I almost can’t listen to “Standing in the yard/dressed like a kid/the house is white and the lawn is dead.” That’s the half return. As Bob Dylan said, “You can always come back, but you can’t come back all the way.”
Literally listening to that album now, and was on THAT song (def one of my faves) and had to come to YT to look for vids I havent seen yet and this gem just came in.
everytime i see Big Thief live i just sob a bunch. (never seen adrienne lenker solo). but the softness of the crush to these lyrics is right... wah ;-(
I am fairly vacant & hearing how deeply she experiences a moment & treasures each detail really shakes me. I can greater detect the gap between my line of existence and her's-not only in the distance between our varied environments but in the depth of one's perception & ability to experience. I have a long road ahead of me if I ever would want to live in the intimate coupled memories she so gracefully depicts through her songs. Her attitude could bring a withering soul back to fullness
7:18 anything 17:24 zombie girl 34:25 half return 47:17 forward beckon rebound For those who have already watched the whole thing (interview is excellent, really deep) and just want the songs again.
Yes Adrianne, spend time with your grandparents, give them love and ask lots of questions to find out about their lives. Now that all my grandparents are gone I’m always thinking of things I wish I could ask and hugs I wish I could give. Thank you for all your beautiful music!!!
Adrianne is awesome and inspirational. I feel she is so strong and fragile at the same time. She also seems to be connected to the universe, if that makes sense. So moving.
Ok I'd never heard of her. I saw a video and I clicked. Wow. She moved me on the first time hearing her. This interview explains everything! lol She has a deep deep soul. And I felt it immediately.
What an incredibly thoughtful, curious, and brave human. Feeling lots of gratitude for Adrianne and her sharing her wisdom from beyond the folds of space/time. And big ups to my homie Ged for facing his own shadow self.
There is something so pure and authentic in witnessing someone explore their bliss and share it with the world. Adrianne makes it so accessible too. Thank you for this, so many of us need it right now. 💓
I've always liked Adrianne Lenker but I didn't listen to this album for awhile. I finally started listening a month ago while quarantining in a new country. All alone for two weeks, just me and this album. It felt like a warm hug. Or being half awake on a warm, summer day.
KEXP FOR LIFE!! I'M GOING TO WRITE THOS IN ALL CAPS JUST TO GET MY POINT THROUGH. WATCHING THESE VIDEOS HAVE KEPT ME GOING THROUGH THESE TOUGH TIMES AND I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE HARD WORK! THESE AWESOME ARTISTS HAVE BROUGHT MY WIFE AMD I GREAT JOY THROUGH THESE HARD TIMES. PLEASE KEEP UP THE HARD WORK. P.S I'VE SEEN EVERYTHING ACCEPT LAURA LOVE HERE, SHE IS A 100% NEEDED ON THE AT HOME. I KNOW Y'ALL KNOW WHO SHE IS!
Beautiful music. I will admit, never took the time to get into Big Thief, but picked up this solo album after hearing the opening track once, and was really taken with everything about it♥
So much appreciation of Adrianne for making songs and instrumentals, its a beautiful collection that I really love for both records. Please don't ever stop doing what you do Adrianne! I'll be there the next time your in the UK touring
In an era where 3 min songs about WAP dominate the airwaves She is truly a unique and exceptional songwriter and performer. Call me old school but I like when my music is written and performed by a musician.
Oh my goodness! The story behind zombie girl is crazy! I love the way she described it. Great story teller, and very scary experience wow also it's so cool that her grandmother made the water colored album art for those. I love water color painting, especially more minimal ones and landscapes and faces. I should learn that
It must be exhausting to have such a creative & curious mind. Mine is nowhere near as adventurous or questioning as Adrianne's, but I find her musings extraordinary & absorbing. There are very few people who can hold my attention as she does & the music that she creates is just breathtaking...literally.
omg i didn't realize there was this with the interview!!!!! I wrote a comment on just the performance video wishing there was this and I'M BEYOND STOKED!! TY KEXP AND ADRIANNE!
I enjoyed the music and the interview part. She's a talented musician and I know her band by name only. She's really good and I like her strong bond with her family, and love that she's going to hang out with her grandparents.
Yeah, they must all be as lovely as her. Being surrounded by open-hearted people surely powers her art. When I'm with my family it's isolating. I suppose that can also fuel artistry too but not as warm
I knew it wasn't a coincidence that I was reading Earthsea and was drawn to Big Thief!! I can see it on the new album, which is fantastic. I'm so excited to see them in April!!!
Hi Morgan! I love your refrigerator coverings!! And blown away by the fabulous Adrianne, so happy to be introduced to her music and person. Thanks for this great KEXP session.
this interview was so pure and deep. truly one of the greatest musicians/lyricists in this lifetime. also pretty cool how she was able to meet up with old friends and meet new people throughout the past year. how she narrated those bits felt dreamy for some reason (reason being it's been a year since weve been in lockdown lol)
Thank you DJ Morgan and Adrianne for the heartspace and the illuminating conversation. Best thing I've heard in a long while! We are becoming more conscious and it is always a good reminder to breathe into it again.
Never really understood the hype around Bridgers. Her guitar playing is very elemental and seems that this hype is more industry pushed than anything. Plus her vocal delivery/dynamics is the absolute same. Lenker in the other hand actually knows how to play guitar, by doing multiple different tunings and can actually fingerpick! She studied at the prestigious Berkeley school of music.
@@joed7185 maybe bridgers is more easily digestible but i actually don’t listen to much bridgers personally. i’m a huge fan of lenker and agree she’s a superb guitar player but it’s just not fair to pit women against each other. they make very different music. we can be a fan of one without having to put another down.
28:44 "don't look at darkness as negative" My friends are worried when I write dark fairy tales and create dark videos. But I feel like it inspires my creativity. Feel like it pushes me out of my own body. She is very inspiring.
Maybe they all must sacrifice a part of their whole self in order to collaborate cohesively. The trade off is a greater collective array of ability & personality. Compared to a solo act, she is shining at her brightest as a sun with no blocked rays or interference of any sort.
I liked that part of the video. I never would've been able to detect that but seems like a special experience to listen to music that way. It makes me want to borrow someone's vinyl player (?). I am probably putting her recording efforts to poor use by only listening to her music through a blasted phone speaker lol
how can anyone
not fall in love with her
Ditto
I almost can’t listen to “Standing in the yard/dressed like a kid/the house is white and the lawn is dead.” That’s the half return. As Bob Dylan said, “You can always come back, but you can’t come back all the way.”

Thank you soooo much Nils. This time break down is great.
You’re amazing for doing this 🙏🏼 thank you. I wanted to hear her talk about how she imagined “instrumentals” as a medicine again
a wholly exceptional singer with the heart of a poet and the voice of a siren, unbelievably awesome, thank you KEXP.

Her intention to have the instrumental album be a tool that goes in the medicine cabinet was not lost on me. It brings me so much peace.
Her latest album is the best thing that ever happened in 2020.
totally agree! haha hi raleigh
She was already one of my favorite musicians; now she's one of my favorite philosophers. What a tremendous interview, Morgan.
I had the exact same thought before I even saw your comment!
I’m so glad someone else feels this way
Her work is so innocent, something that isn’t tainted by society or other influences. She’s herself and that’s what makes her music so unique
I'm getting better. Now instead of ugly crying, I only teared up during Anything.

so amazing that she recorded organically, with no computer... such an absolute inspiration I LOVE her
What an incredibly thoughtful, curious, and brave human. Feeling lots of gratitude for Adrianne and her sharing her wisdom from beyond the folds of space/time. And big ups to my homie Ged for facing his own shadow self.
Her dream made me think of Ged too!
She filled my emptiness for a few minutes when she told about her dreams
is this a lyric lol
That sounds awful!
Your emptiness is a fullness of itself representing how you have blown through this world

she has such a warm energy 🥺
Thank you DJ Morgan for this beautiful interview with Adrianne. She's an incredible songwriter and soul.
Adrianne seems is a magical prodigious and wonderful artist.
her sensibility and her concept of beauty are something praiseworthy
Her voice is like crystal; it's unbelievably beautiful.✨
she sounds like i feel after doing an intense breathwork session and speaking w the group. a true artist and a gift. thank u AL

okay but that dream sequence... i will never look at zombie girl the same way lol

You rock Adrianne 🙏
In these times she looks perfect.
my god, what a lovely human
Why have I watched this 3 times this week
Me shouting at my computer: "CONVENT! IT'S A CONVENT!"
What a lovely performance, lovely interview, lovely artist. 💗

Timestamps for every song and part of the interview would be awesome!
yeah where is that person ? haha
Forget Phoebe Bridges, Adrienne Lenker is the best indie solo female act out there. Her guitar skills are the best and her voice is great.
let’s celebrate both!
why not both??
You can

she makes me feel empathy
lovely
She enjoys nature. Hope she can get out and explore beautiful Sabino Canyon and Mt. Lemmon :)
is that a D28 cutaway in the first song , it sounds and looks so beautiful, Thanks for sharing this video it hits home base, So Peace !
Always think of her when I in Joshua Tree...and listen to her more for some reason...Courtney Barnett also
Musician or philosopher? Wow
I fucking love her!

just wow.
Adrianne has crazy smart eyes.
Fractal freak
why are we not talking about how scary that dream was
Being from Oklahoma, I really resonated with that whole trailer park thing. Loved this 🎉
Hearing Norah Jones cover Big Thief is fucking chef's kiss
Great interview - played this album 100x. Not to slight Big Thief but this solo effort captures a spirit BT is missing sometimes.
Maybe they all must sacrifice a part of their whole self in order to collaborate cohesively. The trade off is a greater collective array of ability & personality.

i wonder if the Phil from Brooklyn she mentions that helps her get tape analog machines up is phil elverum??
Was thinking same thing but doubt Phil was in Brooklyn at the time
Her haircut is 🔥
half return kicks so much ass
she reminds me of a female elliott smith. i love her gentle approach to life :))
Perfeita
how do i get steve fisher's (sp?) music? if she says he's legendary and her favorite songwriter i MUST hear it
Analog means ambience and resonance
I liked that part of the video. I never would've been able to detect that but seems like a special experience to listen to music that way. It makes me want to borrow someone's vinyl player (?).
