  • Hello everyone, and welcome back to our Tokaj adventure! Today, we're leaving the ruins of Veľký Kamenec behind and heading to the village of Streda nad Bodrogom, where we'll visit the local town hall, which is housed in a beautiful castle.
Streda nad Bodrogom: The Vécsey Castle
The Vécsey Castle, as it's known, stands on the site of a former medieval fortress. The original castle was built sometime in the 13th or early 14th century, and it played a significant role in the region's history. In 1451, it was captured by Hussite rebels who held it until 1459.
Following Hungary's defeat at the Battle of Mohács and the Ottoman occupation of much of the country, the castle found itself on the border of the remaining Hungarian territory. This led to the construction of more robust fortifications, including the strengthening of other buildings in the village, particularly the church. In this context, there are also mentions of an underground passage from the late 16th century that connected the castle to the fortified church.
In 1670, the so-called Wesselényi Rebellion broke out in Hungary, and the castle's then-owner joined the rebels. After the rebellion's defeat, the castle and other fortifications were demolished by imperial troops. The estate was confiscated and in 1672, it was acquired by the Vécsey family, who built the present-day castle on the ruins of the old one.
Today, the castle's remnants include several sections of the castle walls, part of a bastion, and a gate. A memorial plaque on the castle commemorates Hungarian politician Lajos Kossuth, who worked as a lawyer for the castle's owners in 1832 before embarking on his political career.
    Borša: From Castle to Mansion
Next to the castle, or rather the mansion, lies an extensive 19th-century castle garden. However, we continued on to the village of Borša, where a castle once stood, later converted into a mansion. There is not much information available about the history of Borša Castle.
This stone water castle was probably built after the Tatar invasion in the 13th century, and its defense was aided by water moats filled with water from the Bodrog River. By the 16th century, however, a mansion stood on the site of the former castle, where Francis II Rákóczi was born in 1676.
The mansion has been beautifully reconstructed and now serves as a hotel. It also houses exhibits dedicated to Francis II Rákóczi. In addition to the exhibition, the mansion offers a virtual tour and an escape room.
Right next to the mansion, you can enter the protected Borša lowland forest, part of which is accessible by a wooden walkway. We didn't linger here for long and continued on to the village of Malá Tŕňa to visit the Tokaj lookout tower.
