I agree 100%. I've searched tons of other youtube videos on cubing and I'm finding myself coming back to badmephisto. Alot of the other videos have great cubers but they can't explain anything to save their life. Badmephisto has a nice way of explaining things and teaching you WHY you do certain things a certain way. It helps to get a clear understanding of how the cube works. I think I've paused your videos over 100 times so far to make notes lol. Anyway......Thanks man!!!
Using the things I have learned from you, I am now down to an average of around 30 seconds. I plan on using the tips in this video to get my average down to around 20 seconds. A few months ago, I couldn't even solve a cube at all. Thank you for taking the time to make all of your videos.
I can honestly say that even though I have outgrown several of your videos, this one is the most new stuff, and right now I'm pushing against the wall of sub20.
I meant more of a youtube noob. Badmephisto is a very respected cuber and teacher, his videos are always very helpful and insightful. Since you are such a better cuber, I would love to see some videos by you as well, they would be even more helpful.
Thank you for something new to think about! A recognition tip I discovered: If the edge's sticker can match the R or L center, it's "good." If not, it will require a cube rotation.
I bought a black Type II a i lubed it with dry lube its a silicone based lube that also cleans what your putting it onto. After i discovered that this cube was bad i really started researching what cube to get and found that most people recommend C4U own style of cube its a DIY and most of the reviews for it have been good like type d speed and type a corner cutting so i bought a black version of that and its still shipping now.
Its intuitive. So yes you do make up your own algorithms for it. You can look some up because they do exist. But if you understand how the cube moves then it shouldn't be too much of a problem
Love the vids!!! But I was wondering if you might be able to write out the algorithm you use to solve the green/orange slot starting at 2:53. I'm trying to watch how you do it but you're so fast!
I'd say improve your finger tricks first. You can do this while working on look ahead. But if you really want to practice look ahead then solve the cube rather slow while looking for the next corner piece to insert. It takes some practice but you will slowly improve. I just recently went from where your at to about 25-30. Also I'd suggest practicing the cross and getting it in under 8 moves. It can always be done.
at 3:00 to 4:50. you dont need to edge flip or rotate. you can hide the corner with an R' and then do a U2 to put the edge in back then do R2 U R'. But if you have a solved slot in the back right it will mess it up. but you couldve done it since the slot was open and you didnt fill them till you gave the edge flip example. So to solve the edge fliped pair, do: R' U2 R2 U R'
Hey, nice video. With the Look Ahead i can finally reach 20s. But would it be okay if you did an advance video on the alg for some complex F2L cases? I know you've already did a video on it, but could you do more of those videos? Thx! =D great video.
Assuming I know the basic right slot F2L algorithms, what is the best set of algorithms to learn next, for example, is it best to learn the front left slots… In order to avoid excessive cube rotations? Or is best to learn one of the back slots next?
this totally makes sense to me. I will often solve the cube in slow motion just so I can see every move that I'm making and I think of the logic behind it and where I can do better
No need. Just learn it intuitively. It will help out overall your understanding of the cube and finding your own method for your finger tricks and it will improve your times. He is just giving you tips so you can understand how it works.
What color cube did you get? Seems that the White type a's work best. White or black. I hear complaints about the type II and III's but good luck finding a type I . Also, how did you lube it? CRC or Jigga loo. NO vaseline or liquid wrench. About to buy a type 2 or 3 White or black DIY soon.
Quit? I think he's a little too busy to be making youtube videos techcrunch.com/2017/06/20/tesla-hires-deep-learning-expert-andrej-karpathy-to-lead-autopilot-vision/
Ive only just started using f2l and 2look oll and 2 look pll and I can solve cube in around a minute or so I just want to know why are cube rotations so bad???
This might be a stupid question, but how do you know ahead of time when you will have to do a cube rotation? Are you only supposed to use the L, R, and U faces when solving F2L, and have to do a cube rotation if those won't work??
Cube rotations are when yoy turn the cube from one side to the other for example if you are looking at blue side and then turn to orange thats a cube rotation
i must disagree, compared to D and B moves, F moves can be done very quickly. With your right hand, you just tilt it slightly and use your pointer finger to do a F'. And its really helpful when doing algorithms with consecutive R', F or F' moves
this is probably a very stupid question but if you have a corner and an edge piece that are already lined up next to eachother how do you insert them without messing everything up?
Uhh at 3:00 couldn't you do either do F R' F' R, or Rw U R' U' M? Maybe he was just trying to give an example of ignoring edge flip but that would be so much faster
or you can solve it without a cube rotation if you dont care about the back right slot. ex. hide the corner with an R' next do a U2 and then do R2 U R'. ta da! lol
Yes, the description says "often they can be avoided, and it is important to know when this can be done." So how do I know when it can be done? I'm pretty good at inserting pairs, I just have a habit of rotating the cube so that my next slot is in the front right position.
Just wanna ask how many weeks does it takes for all the OLLs to be memorized?? I'm still using 2 look OLL and it's slowing my cubing(i guess) my average is 39 seconds.
he shows this in a video somewhere, but he has a logitech webcam (the one with those rubber flexy arm things) that he wedges between his head and his headphones
I've just started doing F2L I don't know any of the algorithims, but I still am able to do group pairs and put them in the right place. Ihave cut my time, should I still learn the algorithims?
in 2 hours after looking at this and a cyoubx video, i dropped by 6 secs. now i just got a pb average of 26 seconds.(I don't even know full 2 look pll or 2 look oll). My f2l went from 18 to 12 seconds. Thanks.
Sir, I started cubing 1.5 month ago and i learned cfop, and was using beginners beginners method like cross on top and my avg was 1.30 minutes, Now I am using Advanced cross, advance f2l and 2 look oll and pll, and now my avg is 1.40 minutes, please help......
Get to 40 seconds with beginners method, come back to CFOP when you're done with that, and get good at cross, be color neutral, and get really good at look ahead and F2L. That should help you out.
right. that's cool. I don't want people to get the idea that cube rotations are evil. I just think its helpful to know when you have to make them, and when you dont. Many times in my solve I end up rotating left, and then right away rotating right, and then realizing I didnt have to do that. Its a waste of precious time.
how many seconds can you solved without pre-inspection? is it fair or unfair that there are pre-inspection before the competition starts, because for me, it's unfair because it gives advantages to those who know rubiks like you
Arghhhh... So frustrated... I can solve entire cube using beginner's method in 1:05. F2L is taking me greater than 2:00. I know that eventually this method is better, but how long until I actually get it? Still not intuitive.
KackBon3rdGen in many cases its fine. for example, the first case he showed you that couldnt be solved without rotations could be done with F R' F' R. Id try to stay away from B moves because theyre really that awkward, and D moves because they dont really help that much unless youre using a specific alg. F moves (in some situations) are fine (if you can solve a case with F' U' F, i would probably do y' R' U' R instead, because that kind of F move is difficult and awkward)
I don't understand the concept of intuitive F2L. Do you just make up the algorithims? I'm very familiar with "technical" F2L-The only algorithims I use are R U R', U' F' U F, and R U R' U'. It takes me about 30 seconds to complete F2L-I really struggle with tracking edges and corners as they move across the cube while I am inserting other pairs. Can you give me some advice? I'm very desperate!
This was made on the day the of the Austin Spring 2009, my would-be first comp. that I had to miss due to personal matters... Anyways, you should film like 15 hours of your day on a Saturday or Sunday cubing, just saying random tips, doing averages, etc. Pull from the video anything notable for a nice sized video.
my best with over 200 moves is 33.85 seconds my best with f2l... 56 seconds haha but im getting better with f2l because i constructed a siamese rubiks cube which forces you to learn f2l and it does really help
i don't think they are that slow, if you can do F with your right finger, and F' with your right thumb or left finger, they can be pretty fast. Might just be me though?
That's compared to D and B. Personally, F and F' are fast for me, but any R, L or U is a hell of a lot faster (although D is still kind of fast for me). This is for people who are into speed, for most (unless you're deformed or hold the cube a strange way) it is best to stay away from B's, D's, and F's (they are also bad for school...)
I agree 100%. I've searched tons of other youtube videos on cubing and I'm finding myself coming back to badmephisto. Alot of the other videos have great cubers but they can't explain anything to save their life. @chetjan
Dw, you are turning the D layer and bring a center with it.
to solve the f2l pair in the back you can do a reverse sledgehammer
pro spotted
I can honestly say that even though I have outgrown several of your videos, this one is the most new stuff, and right now I'm pushing against the wall of sub20.
your the only person i've found that teaches these tricks in just a few hours i can already notice a huge difference thank you
I have trouble realizing when a cube rotation would be better versus no cube rotation, but at a much slower rate
You can use the Dw instead of cuberotations.
@TripleStarTy I would prefer D'L'ULDRU'R', because I don't like to use F or B. I find U,L,R and D much faster to use, if I have a choise.
it depends, if you are comfortable with f2l, then you can learn the algs. but i find intuitive f2l to be easyer and faster at times
I bought a black Type II a i lubed it with dry lube its a silicone based lube that also cleans what your putting it onto. @LukeMata11 when you rotate the cube e.g. if red is facing you then you rotate to another face like green
@MrMonster405 Actually, that's not the case. In lower case R, there is a "hidden" cube rotation.
I'm trying to watch how you do it but you're so fast!

wow. 8 years later, and we are all so desperate we go back to the videos before some of the methods are fully understood.
at 3:00 to 4:50. you dont need to edge flip or rotate. you can hide the corner with an R' and then do a U2 to put the edge in back then do R2 U R'. Well, by using M slice, you can orient edge and then insert the pair. xP
Assuming I know the basic right slot F2L algorithms, what is the best set of algorithms to learn next, for example, is it best to learn the front left slots… In order to avoid excessive cube rotations? Or is best to learn one of the back slots next?
At 2:54, I don’t understand why the orange/green pair can’t be solved without a cube rotation. Can’t you just do U’F’ U F?
this totally makes sense to me. I will often solve the cube in slow motion just so I can see every move that I'm making and I think of the logic behind it and where I can do better
Your videos are very very helpfull ! It helped me a lot ! Thank you very much !
No need. Just learn it intuitively. It will help out overall your understanding of the cube and finding your own method for your finger tricks and it will improve your times. He is just giving you tips so you can understand how it works.
yep, i'm quite big into fps shooters -- css, tf2, etc.
need the best keyboard and mouse for that additional piece of crucial accuracy :)
Your cubing tutorials are the only videos I can understand!
This is a terrible video. No wonder Bad Mephisto quit cubing!

Ok i just bought a Cube4you type II (a) DIY cube and discovered that the type 2 is horrible so i was wondering what cube is the best?
Cube rotations are when yoy turn the cube from one side to the other for example if you are looking at blue side and then turn to orange thats a cube rotation
i must disagree, compared to D and B moves, F moves can be done very quickly. With your right hand, you just tilt it slightly and use your pointer finger to do a F'. And its really helpful when doing algorithms with consecutive R', F or F' moves
no i definitely dont think that. check the vid description. probably should have mentioned it in the actual vid. but yea
What's the move set to rotate a edge piece
is there a way to move the back layer without rotating???
this is probably a very stupid question but if you have a corner and an edge piece that are already lined up next to eachother how do you insert them without messing everything up?
@badmephisto what type is your cube anyway?
@badmephisto how fast can you solve the cube?
Uhh at 3:00 couldn't you do either do F R' F' R, or Rw U R' U' M? Maybe he was just trying to give an example of ignoring edge flip but that would be so much faster
or you can solve it without a cube rotation if you dont care about the back right slot. ex. hide the corner with an R' next do a U2 and then do R2 U R'. ta da! lol
your the best teacher for these kinds of things.
should i learn all the common cases and try to turn one of the uncommon ones into a common one or should i try to go remember each case?
you can, you just don't want to. they are slow. and cube rotations are ok, but too many of them are to be avoided.
does a (d) for example, count as a cube rotation?
when i know 2 look oll and 2 look pll and average from 45 to 1:10 secs, should i learn full pll and oll or better improve my f2l?
Definitely F2L
TheNorthernCuber k thx am around 30 to 40 secs now, but im not improving anymore..
Learn Pll and Oll and then practice F2L
can someone help me i'm trying figure out a 2 gen algorithm for one f2l case in roux that doesn't require a cube rotation that goes y R U R' y'
Yes, the description says "often they can be avoided, and it is important to know when this can be done." So how do I know when it can be done? I'm pretty good at inserting pairs, I just have a habit of rotating the cube so that my next slot is in the front right position.
oh!!!!
k........
i had dis question may sound stupid...
is doing d or d' better dan cube rotations??
what's your main and demo cubes?
Can I ask something Sir?
Are you gonna make a tutorial on COLL?
So for F2L, is it better to solve with the least rotations or the least number of moves?
uh can i solve it with the corner piece fliped?
What's the formula at 2:18 ??
@davape69 i think so XD, u can see the image is shaking!
Use back sledge for back pairs with no edge flip
That requires a B move. But you only supposed to do R U and L moves
How do I get to the f2l algorithm I want to practice?
in 2 hours after looking at this and a cyoubx video, i dropped by 6 secs. now i just got a pb average of 26 seconds.(I don't even know full 2 look pll or 2 look oll). My f2l went from 18 to 12 seconds. Thanks.

wow... i wouldnt do that. get sub 50 with beginners, then learn cfop, and sub 50 with beginners fipor me only took about 3 weeks.
Get to 40 seconds with beginners method, come back to CFOP when you're done with that, and get good at cross, be color neutral, and get really good at look ahead and F2L. That should help you out.
Would you please paste a link to a video that can teach me to solve a rubik's cube by beginners method in 40 seconds. Thanks.
Mr Badmephisto...Can you send me one of your cubes!? They move so fast!!
What are your tips for learning all 41 algs. thats my issue.
You can do F2L completely intuitively with no algs.
Why would you want completly non rotation f2l? That would lead to slower pairing
I leaned F2L by your videos, but it takes time to identify the colors and place them. I can solve the cube in 40 second without F2L.
+Jyotroop Singh damn props to u if u can get 40s with the begiiners method i just got 50s
+Clayton Hwang yo, now I m getting 40s with F2L ,.....damn
How
How are you doing now??
I am sub 17 now.....
Thank u my teacher Badmephisto
Superb, as always!
right. that's cool. I don't want people to get the idea that cube rotations are evil. I just think its helpful to know when you have to make them, and when you dont. Many times in my solve I end up rotating left, and then right away rotating right, and then realizing I didnt have to do that. Its a waste of precious time.
Im sub 35 with a 25 cross and f2l how do i make it 15 second for both cross and f2l
how many seconds can you solved without pre-inspection? is it fair or unfair that there are pre-inspection before the competition starts, because for me, it's unfair because it gives advantages to those who know rubiks like you
is it never necessary to make more than one cube rotation on a single f2l slot?
Arghhhh... So frustrated... I can solve entire cube using beginner's method in 1:05. F2L is taking me greater than 2:00. I know that eventually this method is better, but how long until I actually get it? Still not intuitive.
Might be a little late but that's the point of learning F2L. Your times will be a little slow but after practice for a few weeks, you will be better!
Is it really bad doing F2L without cube rotations at all but with akward F, D and B moves?
KackBon3rdGen in many cases its fine. for example, the first case he showed you that couldnt be solved without rotations could be done with F R' F' R. my DIY rubiks cube type A is not as smooth as yours, even with a lubricant
how are you holding the camera?
What do you mean by cube rotation?
I don't understand the concept of intuitive F2L. Do you just make up the algorithims? I'm very familiar with "technical" F2L-The only algorithims I use are R U R', U' F' U F, and R U R' U'. @Aiming4Harvard oh man, that game was wayyy too addictive
Man I'm getting use to advanced F2L but I'm really slow because I need to get the logic behind so I can be faster like what drewsky684 said.
you're too kind :) glad you like them. thanks
Can't we use any B or F moves?
i don't think they are that slow, if you can do F with your right finger, and F' with your right thumb or left finger, they can be pretty fast. Might just be me though?
wooww mann all your tutorials are awesome :)
thanks for this man. I will try to keep doing this and get my time lower. also my PB is 24 sec. but my average is 37
hand cruncher for warm up >:D
no cube rotations are ok to do. check the vid description
That's compared to D and B. Personally, F and F' are fast for me, but any R, L or U is a hell of a lot faster (although D is still kind of fast for me). This is an ancient f2l video filmed in 1921. It was recoloured because they only had black and white cubes in 1921.
rubik came from 1973 lol
very good tips... i need that! thanks!
hey idol!!! whats ur new record in 3x3x3?
buenos videos señor....k buenos consejos aunk..a de saber k el mejor guia de rubik 3x3 esta en español..explicado por rhulius
would doing (Dw U) or (Dw' U') moves count as cube rotations?
DoctorDerps (Pat) that's avoids the point
Yep, it's on headphones ;-)
time + practice is ALWAYS the best method. Thats the base line. Everything I say is just stuff on top of that.
What's your time at now?
Go Pro wasn't out when he made this. Well it could have been but I'm relatively sure this video is older than that.
