It was light weight but packed lots of power. Either size battery didn't seem to make it top heavy and I'm a 64 yr old women so I really appreciated how easy it was to use...................... CORDLESS only way to go !!

I just found this - it's the most relevant video on template guide bushings, hands down. It's clear, there's lots of supporting video, and the style is easy to follow.
Good instructional video Matt, as always. Just a note: 1/2" acrylic (bullet resistant glass) makes for great templates. . You can get it free from any glass shop that does commercial windows and glazing. They remove it from banks and storefronts etc. when it gets scratched. Normally it gets tossed in the dumpster. My buddy owns a glass shop and he turned me on to using it. It's actually very easy to buff crystal clear using a headlight reconditioner compound and a power buffer. Clear templates are really nice to use and it makes locating the layout lines much easier. It cuts really easy too on a table saw or router using the lower rpm range. Btw, there's no such thing as bullet proof glass, it's only bullet resistant. Don't tell any bank tellers. It will stop pistol bullets but that's it. Not a high velocity rifle round.

I bought a metobo router that came with the bushing. I didn't know the use of them, I was ready to through them away. Watching you video save the bushings.
Great explanation on how to use guide bushings. My wife made these carrying crates for mason jars to transport and store our canned goods. She wants handles routed through the sides of the crates. I have the same Bosch router as you and use it so sparingly it is not even funny so I did not even know guide bushings existed until a few days ago. I run a business that performs commercial and residential repairs so I do not come across the need to use my router very often. Guide bushings are exactly what I need to route the handle holes. I use guide bushing to make signs from patterns. I found under heavy use they like to work free. A little Teflon tape or locktite does the trick. Awesome video! Thanks.

Great video. I just got a plunge router to try to rout out a lip for my kreg lift into my MDF workbench. Trying to soak in as much info at possible and this is definitely the best video I've seen yet.
Just "discovered" you on youtube when searching for specific problem..centering cone. Your presentation was great and gave me lots more ideas on how to use router. I am fairly new to woodworking so appreciate seeing (vs reading) tricks/ideas on things that I might need later. The idea of using the router as a drill was a stunner for me; perhaps old hat to some but first time I had been exposed to this concept. Also the simply way to make a mortise template was useful for me. I have subscribed and am overwhelmed buy the volume of your videos. But I will return again and again. Thanks.
Thank you, Matt. This was very helpful. I short time ago I bought the PORTER-CABLE Dovetail Jig with Mini Template Kit (4216), and the Router Template Guide, 9-Piece (42000). These bushings are great and work well. I'm in the process of building a barn door cabinet for our foyer and went out yesterday and bought a 23/32" straight chute router bit and the 1" OD x 25/32" ID Porter Cable guide bushing. I have to make 3 dado cuts in the top and bottom panels for the cabinet dividers and this was recommended as the best option. I'm building a simple router jig that the 1" bushing will fit into and cut perfect 23/32" dadoes. Your video explains how to use the bushings and offsets which is very helpful. Thank you again! Just looking at a way to route letters and numbers in small boards for kids to play with, I will make templates out of plexi I have kicking around then use that with guide bushings to batch them out easily, Thanks for the quick and simple description of use of these tools.

Hi Matt: Your woodworking skills are extremely impressive! I use guide bushings a lot and I noticed that one of the comments mentioned the guide ring nut coming off. I have had problems with this also until I stumbled on some spring lock washers online. They are available from Peachtree Woodworking and they are extremely effective. Awesome, pulled down a Porter Cable template kit Id' forgotten on the shelf for my B&D plunge router and now know it will make it easy to do 1/4" dowel holes with a bit and a scrap board as you demonstrated. I have a nice separate guide for end grain holes, but wanted a better way to get accuracy out on a large mating flat. I'll do the end grain ones first, then use dowel center markers to transfer the locations accurately out onto the flat. Easy peasy

How about using a french cleat on a Mantle shelf...tight to the bottom of the shelf so you can put a couple screws in it to lock it in..great Job Matt.
There's a better jig you can make for circle cutting with a router. You make a pin base jig to do that. I've made a few of those. It works great. You get perfectly round circles. I've done it to fit speakers into cabinets mostly. It's actually my preferred way of making larger diameter holes in wood though.

I had to route a 3mm deep area in a flat surface....I stacked a bunch of sheets of MDF on top of each other, just to make a template, cus there were no bearing cutters that were shallow enough. Then I decided to "invent" something like this. As soon as I started thinking about it, I realised what the thing in the router case that looks exactly like a guide bushing was.
Good job mentioning and showing the centering mandrel. Most base plates on most routers can be calibrated for centering. I've learned the hard way that the Uncle Festool OF1400 has no such adjustability. If they don't fix it I'm stuck with an expensive router that cannot be used with guide bushings.
@@mski349 I sent it to Festool and they didn't fix it. Not only that they either just threw it in the systainer sideways or they didn't lock the plunge mechanism and the box was dropped and banged around by UPS. There is good news, I found a way to get it centered. I had to hack away at the guide bushing plate to access the set screws. It's now perfectly centered but between the router and my kapex, (that I sold), I'm rather soured on Festool. Their tools have a lot of nice features but their service totally blows chunks.
Matt, thank you for this video. About 40 years ago I bought a new Sears router and right away almost severed an arm off (no blood, but scared me very much). So I put it away and never used it again. Recently I purchased a dovetail jig and now I have a use for this unused 40-year-old router. But I didn't understand the guide bushing instructions in the jig instructions. After watching your video, I think I'm getting close. I have not been able to locate bushings that will fit this old router, but time will tell. I will not give up. Your video is good, clear and understandable. If you have advice on how to adopt a bushing for various size plates, that would be helpful.

I had to route a 3mm deep area in a flat surface....I stacked a bunch of sheets of MDF on top of each other, just to make a template, cus there were no bearing cutters that were shallow enough. Then I decided to "invent" something like this. As soon as I started thinking about it, I realised what the thing in the router case that looks exactly like a guide bushing was.

Good job mentioning and showing the centering mandrel. Most base plates on most routers can be calibrated for centering. I've learned the hard way that the Uncle Festool OF1400 has no such adjustability. If they don't fix it I'm stuck with an expensive router that cannot be used with guide bushings.
$600 for a router it should be centered straight out of the systainer, at least mine is. Take it back and have em fix/replace it.

I sent it to Festool and they didn't fix it. Not only that they either just threw it in the systainer sideways or they didn't lock the plunge mechanism and the box was dropped and banged around by UPS.
There is good news, I found a way to get it centered. I had to hack away at the guide bushing plate to access the set screws. It's now perfectly centered but between the router and my kapex, (that I sold), I'm rather soured on Festool. Their tools have a lot of nice features but their service totally blows chunks.

Matt, thank you for this video. About 40 years ago I bought a new Sears router and right away almost severed an arm off (no blood, but scared me very much). So I put it away and never used it again. Recently I purchased a dovetail jig and now I have a use for this unused 40-year-old router. But I didn't understand the guide bushing instructions in the jig instructions. After watching your video, I think I'm getting close. I have not been able to locate bushings that will fit this old router, but time will tell. I will not give up. Your video is good, clear and understandable. If you have advice on how to adopt a bushing for various size plates, that would be helpful.

Great info. and easy to understand! Good job! I just bought a set of guide bushings at harbor freight $15. they fit the standard 1 3/16 base insert. Now I have some new uses for them! Thanks
