, as in walk-in closets) dedicated to clothes, it was a term that referred to any small, private room, with no specific use attached to the term. The "water closet" then was a small, private room, where the flushing toilet was, and it was called that instead of simply something like, iunno, "filth closet" (great name for a band, btw), was because it differentiated it from "earth closets", which used the far older, more traditional system of shitting straight down a hole into the earth. Nowadays, since those went out of style (or became "out-houses"), leaving the water system as the standard, and the word "closet" became relegated to clothes-storage, the term "water closet" may seem meaningless, but it was a very specific, important distinction to make. Also, like a lot of things, the name has survived as a fancy, almost euphemistical way to refer to the private room where you go to piss and shit. It just sounds nicer, especially if you have to ask where it is to a stranger.

    • @leopoldbloom4296
      @leopoldbloom4296 11 місяців тому +7

      Before anyone asks, I know this because I also have wondered what "water closet" meant before, not because I'm some kind of toilet historian. If I were I'd explain that rudimentary forms of toilets flushed via a flow of water go back to the neolithic and the distinction we're making here is of fixtures connected to some kind of sewage system flushed through the use of a water reservoir and gravity, and which may or may not make use of a P pipe in order to create a hydraulic seal-- I MEAN I'M NOT A TOILET HISTORIAN SHUT UP LEAVE ME ALONE

    Speaking of bad drivers, when my family was moving to our new home, our minivan was fully pushed off the freeway in the middle of the desert by a giant u-haul and now theyre sueing us even though it was entirely their fault 🙃

    British person and a bit of a history nerd. You have to understand that the term Water Closet comes from a time when indoor plumbing wasn’t a thing. The upper class could afford to have small rooms in their homes where they “made water” (an incredibly old, posh, overly polite way of saying they need to piss), then some poor bastard would have the unpleasant job of cleaning it out and disposing of it. So no there wouldn’t have been running water in the kitchen or anywhere in the property.
    No one says it any more, and the signs on toilet doors have either the people symbols or the word toilet on them. But the map symbol WC kinda stuck around because it was a symbol we all recognised. Like how the symbol for call is still a landline phone despite landlines being almost obsolete.

    Omg YES! Someone else noticed the crazy CO drivers!!! We just moved back to Seattle, but while we lived in CO everyone who lived there thought we were crazy for thinking drivers are just mindless in CO 😂 like several times I’ve experienced people stop at a red light, look both ways, and then just go! I have also been honked at for stopping at a stop sign. I used to fear for my safety on my daily commute

    the random question about "water closet" made me look it up, it's called that because it's a small private room (a den, if you will) with a waste-pipe that flushes water. it's almost disappointingly literal. the more you know! also this reminds me of a story my aunt once told me, her name starts with a W and her elementary school had a WC sign shaped as a heart, and people would tease her for the toilet door having her and another classmate's initials in a heart lol. we're norwegian so kids especially wouldn't immediately know that WC is english, and it did also blow my mind when my aunt told me what WC stood for back then
    editing to add about "restroom" as well, a restroom used to literally be a room for rest in a workplace, and it was only later that they added toilets to the package. restroom became synonymous with toilet because people used it as a euphemism, just like powder room! like, essentially instead of saying "i gotta pee" people would be saying "i gotta have a rest ;)" by calling it a restroom, u feel? i found all this on etymonline, by the way! etymology is neat

    You've Got Mail is a modern take on the movie The Shop Around the Corner from 1940 which is itself an adaption of a (slightly) older play which is one reason why it feels dated. But also 90's romcoms generally didn't age well.

    I’ve actually heard the women shouldn’t move their legs thing several times, including once as advice TO swing your leg when around a man you’re interested in because it will attract attention and make them think about you sexually. I think I was fourteen at the time when an adult woman coworker gave me that advice.
    So I can see where Julia’s ex’s mom decided bouncing knees were “unladylike” or whatever. So is having financial independence according to some people. I’ll be unladylike and thrive, thanks very much.

    Hey! I work in a hospital lab! Your piss goes into a fridge that is temperature monitored 3 different ways and after 7 days we get to take our racks and racks of piss and one by one dump them into the designated piss sink. It's um... fragrant... they're kept for 7 days just in case the doctor / provider wants us to run additional testing, that way the patient doesn't have to give us more piss

    Julia and Jacob’s Clara stories are the absolute best. They’re so sweet and it’s always so obvious how invested in and excited about this wonderful, strange child and all the little things she does, they are.
    Like, I feel the same way about the stories my teacher friend tells me about one of her kids who’s hyperfixation is Catholic Mass. These kids are just so weird and good and I love hearing about their antics from the adults that care for them, idk.
