Heather Thomas teaches you how to paint Venice lace. She recommends using ink, specifically Dr Ph. Martins, opposed to paint because it isn't as hard. Also, she uses analogous colors to make them blend better. Lastly, Heather prefers Japanese paint brushes called sumi brushes.

Great tutorial. Thank you so much for explaining WHY you use the products you do and why you use the techniques you do. It really helps to know theory and reasoning!

Is the dye permanent? Should you wash the lace after a certain time period so that it doesn't bleed out on clothes when it gets wet?

Hi, the ink she uses in this tutorial becomes permanent after it is set with heat. If you are using a different brand of ink or a due you will need to check on the label to see whether it is permanent on fabric or not. It should also give you washing instructions, however if it does not I would recommend test washing a small sample piece and /or wasting it in a product called Synthrapol.

can you please tell make this paint to become permanent on my fabric? I want to apply it on some lace I have sewed on a dress but I want to make sure the color will be permanent so it won't blend into the fabric of the dress when I wash it. Thank you

I you use Tsukineko inks or Jaquard Dyenaflow, the process is the same.
Simply heat set it with a hot, steam iron once the paint/ink is dry.
Keep the iron on the lace for a good 30 seconds per section of lace.
Move the iron in small circles as you count to 30 to keep it from
      scortching.

Dr. Martin craft ink was discontinued on 2016. I can not locate it anywhere. Disappointment....(Oct 2018)

Hello, I know you use ink here, can this be done with the dye you make in another video? Thanks, Michael.

Hello Michael, Yes, as long as the lace is a natural fiber; rayon or cotton or silk. Then you can use the Procion dyes that I've used in fabric dyeing videos.
