The Atari 7800 aesthetic is more my speed. It's nice that the CX78+ is getting re-released as a wireless variant. The new round of carts is interesting as well. I look forward to your future coverage of all the new goodies releasing later this year. 👍👍
A modern, HDMI version of the very console that got me into gaming to begin with. I will definitely be picking this up. I always regretted letting the one from my childhood go.
I love the original 2600 and never had a 7800... but I have to admit I find the look of this more appealing than the (timeless) 2600+. I always liked that later black/silver/rainbow aesthetic. its just brings back good memories of early 80s tech. I think thats why I'm still so fond of the gamestation pro.
Great video. I've been enjoying all of your content especially the rankings lists for the 2600. I'm hoping Atari releases wireless paddle controllers for the +platform. Pre-ordered the 7800+
46 years old, owned a 2600 as a kid in the 80s, knew about the 7800, and even watched the Atari documentary a few years ago...somehow, until today I missed the fact there was an Atari 5200.
I don't think I'll be getting this since the 2600+ already plays the games. BUT, It is cool and I hope people pick it up, I want the company to do well!
This is my favorite console, hands-down. Not because it was the most powerful, or that it had the best suite of games, surely not, but what it did have is character. And the parents liked the fact that I already had 100+ 2600 games already. The genesis of backward compatibility, I love it!
This looked very cool to me at first. But then I wondered what purpose it serves. As far as I can tell, the console itself doesn't do anything different from the 2600+. The only differences are the shell design, and what is included. I checked the page for the wireless CX40, and it says it uses a wireless dongle to connect, which would mean it will work wirelessly on even the original 1977 console. I think they should've made a dual-slot console that also supports 5200 cartridges in addition, so it wouldn't be redundant. Also, I'd like to see one that runs the games natively, rather than via software emulation. Maybe "system-on-a-chip" (like the Atari Flashback 2), or even that FPGA method people keep talking about. Still, credit where credit is due, and that's the cartridges. Bringing back old games, and new ones, that run on the original hardware. I wish Nintendo was doing this, too. It's a very cool idea.
It seems too similar to the 2600+ that it makes little difference to me which one to purchase if at all, so hopefully we'll learn more as we get closer to its physical release.
A new trackball would be cool. I think the 7800 will cut into 2600 sales since they are pretty much the same inside. I doubt they will come out with a 5200+, but who knows. The 400 mini already plays 5200 games, although not with original cartridges.
If you want to use a trackball on Xbox PlayStation and Nintendo you could buy one of those DB9 to USB dongles and plug it into one of those systems and buy an original 2600 ambidextrous proline trackball and you should be able to play trackball games on it.
The 7800+ seems like more of the same. I most excited about the wireless controllers. I just wish I knew about them before buying two wired cx78+ controllers. Makes plunking down another $35 hard to do.
Ordered mine earlier. I'm also super happy with the new carts on sale. One that is (understandably) overlooked is the 2600 Realsports collection. For $30 it's a great deal.
Somewhere in a box either inside my parents house or a shed lies my original 2600 and 7800. I've asked my dad to try to find it but the best he could do was the 2 7800 controllers. I've been using them with my 2600+, but I will most likely be picking up the 7200+ if just for the aesthetic. As I've said elsewhere, it wasn't my first console, but the first of the Console wars. I still maintain that the nostaligia with the 2600 is more directly the games and indirectly the 2600, whereas the 7800 it's about the console itself. That defined you as an "Atari Guy" (or gal) over Intellivision/colecovision/etc.
@@JustinEmlay Because it was actually a great console at its core with beautiful games. It flipped because 1) It’s outrageous size and, 2) faulty controller design. Both issues can be solved with today’s technology. Given a proper chance that console could soar again. …and the 7800 was pretty much a flop, as well, because it was released in the U.S. too late and with an inferior controller to its main competition, solved in Europe.
@@SumDumGy No it wasn't. Extremely bad controller, no backward compatibility and very little support. It was by far the worst selling console Atari ever put out. There is absolutely nothing the 5200 can do that the 7800 can't. With that said, it made little sense to release the 2600+. Should have just stuck with the 7800+ and left it at that since the 7800 was backwards compatible.
My main concerns are 1. The latency issues with the gamestation Pros wireless controllers dont carry over to the 7800. 2. Compatibility issues with certain legacy games, and homebrews.
Same thoughts as others Jon If the wireless CX-78 works on my 2600+ , I'd do that and a few games. But unless the guts of this are beefed up beyond the 2600+ seems kind of useless. I'm still waiting for word of the full firmware update. And someone to do a better tutorial on exactly how to do that, so I can play my 7800 Rampage. As usual, excellent video!!!!!
Everything will work on the 2600+, and I already have one of those, but I pre-ordered a 7800+ anyway even though I don't need one. The games are great, and as someone who lives in Europe, it's going to be cool to not have to pay shipping fees to get indie games here. Bounty Bob is a significantly enhanced 7800 port of the 5200 game; a new 7800 game in 2024 from ATARI. Crystal Quest, Bezerk and Frenzy (I like that they're separate personally), and Caverns Of Mars (2600) have all been pre-ordered. I like that ATARI has included Crystal Quest as a pack-in for the 7800+, and I think that it will help to shift a lot of units for ATARI.
The Atari 7800 had so much potential to even have done better with the games they created. It was actually a incredible gaming device that suffered a few things that they should of knowing better. But the few games they had were excellent for its time. I will dig in to see what they have done and will probably purchase! I always have thought even the name Atari was a excellent name they came up with! Very cool!
One of the problems with the 5200 is the controller is not fondly remembered in general, even if not considering the durability concerns of the original controllers. If they skip to the Jaguar, the controller is well suitable to play most 5200 games so it seems like a better idea to skip and later down the line release a Jaguar+ with a 5200 adapter and sell reissue 5200 controllers compatible with it separately
I’m looking forward to the wireless CX78+, because I’m not sure if I prefer it or the wired version. What I know is that the joystick I’d really want is the two-button version of the Konix Speedking with autofire. Too bad it cannot be bought anymore, I can only find the version with NES ports. Back in the day I had the 1-button version and it was my favourite joystick.
Although very similar to the 2600+, I am really happy to see 7800 getting some love. This was my first console growing up and even though I probably will not purchase since I already have the aforementioned 2600+. I probably will be looking into the carts available since 7800 is a little harder to find and this expands the library of a system that was robbed of it's true potential too soon
Yes! Great news Jon! I also received the news via email from Atari, but unfortunately they don't ship to Europe, for the moment I can't pre-order... i'm very sorry for this...
Love this news thank you. Interested to hear how that gamepad plays with the games. Also looking forward to Intellivision updates down the road when Atari makes them available.
I tried out the CX-78+ wired when it came out earlier this year: ua-cam.com/video/64dHiDhw9G0/v-deo.html It's gotta just be a matter of time for an Intellivision+, right? 😁
I’d love to see a few cut scenes/levels/space stations you can dock with etc. in Bentley Bear and Asteroids respectively. Wherever it makes sense in these older games.
Look at that, you didn't need news stories for videos, but you got news stories for videos. Great breakdown. I'm wondering if we can use the wireless controllers with the 400 Mini or the VCS800!
I kind of wish they'd sell some sort of wireless dongle for the 2600+ for those that don't see that capability as enough to justify spending $130 on a whole other console. But, I'll probably buy a 7800+ anyway... I don't normally collect "modern" retro-inspired stuff but I'm starting to want to do that with the new Atari lineup, just because of how much care and attention to detail they're putting into these things. I want all those games too. We'll see how many I can afford at the time of release (or how many show up as Christmas presents!)
I know the whole point of these + consoles is to be able to play the actual carts on modern TV's in HD but they all don't work. I really wish they would add a card slot like the Retron 77 has. Collectors and die-hards are still going to buy old and new games to play on the + consoles so I don't think it would hurt these new consoles as far as sales goes.
This is definitely exciting but I actually brought an Atari 7800 at my local retro game store two days ago so I'm not sure if I'll get it or not. Iam very interested in the D pad and games coming for it. I would've definitely preferred an Atari 5200+
What I find interesting is that the 2600+ plays 2600 and 7800 cartridges through emulation. People are nostalgic for the shape and wood grain style of the 2600, but I know there are people who are nostalgic for the 7800 as well. It makes me wonder if this is a similar concept to the 2600+. Of course the appeal to the 7800+ is wireless connectivity which is great! I had to look back on the 2600+ specs to see if that was there since I don’t own one. My wife will be pleased since she’s such a fan of the Crystal Castles game that she’ll love this Crystal Quest as well. Of course there are other M Network games I would want a release for that I enjoy but playing Astroblast is amazing and 7 Real Sports games in one? Granted I’m not a sports video game player, but I’ll have fun with that one too!
I'm stoked about those wireless controllers! I use wireless for my retro setup, and I've been hoping for a while that with all these new hardware releases, Atari would eventually bring out wireless controllers. Now, its finally happening!
Can you imagine a 5200+ console with controllers that ACTUALLY work? Big opportunity to fix all the reliability issues that the 5200 conrollers are known for - They'd sell THOUSANDS of those controllers! Serious question though - aside from the wireless option, what does this bring to the table that the 2600+ didn't? Did I miss something? I can see this as an option for anyone interested who didn't buy a 2600+, but I can't see anyone double-dipping on this.
I honestly find the 7800 very fascinating, I never grew up with it though seeing what the community is able to pull off with the 7800 platform call me interested! Part of me hopes if its successful enough atari can fund new games through the community that take advantage of the hardware, would be far more interested in paying for new content and new titles then another berzerk re-release ( Though i would probably still buy berzerk anyway lol!)
This is really cool.....but I find it odd at the same time. I would have thought Atari might have cleaned up the 2600+ with an official firmware update before moving on to another console. Regardless, I'm glad to see so many new games being released. That's good stuff for sure.
@@GenXGrownUp Exactly. At the risk of being labeled a hater...or whatever, I'm not really inclined to buy anything until the update the 2600+, and believe me - that's not easy. I ordered the 2600+ on the day they announced it. Same with the 1st round of 7800 games. I've emailed them several times and get no answer. Maybe that'll change in the future. I guess we'll see. Take care Brother
@@seanyoungquist3130 I would suggest anyone order it from anyone other than atari. It took me almost a year to receive something I ordered even when the item said it was in stock.
I bet they don't bother with the 5200 because of the keypad controller. That beast has 19 buttons and an analog stick by my recollection. The analog stick is easy these days but your average XBOX style controller has 11 buttons, a Dpad and 2 analog sticks.
Do Champ games modern releases still not work on the 2600+? I preordered the big bundle this time (I didn't bite on the 2600+). I would like to think the purchase of AA is leading to this homebrew titles getting pretty official now! Nice to see Bob D's work getting out there more!
I always wanted a 7800, but never had one. (Jumped from 2600 to the NES.) So this excites me. I don't yet have a 2600+, so I'm torn whether to skip it and go straight to the 7800+, or get both. I still have my original Vader 2600 and it works.
Interesting news. For me personally, I'm not interested in the 7800 system as I own an original, and the 2600+. Im sure it's for people who want the 80s look (7800), although the wireless controllers could be cool, I just bought 2 7800 controllers that they just released...and they were a hassle to get here as it is, plus with all the games they just released that I also preordered last round. Possibly only interested in frenzy and berzerk this round. You are absolutely 100% correct when you said they are using their newly acquired acquisitions, as those home brews obviously came from the atariage buy.
I'll be getting the games for sure (if they are available outside the U.S) 7800+ I may pass on since I have the 2600+ and an original 7800. M-Network pack looks interesting but maybe they could have included a few more games as the original carts are still somewhat inexpensive. Epyx pack..... again have the original carts so I'll wait on it.
Excited by all this news..Most excited about those wireless controllers, what do you think the chances are that they will work with the Atari VCS via USB dongle? And yes I'm still enjoying the VCS
This is the first I have heard of the "Mega Bundle". And..... Pre-ordered. Also Subscribed. Thanks man!!! This will be my first Atari console since buying my Jaguar complete in box (with second controller and rare OEM S-Video cable) in April 2008. I now own roughly 40 of the 50 official released Jaguar games all complete in box. My god do I LOVE the Jaguar. Anyway, I have been wanting a 7800 for about two decades now, but never bought one. Support for modern displays, new games and controllers that work on original hardware..... I am fucking SOLD!!!! Take my money now (oh wait.... They did with my pre-order)!!!! And here I thought I was "done" collecting after I "completed" my console collection earlier this year, and then I bought a 3DS XL and now pre-ordered the 7800+. As Pacino said in Godfather, once I thought I was out, they pull me back in again..... *Proceeds to look up 2600 and 7800 game prices* Now give me a "modern" Lynx dammit!!!
Hello, and welcome, and your excitement is infectious! 😁 I'm still holding out hope for the Gamestation Go to satisfy my Lynx fix. It's got the right layout, now just make it happen!
@@GenXGrownUp Speaking of the GameStation Go, I believe you said the GSG has slightly more “power” then the GameStation Pro, have you heard anything about the GameStation Remix?
@@GenXGrownUp Hell yeah. Thanks man!! I have since gone back and pre-ordered an additional CX40 and CX78 controller, and ALL of the "launch" titles. My god, I am SO HYPED for the 7800+. Like I said, I LOVE the Jaguar TOO DEATH, but at the end of the day, I almost feel like it's just a cartridge based 3DO (not knocking on it, as I love my 3DO almost as much as the Jaguar). I LOVE the Jaguar, but when I think Atari, I immediately think 2600/5200/7800/Lynx. I have wanted a "true" Atari console for over two decades, and now it is finally happening with support for modern displays. To quote Reggie, my body is ready.
Too similar and I’m running low on space for similar units. I may consider it if can recognize advanced 2600 Champ Games, etc., better in house sound chip for future home brews or maybe next year when it is on sale. I am on board with a 5200+ that can recognize my AtariMax Multicart. I do appreciate all the new retro products though.
As a younger person who recently has gotten into Atari and have been playing the ps4 flashback classics, would it be wiser to purchase this 7800+ or the 2600+ of last year? I know you explained the differences in the video, which frankly aren't that many, but as a personal preference which would you purchase as a first time buyer?
Sucks they're sticking to homebrews. The last batch, I picked up Fatal Run because I already own Ninja Golf. I was hoping for more re-releases, maybe Mean 18 Golf, Alien Brigade, or Planet Smashers.
The Atari 7800 is getting a second chance, and I'm all for it. We saw a bit of that with Atari with the small selection of games and the historical context of the console as a competitor to the NES. Hopefully, with the 7800+, more people will show interest in the console's library of games.
I am interested in the wireless controllers more than anything. A trackball would be like the next thing i would really like to have. Can it play the Harmony cart by chance? I would love to know.
The 7800+ is going to be a tough sell though, as the amount of 7800 carts in the wild is a tiny fraction of 2600 carts available. A much smaller install base. Very cool nonetheless. How about an actual 2600 (not emulation) though? That would be great!

The Atari 7800 aesthetic is more my speed. It's nice that the CX78+ is getting re-released as a wireless variant. The new round of carts is interesting as well. I look forward to your future coverage of all the new goodies releasing later this year. 👍👍
I had an Atari as a kid and BLOWN AWAY that Atari is still around! Just ran across this vid and I'm in! Can't wait for this.
Wow, didn’t see this coming. Thanks for the update.
Pre-ordered the 7800+
I have my original Atari 2600 , 5200, and 7800 and I just got the 2600 plus I would love to see Atari Jaguar Plus
I was thinking the same thing; it seems like this is just the 2600+ with a new shell. Which is fine, but I don't think I need two of the same thing.
Completely unnecessary release - just to melk the cow?
I preordered and added Bounty Bob Strikes Back to the order! It’s gonna be a good winter!!
Good to see more homebrew games released. Just needs to keep working on compatibility.
This is my favorite console, hands-down. Not because it was the most powerful, or that it had the best suite of games, surely not, but what it did have is character. And the parents liked the fact that I already had 100+ 2600 games already. The genesis of backward compatibility, I love it!
"Rikki and Vikki" needs to be in the lineup too
Plus Popeye
@@rogerphillips642Popeye is a Nintendo IP I think.
I thought it didn't work on the plus
@@atarileaf it doesn't.
@@atarileaf If they can’t get these homebrews to work on the 7800+ then isn’t a 2600+ in a different case?
Please Atari get license again for Defender and Stargate and bring these beauties to the 7800+. Best news here is Bounty Bob....
you can just buy them lol
It seems too similar to the 2600+ that it makes little difference to me which one to purchase if at all, so hopefully we'll learn more as we get closer to its physical release.
Want so so much but PLEASE have a native release in Japan to avoid import duties😭
Certainly, we can hope for a Jaguar+ in the future.🤗
The 7800+ seems like more of the same. I most excited about the wireless controllers. I just wish I knew about them before buying two wired cx78+ controllers. Makes plunking down another $35 hard to do.
Ordered mine earlier. I'm also super happy with the new carts on sale. One that is (understandably) overlooked is the 2600 Realsports collection. For $30 it's a great deal.
Totally agree!
I hope the wireless controllers are compatible with the Atari Gamestation Pro, even wired. That would be an awesome experience.
1986 : wow 7800
2024 : wow 7800
nope
1986: wow 7800
2024: what? 7800… Where’s 5200?
@@SumDumGy The 5200 was a flop. Why would they make that?
I'd love to see an Atari Jaguar +
7800 ET port by HSW in 16 weeks! Now THAT would be a sweet xmas pack-in title!
LET'S GOOOOOO!
Awesome, Atari. ❤ I'm glad to see at least one game company actually cares about their history, as well as game preservation these days.
My main concerns are
1. The latency issues with the gamestation Pros wireless controllers dont carry over to the 7800.
2. Compatibility issues with certain legacy games, and homebrews.
You know what. I haven’t had any latency issues , knock on wood, with my GSP controllers.
Same thoughts as others Jon
If the wireless CX-78 works on my 2600+ , I'd do that and a few games. But unless the guts of this are beefed up beyond the 2600+ seems kind of useless. I'm still waiting for word of the full firmware update. And someone to do a better tutorial on exactly how to do that, so I can play my 7800 Rampage.
As usual, excellent video!!!!!
Looks like the new wireless controllers will work on the 2600+.
How did you pre-order one in Europe? Pre-ordering doesn’t work for me here in Sweden and I’ve seen others in the E.U. saying the same thing.
Very cool!
Wow! I've been waffling on buying one of these new Atari consoles. Now another to consider! May be leaning toward the 7800+.
It feels like this does everything the 2600+ does and more. Kind of a no-brainer if you don't care what the outside shell looks like. 😉
I hear you. I live in Greece.
It's getting a European release through the same retailers as the 2600+. It's been confirmed on the Atari Age forums.
I am in UK as well, have saved items to my wishlist on Amazon, as shows pic & info, but stating currently unavailable😢
@@BrettMoore-g8g Me too, the same. They write me the boundle will be available through Amazon, third quarter, in Europe 😢😭
Love this news thank you. Interested to hear how that gamepad plays with the games. Also looking forward to Intellivision updates down the road when Atari makes them available.
I tried out the CX-78+ wired when it came out earlier this year: ua-cam.com/video/64dHiDhw9G0/v-deo.html
It's gotta just be a matter of time for an Intellivision+, right? 😁
Can we pre-order from Canada this time?
In 40 years, we should be able to pre-order a Jaguar+
we need a Atari lynx remake
I’d love to see a few cut scenes/levels/space stations you can dock with etc. in Bentley Bear and Asteroids respectively.
Wherever it makes sense in these older games.
Thanks!
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching and for your kindness! 😁
Awesome! Now if only we could get a Jaguar+…
I was hoping for a 7800 Flashback for years, that’s how I got the Atari GPS.
I had the 7800 and I love this.
I’m curious if the latest Atari VCS wireless USB controllers are compatible with the dongle and/or wirelessly.
This is definitely exciting but I actually brought an Atari 7800 at my local retro game store two days ago so I'm not sure if I'll get it or not. Iam very interested in the D pad and games coming for it. I would've definitely preferred an Atari 5200+
Awesome stuff!! I'm very excited for the wireless controllers.
They should just remake 5200 games for the 7800+. Creating a 5200+ console I feel would be a waste of money.
Great video as always, thank you!
The controllers and games interest me.
This is really cool.....but I find it odd at the same time. I would have thought Atari might have cleaned up the 2600+ with an official firmware update before moving on to another console. Regardless, I'm glad to see so many new games being released. That's good stuff for sure.
We're in agreement. Odd that there's still no official FW for the 2600+ when this is essentially at 2600+ Mark II! 😁
Good luck in getting your order. I'm still waiting on orders from last year from Atari.
@@seanyoungquist3130 I would suggest anyone order it from anyone other than atari. It took me almost a year to receive something I ordered even when the item said it was in stock.
oof, sorry you have been waiting so long
I bet they don't bother with the 5200 because of the keypad controller.
I wasn't expecting a sequel to Crystal Castles! *I WANT IT IN A ROM!*
I'll be getting the games for sure (if they are available outside the U.S)
7800+ I may pass on since I have the 2600+ and an original 7800.
I've got a pretty good feeling about that working. The VCS plays pretty nicely with most generic USB controllers, so I like our odds.
*Proceeds to look up 2600 and 7800 game prices*
Now give me a "modern" Lynx dammit!!!
@@1968Steve Nothing I can report yet, but we should just be a few weeks away now.
@@GenXGrownUp thank you for your response
I do appreciate all the new retro products though.
i think thats awesome!!!really excited ...bounty bob strikes back!! plus all the others fantastic!i i guess they didnt do the 5200 ?
This very ambitious. I hope not too many of us old guys will die and destroy the market!
Lots of good info here. Love the impromptu/unscripted stuff. Call me crazy but I like sports games, so the Real Sports cart is up my alley.
The RealSports line isn't all hits, but having them all together IS a hit!
I enjoy the 7800 enclosure more than the 2600. Can’t wait to rock one in my living room.
Just get the one that you like the best. I grew up with a 7800 , so I’m getting that.
I might buy the CX78+ controller to play platformer games and Atari50 on my PC.
Also, did Atari finally acquired the Epyx game catalog?
The wireless CX78+ also resolves the abysmal placement of the original controller's wire being in the upper right instead of centered
Adding wireless is a great feature. Sadly, they still do not sell through Amazon Brazil yet 😞
We need the 5200+ and I can’t wait for the 7800+ I’ve my 2600+ not played it yet though but once I complete my collection then I can test them out.
