Thanks for watching!
I have found my Euphyllia close up a bit when my Calcium and or magnesium go low. With low Alk I'm guessing the Calcium was low in turn. I hope you get it straighten out! Nice Tank, great channel!
My frog did the same thing when I added fusion 1 and 2 to my tank….the only coral to react negatively. I did2 water changes (10 percent) in a 5 day period and now it’s looking great!
I'm going to step up my water change game!
I like how you kept the tank simple, not to many gadgets or upgrades..
I have to in order to keep up with it!
I always see people over complicate the fish tank
Yep continue your weekly water changes. I have a same tank. It will & does make a difference. 👍🏾
I hope so!
@@TheFishTankGuy i dont think weekly water changes are good for this tank, i see people say that all the time and all its done was cause me more problems. let the tank run its only got like 10 gal after everything. these people saying oh do a 20% change each week thats still way too much man.
I would never disturb the sand bed, and I have best luck doing water change maybe every 6 months.
Looks like lots of large vermatid snails near and around the frogspawn that will irritate them as well, they look large enough to break off and remove from the tank
From running a simillar setup i had some good results in adding a nano tunze skimmer, lights were brighter with the fluval marine 3, and it still felt only enough par for lps. I believe your low on par so i would move the torches a bit higher and goto 30÷ water changes once every two weeks or 20÷ every week or so. And empty the tank once a year for a good sandbed clean. Stuff builds up fast and thats where it spirals out of control from doing okisch to real bad in only a few weeks.
You are right...my tank did really well for a long time, however, as a result, I started to get lazy with my water changes. Although I would still do them, the time between kept getting longer and longer...eventually it caught up with me.
I've lost a few torches in my fluval as well. I monitor the magnesium & alkalinity religiously now.
Monitor those levels along with your weekly water changes & see if that helps over the next few months.
Pay attention to your temp. as well. (I believe high nitrates also harm torches over the long term.)
Consistency is king.
PS those hanna Alk. checkers are really easy to use & are worth the extra buck
Love the videos, I’m struggling with my evo 13.5, had it up for a year and algae issues and quality issues overall, I’ve tried a bit of everything
- gems will be next to add, could we get a video specifically showing what you have in each chamber basket set up, filter floss, what’s in the bags etc and in which chamber , how bout an email address to ask questions?
Sure, I would be happy to try and help. I have my own struggles with the EVO currently so you are not alone! Bbestvin@gmail.com
high mag is always a plus for eupyhilia. I like mine at 1500
raise your mag to at least 1500 trust me. they love High MAG.
I'm going to give this a shot...
True. Higher Magnesium levels will help buffer your alkalinity and calcium swings, as those two will "fight" with each other if your Mg. is too low. Just don't go crazy adding too much. Magnesium levels over 2000 ppm can kill off your fish. But that's a crazy high amount. Be sure to test levels if you add a Mag. supplement.
Looks like there may be a bit too much flow? Since you don't have a variation in flow, the torch could be pounded constantly with flow.. Just a thought🙂
I haven't made any changes to flow since the very beginning, but I'll try to back it off a bit!
I would check the calcium level, and track that, which directly affects your alkanaity. with torches once they shrink its very hard to save them - literally. did you increase your light Par suddenyl as well ?
Thanks for the advice. Everytime I check calcium the levels seem to be good, but I will check again. I think inconsistent water changes screwed me. No other changes to lighting or flow...
Lights flow
I've found my flival evo 13.5 to be a very touchy aquarium, it's too small. Instable, it's hard to get corals to grow properly in small tanks if you've got too many fish ( my situation)
Even with a smaller number of fish, I typically had 2, 3 at most, you have to really diligent about maintenance. If you aren't, it WILL go downhill.
Are ypu using r/o water .im not a fan of reef crystal but when you mix youre salt is below 8.0 do you properly dissolved the salt mix . You should be doing smaller water changes every day like 2 cups since a small tank . Put some crush coral in youre media basket .possible change you salt mix
The light is not enough I have the same and most of the corals I had were dying you got to change your light or they’ll keep dying
To much flow same thing happened to mine I moved it to a lower flow area and it sorted it right out. Also have you raised your mag they like higher mag levels
I haven't made any changes to flow in quite some time, which is why this is so confusing. I will try to adjust a bit though, thanks for the advice!
just saying parameters are ok, doesnt mean they're ok. always good for us to see what your numbers are to really help. Fuzzy stick is a Birds Nest (seriatopora). No, duncans arent eyphyllia ;)
hi what filter pads is that?
I own torch corals. They are one of the more delicate SPS corals out there, even more than Frog Spawn or even Hammer Corals. I think you answered your own question. Alkalinity shifts (or any drastic spike in water parameters) will kill off heads, if not the entire coral in itself. You mentioned you don't test Alkalinity, and you really should. Here's why: Reef Crystals ( I use them myself) have a really high alkalinity of 12.5 dKh. So the problem with that, is that if your tank is running a low dKh, say 7.0 and you do even a moderate water change of 35%, you are shooting your dKh from 7.0 to 9.0 or more and that can stress your corals out to the point of losing more sensitive species. That is the big downside of Reef Crystals. If you are going to use it, be sure your parameters are close if you plan to do a decent size water change. Unfortunately, in a small tank like the Evo you own, they are much more difficult to keep corals in vs. a large tank. You probably have less than 10 gallons of actual water in the tank, so even taking out 3 gallons, can be a big swing in water parameters to your corals. I have more respect to someone that can keep a coral tank thriving in a tank that size, vs. a large one, you have to be more skilled at what you are doing, esp. if you are keeping LPS and SPS corals in it. Always think of corals like old people (like myself), they don't like change! lol. Sorry to babble on so long. Good luck!
Torches are not an SPS coral lol. they are LPS.
Magnesium! Low mag will do that, raise that to 1500-1800 and you'll see a big difference
Currently working on raising it up, but it helps to know there are others with that experience! Hoping it will help!
Your light looks white not blue. Did you change it out? Looks great
It may be set on a ramping timer, adjusting amount of blue and white light throughout the day…my tank is set to be blueish white, like daylight in the first part of the day, and progressively turns more blue, but also less intense throughout the rest of the day. He may have a similar setup, as many do.
Are these tanks good enough for pulsing Xenia? I want to keep it stock as I find when people add different lights and other equipment it looks incredibly tacky.
Should be yeah! Xenia is something of a weed. Be careful it doesn't overrun your tank if you do get it. Isolate on its own rock and it'll be more manageable!
@@XelsGirl I want it to overrun my tank lol. I did end up getting an AI prime though…
@@XelsGirl and a completely different tank.
Where to get the filter stack that you used? How do i search it?
Here it is...inTank media basket for chamber 1. amzn.to/422L1Z4
Alk is the only thing I test. And most corals hate a Alk swing, some just deal with it better
Have you thought about dosing All For Reef? That’s what I do.
How does All For Reef work? I'm sure I could look it up, but wondering how you use it? I want to avoid parameter chasing...
@@TheFishTankGuy All For Reef is balanced for Alk, Calc, Mag, and Trace Elements. So you just dose it based on just the AlK needs and it covers all the rest based off that balance.
I use it in my Fluval Evo and Waterbox 50.3. All you need is a single doser ( Bluetooth Kamoer is the best I have found for it ). My corals gave incredible growth and color. It has been a game changer.
Also has the effect of greatly reducing need for water changes if you Nitrates and Phosphates don’t get too high.
@@swordsman111982 I'm intrigued. A few more questions for you... So do you only test for alk? Either way, what test do you use for alk testing? Once you test, how often do you dose? Do you manually test for alk before dosing or do you get to a point where that thing will auto dose once a week etc?
@@TheFishTankGuy I test Alk, Nitrate, and Phosphate. Average about every 2 weeks. My tanks have both been up for over a year and are pretty well established. I use the Hanna Checkers for testing, 1000 times easier to use and better than guessing color changes.
To start dosing, I tested on Monday my Alk, the on Friday at the exact same time. I took the difference and divided it by 5. Figured that was my average element consumption for the tank. I then started to dose with All For Reef using the auto doser, dosing twice a day. I chose twice a day cause how small the amount is being dosed into the tank pushes the accuracy of the doser.
The testing time needs to be at least two hours after the dose cause of how All For Reef breaks down and adds Alk to the tank. I tested every other day till I got multiple test results that were with in .1 of each other.
I would suggest getting a doser for All For Reef, unless you can always manually dose the exact same time.
The cost is pretty cheap. I got the Kamoer Bluetooth model on sale, the All For Reef powder, a beaker, and a lab mixer for about $100. That allows me to make 6 liters of All For Reef, and my Fluval uses 3 ml a day. So it will last a long time.
Kevin, thanks for all of this information. I decided to purchase some All-For-Reef and give this method a try. I've been trying to keep up with weekly water changes and I'm finding that my ALK numbers are still dropping. I'm guessing I have too many corals in the tank for a weekly water change to be enough to replenish what's being used. I have one final question for you. Given the current state of my tank (ALK is around 5-6), should I raise ALK numbers to 8-9 BEFORE using All-For-Reef? I'm under the impression that All-For-Reef is used to maintain proper levels, not increase them. I've tried to watch some YT videos about it, and no offense to those videos, but man do they suck. Your explanation was better than anything I was able to find.
Infestation of aptasia will be a massive problem! !!!
I agree. I tried aiptasia x and Joe's juice... Neither seem to work!
@@TheFishTankGuy can you get pepper mint shrimps ? Or possibly loan a file fish from a reefing friend?
Berghia Nudibranch is a great choice if you can source one or two. Good luck with it 👍
Would u recommend 1-2 small fish in 13.5 gallons? Or am I asking for trouble
I have two clowns. 1 Benghai cardinal and a peppermint shrimp and all is fine. I won’t be adding any more fish
alkalinity is the most important parametrer by far for hard corals. theres really no need to test for anything else. just do a water change if things look unhappy. thats all you can do about high nutrients, so why even test?
It’s the spectrum of light need more blue & red light
Would you recommend this tank?
I like mine , had it a year . 2 clowns , coral cleanup . Lately a little washed out but still 80% thriving . upgrading my pump and flow
Is the tank better then the Biocube?
That's a great question. I think that in terms of build quality and functionality, this tank and the Biocube are pretty similar. However, I will say that I like the stock light in the Fluval EVO MUCH more than the stock LED light in the Biocube. They both get the job done, but I enjoy the look of the EVO more. It's tougher to maintain with the smaller volume though.
I will go with this one it’s my 1st salt water tank thanks!
I have one of these tank same Fluval Evo 13.5gallon it's the lighting it's hot and close the the water tap try rasing the lighting I've been there know I'm better at this hobby and my tank is doing 👍 👌 I'm on my second tank 😀
عالی برادر❤❤❤❤
Title is misleading about the tank.
Alc 9 plus and high mag plus 1400
