  • On March 16-17, 2015, Chatham House, Stanford University, and the U.S. Institute of Peace convened a meeting at USIP’s Washington headquarters, drawing together representatives from government, military, academia, consulting firms, non-governmental organizations, and think-tanks to look back critically at 13 years of the international community’s experience in Afghanistan.
The purpose of the Conference on State-Strengthening in Afghanistan 2001-2014: Learning from the Past to Inform the Future was to identify practical lessons for future support to Afghanistan, as it moves forward with a new government and a reduced international presence, as well as for other potential future interventions elsewhere in the world.
Keynote speeches were made by Ambassador James Dobbins, Dr. Barnett Rubin, and Dr. Thomas Barfield, along with a moderated discussion with Ambassador Karl W. Eikenberry and Dr. Ali Jalali. Additional summaries and assessments based on these and other panels during the conference will be published at a later date.

I am a huge fan of Thomas Barfield. I read his book prior to deploying to Afghanistan in 2009, and am grateful for what I have learned from him. That being said, as a vet, it made me cringe he talked about the Marines, and "the regular guys". Damn, that one pierced deep.

Going to Afghanistan was a right decision but fighting terrorism in Afghanistan was a mistake because terrorist was keep coming from Pakistan…..

So what's happening now with the US leaving ... can the Taliban push everyone around or will the local non Pastun tolerate this.

The local non Pashtun stands against Taliban where they have guns and ammunition’s but for majority of Afghanistan local to fight a Pakistan backed terrorist with 80 billions dollars worth of military gears needs a strong logistics and financial back that local doesn’t have that for now so far.

@@stihlnz T-ban can bring security and stability. Now they need to build a more inclusive system (already appointed a hazara in the cabinet) and stabilise the economy. T-ban knows how to manage rural areas. No one can stand against their rule and pose a threat. I am only concerned about economic problems that have arisen due to sanctions. They are the natural leaders of Afghanistan.
They claim Islam which is a unifying factor with all Afghans.

@@baheer156 Islam OBVIOUSLY does not unify Afghanistan. Afghanistan should be the most peaceful country in the world LOL Taliban and their Pakistani cousins will never bring peace, and we all know that. They are definitely not Muslim, that is an insult to true Muslims.
