I have always understood it that with the strings putting a lot of tension pulling the neck one way, the truss rod is adjusted to counter that bringing the neck into alignment. Measuring the flatness of a neck should be done with strings on and tuned. Then adjust the the truss only a quarter turn at a time. It's a balancing act between the truss and the strings.
Been there and done that. Got the blue sparkle one. Frets were really good considering but a good 3 way 3 pickup switch and 3 super distortions with chrome top bobbins and good pots and 280 bucks turns into 800.00 bucks. But it's now wanted by many who have played it. But they would never even offer what I have in the pups,so make it as good as you can cause you're stuck with it.
I bought one of these from a friend of mine. It was actually built pretty good but everything else was shit. Gave him $100 and rebuilt it. Now it plays great...only took a total re-wire and $400 in parts. Makes a good home recording guitar.
As far as i know Ace has said multiple times the middle pup was never wired in. Also i have met Gilby Clarke at his 50th birthday after party and did a impromptu interview which was never published. He also said Ace didnt have the middle pup wred up himself being a big Ace fan. Just my 2 cents
Right, only the bridge pickup functions as a pickup. The Neck pickup is the removable door that lets the smoke out, and the volume or tone turns on the burner that ignites the smoke bomb.
Correct. The toggle thus acted as a kill-switch. The _Standard,_ had just two humbuckers, but still had a kill-switch. The neck pickup set-off the smoke-bomb when pressed-in. Same in the case of the three-humbucker, _Custom_ configuration, which just had a dead pickup.
HOORAY and all praise to you sir, you are the first northern American who has pronounced the word "soldering" correctly. My world is now as it should be.

One of your best videos,Dave.Thank you a million for making this so clear for us. Man,in ten years Gibson will be out of business.the copies will be 5x better. And besides, what 'music' that I hear on the radio would give a damn if you showed up with a Chibson?
I bought one 2 years ago for $250US , took 7 days to come which was awesome, I gotta say its up there with an epiphone in regards to quality, it stays in tune, with a fret job, p90 humbuckers and maybe Jimmy page wiring kit it'll work, it'll be like a Frankenstein guitar
The tighter the truss-rod, the more the neck will resist the tension of the strings. That's the simplest way to think of it. If you're using lighter-gauge stings, loosen the nut atop the truss-rod. Double-action truss-rods are different, yet similar. If you're unsure about you double-action, take it in, or watch a few videos on how it works.
As someone with 30 years of woodworking experience, plywood is way stronger than hotdog wood (mdf or osb). It also doesn't kill the sound nearly as much.
carl suiter - I'm picturing laminated strips of wood that resemble a pack of wieners. It's very hard to tell from the crappy router cavity it the body back is plywood. Could just be a terrible router bit. ** edit- the pickup cavity routes look different, seem to have been routed with different bits. If the wood ply accounted for how the routes looked, then all the routes should look like the control cavity route.
Ace Frehley? Lol. I wonder if those Chibson guys could do me a copy of that famous strat used by Eric Shipton from Derek & the Donkeydick's? I love their song Layla. Dave you're a legend. Keep it up lad. ;) Chibson's...whats the point? Lol. Buy an Epiphone instead.
Hey Dave I got one of these aces , my gf got it for me cause I said it looked cool one night when she was looking at guitars with me and she didn't know who ace was so I had to school her, anywho,. I checked it out when I swapped my pups and it is a monogamy body with and actual maple cap , I was stunned but pleased!!!!! Go figure!
Davey, when making that brass plate, notice that the routing in the cavity does *not* have a square edge on the bottom. It is rounded, so if you make a template based on the top outline, it wont sit flat on the bottom. Perhaps using shielding tape would be a lot less headache? Looking forward to Part 2! Thanks mate.
Well you get what you pay for. Most are like $300 USD delivered, that’s pretty fair deal and to think they get the neck angle right and most $3000 Gibson’s don’t. A lot of the Chibson dealers are now using real flamed maple tops and I piece Mahogany bodies and send you pictures of the whole process of it getting built. Although those are around $400 you can’t beat that deal. They’ll even put your own custom logo. That’s what cheap labor gets you, lol
That's somewhere around three hundred-odd dollars of pickups in a 150 dollar guitar. I upgraded the three pickups in my Les Paul Epiphone Black Beauty, but that was a really solidly built guitar, which this certainly is not, so I don't see why you'd put that much money into a Chinese nightmare build.
Sweet toof - yes and no. You can buy this to stick on a wall just like you could buy a fake Frankie or a fake bootleg Gibson logo tee shirt. For that you don't need a guitar that plays really well, and the real item it might be wasted on the owner. I really expect a genuine Gibson AF Sig would be a 100% better guitar. So this only sort of infringes on the sales of real Sig models, if they are still even available. Counterfeits tend to fill a vacuum, and people tend to know
There's a whole story about these guitars not really 300 made dimazio couldn't fill the order for super distortion pups . So many came with the wrong pups!!
I know that is "the Gibson" way to wire a 3 pickup but personally I never got that way. It's so inefficient. I'd go like the Epiphone or Peter Frampton way. Have the middle always on but via a vol pot, either sacrifice one tone and go master tone three vol or have bridge and neck through one pair of vol tone and middle through other (I believe that is Frampton wiring). Then you can wind middle out and just like a 2 pick up or dial it in in any of three positions. Just my thoughts makes much more versatile guitar and you don't need special switch.
If you're buying a $300 Chinese copy to put in work and parts that exceed the value of the guitar by at the very least double, you gotta really question what you're doing with your life.
Looks like if you removed the two screws holding the switch together, you could vertically invert the right half of the switch and after re-assembly the switch would identically match what's shown on the wiring diagram.
So everyone's knocking a Chinese guitar for being junk but your forgetting it's a copy of a junk guitar! How many Gibson's has Dave moaned about for being set up badly, even new ones. There's a reason they are going bust! lol
I'd MUCH rather have an LTD Eclipse (I have an EC-256 with Hipshot tuners, Schaller bridge, and DiMarzios...the 256/400/1000 differences are in the hardware and electronics, and some cosmetics). They play just as good and cost about half the price (or about equal to an Epihone).
Dave Hughes - it's still different. Gibson still makes enough good guitars that they can maintain a loyal consumer base. You can be picky buying a new Gibson, then deal with the usual one or two issues per instrument Gibson is lazy about but then enjoy a very nice guitar for many years. Not cheaply but then Gibson don't try to be a cheap brand. And resale is generally high. Chinese black market companies definitely aren't Gibson in any of the above aspects. You have no idea what the hell a black market guitar maker will put in each guitar. It will likely be a pain to own and set up. But China seem to be getting better, and with the right materials and resources a properly-run factory in China could make fairly accurate 59 Burst clones with proper woods and specs. Would you pay 3 to 4 times as much the black market for one of those 'accurate' clones, that's the question. High risk and low resale. But maybe an amazing guitar for $600. That question may become reality soon.
Oh well, I guess it is original in the fact that the original Budokans were wired wrong and were supposed to come with super distortions but 80% shipped with their usual 49whatevers .. I wouldnt work on it personally
What do you want for $250? I own one and would have killed for one when I was 15 (a loooooong time ago)...needed a new nut and locking Grovers...and a lot of gain!!!!
Ace Frehley used a DiMarzio Super Distortion in bridge and never was known to use neck or middle pick up, Punky Meadows actually kicked his ass guitar playing in Japan when Angel toured Japan with KISS, Ace is OK but Punky fuckin rules, HA HA HA
This guitar sells for $300 new. Put on dimarzios,,,adjust like this. And you got a good guitar. Better than spending $3000 on a "real " lespaul and finding gibson quality control issues
Oh shit, they put a Gibson logo on that p.o.s..........guys, please understand that the true test of a guitar is the rigors of the road. Every dude I know that plays one normally on tour, has to have it be extensively fucked with. Gibson hasnt made a decent les Paul since the 80's,(and that's still a stretch) so, please don't stand in front of your 3000$ purchase and demand folks think it was a good choice. It wasn't.
sad part is it will prob play well look and prob sound the part...but yet when someone asks nice guitar... he has to say it's fake...and worth almost nothing so hope he or she keeps it cause there is no value there.
Did Paul “Ace” Frehley sign off and / or make $$ from these? I’m curious about that relative to the shit everyone is talking. (Creator included) His likeness is on it so Kiss legal would be having a field day on someone in China. No one escapes KISS legal.
C'mon Dave, stop holding out. Your pick stash is in the same place as mine and you know it. Couch cushions and the bottom of the clothes dryer. You have way more picks than you think you do. LOL!
Don't FIX these damn things, David! We're counting on you to provide wise counsel on matters Luthieris Guitarus Ethicus! Explain the situation to your customers ~ If they're good guys, they will understand!
That is exactly the way I learned it, that is the way I do it, and I will continue to do it that way. 1/4 turn, and then wait...
Been there and done that. Got the blue sparkle one. Frets were really good considering but a good 3 way 3 pickup switch and 3 super distortions with chrome top bobbins and good pots and 280 bucks turns into 800.00 bucks. Gary Heighway - not a bad deal. And also not too valuable to display as wall art!
Gibson doesn’t crack down on these because they make big money selling parts to people who buy this firewood.
Sad part is that it's still a quarter of the price of one of their guitars.
The parts are not an exact fit. Every Chinese knockoff I've seen has had to have an obvious mod made to accept the quality parts
Firewood guitars😂
Bet you cry about Chinese watches too.
Ace is back and he told you so🎵
Ace's guitar middle pickup was just a faker but it looks way better with 3
The state of those pickup rings. They're up and down like a bride's nightie.
Good one.
Simple sand job if the rings
Interesting analogy.

Right, only the bridge pickup functions as a pickup. The Neck pickup is the removable door that lets the smoke out, and the volume or tone turns on the burner that ignites the smoke bomb.
Some, but not all of Ace’s guitars weren’t even routed for middle pickups, they just stuck a dummy middle pickup on the surface for looks.
