    R6, in the Face Tracking AF method (not the Spot AF), clicking the Joystick once will create a spot area in the center of the EVF. That spot area will be considered as Face and be automatically tracked. So if the camera loses focus, you just quickly point the target to the center of the EVF and push the Joystick once, a spot will appear there and start tracking automatically. Then you push and hold the Eye AF button (*, in your customization) to obtain Eye AF. If you click the Joystick one more time, the Face select will be turned off.

    Get well soon my friend. Regards from India.
    Thanks for this video. I too recently bought the R6MK2. My settings are almost the same except I use full area focus instead of spot focus. But the best setting was the crop and full frame DOP button. I needed that and was trying to figure it out. I recently went for some Pallid Harrier pictures. The bird was at a certain distance away and though I got the focus and sharpness correctly, I was missing the reach. I dont know with 9 mp at 1.6x whether the file size will remain the same, but atleast the photo will look bigger. Going to try this out during my regular weekend practice recce. Thanks a lot. And a Happy New Year to you. May your subscribers cross 100k this year.

    Unlike the original R6, the Mark II allows 3 custom modes for video as well as stills. Do you use more than one setting for either stills or video? If so, do you vary between your various Canon bodies? The lack of custom video functions is my biggest gripe with the R6. So if I want slo-mo, for instance, I have to use my R5 for that.

    Hey Brent, I hope your shoulder is better. I set up my R5 & R6 from your earlier video in 2021 in regards to back button focus. I do weddings and birds and have had much success. Now however, since both cameras were sent to CPS for cleaning and software upgrades last month, my back buttons won't stay programmed. I have had eye focus on the AF On button and Spot Focus on the * button. I noticed from this new video that you have them swapped. Can you shed any light on why my previous settings no longer work? In the meantime, I'll set both cameras up to match your current settings and give that a whirl. Thank you for making your videos. They are very helpful. Kathy

    Do what the shoulder orthopedic specialists tells you to do, then rehab with serious intent.
    I’ve been through it, it sucks, but it helps speed your recovery.

      @Brent Hall ok thanks Brent. I guess where I get confused sometimes is if I aquire reg spot focus on a bird and it starts moving along the ground a little smaller box goes to the eye and starts tracking. Now that sounds great but it's doing this without me engaging my actual eye tracking. I'm a little confused. I'm set up just the same as you. Other than I have whole area off. Thanks for all your help. 👍

      Yes, it’s a real pain which interferes with your control over the spot autofocus!
      Duade has a nice work around. You can set the AF area button to a subject to detect toggle. Hence when you need complete control over your spot point, you press the toggle to subject to detect ‘NONE’
      So for me
      AF ON : spot
      * button : toggle for subject to detect Auto/ None
      # AF area button : EYE AF
      Duade inverts the last two on my list

    Hey Brent thanks for the video. I'm trying to set my back button focus similar to yours to allow for landscape as well as wildlife. I can't get my AF-ON button to go to Single Shot when I release it as opposed to staying in burst mode which it wants to continue doing. Maybe I misunderstood you in your explanation aroung 11:00. I did try some of the override settings in the INFO (Detail Set) when customizing the button but had no luck.

    Thanks and get well soon. Very helpful just switched to canon yesterday from 30 years with Pentax - quite emotional!! - but so far loving how intuitive it is.
    Do you think crop is better than getting a 1.4x teleconvertor? I guess it’s 6 and two threes!

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  10 місяців тому +1

      It really depends on your mp comfort level. Using the TC will let you keep all your 24mp, whereas putting it in crop mode will take a good chunk of those out. On the downside, using a TC will take a stop out of your min aperture. You just have to pick which sacrifice you're willing to make. I've used crop mode on the R6II and personally I don't mind, because even in crop mode, I still have enough mp to cro pin a bit more and keep 2160 pixels on the long end, which will fit in a 4K timeline. So for me, that's fine. For others, maybe that's not enough resolution.

    Hello. Thank you for your video and explaining why you use the dual back button focus. I noticed that around section 6:26 you skip over the part where you turn off whole area auto focus tracking. I’m trying to understand what that function is for and why someone would leave it off or on. Thank you very much.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  Рік тому +1

      You know, I'm actually not sure if I've noticed any significant real world difference with it on or off, but I'll be honest too, I haven't actually done that much wildlife with this because I mostly use it for filming, and still primarily use my R5 for wildlife photos.

      @@BrentHall I appreciate the replies. I just got my R6 Mark II a couple weeks ago coming from a 70D. It was pretty overwhelming at first but now that I’m getting used to it, I find it to be pretty amazing. I’m still trying to figure out what all the different focus boxes mean under different circumstances. I tried using the magnification option and it didn’t prove to be very useful for composition. I think the R6 Mark II will be fine for my purposes overall, I’m certainly not a professional more of a hobbyist, and the resolution seems to be good enough for me at this point. Keep up the good work, and thank you.

    Is there any advantage to using the 1.6 crop factor in camera instead of cropping later in post processing?
    I guess the files are smaller so you can fit more on your SD card, but will that also allow you to take much more pictures in a burst before the buffer fills up? Or will it make it faster to empty the buffer to the SD card? Those reasons might convince me to give it a try. :)
    But if it doesn't change the number of pics I can shoot in a burst before the buffer fills up or doesn't make it faster to empty the buffer then I'd probably prefer to shoot the full frame and crop later. This way I can choose what and how I crop.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  Рік тому

      The biggest advantage would only really be the better af tracking since the subject will take up more of the frame in camera. It helps for smaller and/or more distant subjects.

    Hi Brent, Love your videos. I'm a total newbie to photography and have just purchased the Canon R6 Mark II. I have setup for Wildlife photography, Is there a different setup for landscape? At what ISO do you start to see noise?. Good luck with you're Shoulder.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  Рік тому +2

      Not for me personally. I use that setup for everything. The dual back button focus allows me to use the af-on button like a single point af, which is perfect for landscape stuff, and the star button allows me to use the eye af and tracking for everything else. That's just me though, there's a ton of different way to set these cameras up based on your own needs.
