- Tom Baker, distinguished British actor, with the one of the most distinctive voices ever, known for his role in Doctor Who, and the narrator in Little Britain, and films such as Golden Voyage Of Sinbad, talks about his experience in the role of the crazy, mad, seadog Captain Rum in Blackadder II, and working with Rowan Atkinson.

I wish we could have got more of Atkinson and Baker together on screen.
I think Captain Rum was one of the funniest parts in that series.
Ohhhh! You've posted a WOMAN'S comment!
Its a pity he wasn't in more episodes he was a brilliant character.
I don't think Atkinson's ego would have allowed that.
@SynthJohn because he had a woman's ego my lord!
Redbeard showing up in different guises in the later time periods could have been a great addition.
Bit ironic given how he himself was like Atkinson on the set of Doctor Who
Even Tom Baker admitted he was a bit much in his last Doctor Who season.
Redbeard Rum is a fabulous performance by Baker. I'm very glad it ended up that way.
I think rown has said him self that in his younger years perhaps showed a little to much ambition . This was after the rest of the cast of not the nine o'clock news said he did tend to come across as being a little too up him self and somewhat aloof
The supporting cast and guest stars always were funnier. And seriously, Rowan Atkinson? You actually expected THE Tom Baker to not upstage you? 😂
I didn't get where I am today, by being upstaged by Captain Rum. Even missing both legs and a hand.
Did he have a hook for a hand like on the pic? I never noticed!
You can just imagine how that conversation would have gone with the younger Tom.
I respect Rowan Atkinson immensely, but telling Tom Baker to tone down one of his most brilliantly unhinged performances ever is just simple foolishness.
Loved this scene. So funny.
Will there be a series five because rowan has say blackadder could return in the future? Will rowan play evil original edmund illegitimate son or grandson?
I am not sure if there would be a new series, but Rowan Atkinson as a Tory MP would be interesting with Baldrick, and if Rik Mayall was alive, an Alan B'stard crossover with Blackadder would have been interesting with B'stard as a Labour or UKIP turncoat. I know Rik played Lord Flashheart, but imagine seeing him in a battle of wits as B'stard against Blackadder would have been amazing.
What an amazing behind-the-scene anecdote, and insight into Atkinson's character. Why are some brilliantly creative artists so judgemental?
Good question, which to be honest, I don't know the answer to, but I can imagine Atkinson felt the same way when ever Rik Mayall appeared in Blackadder, because it was very hard to upstage Rik Mayall imo
HA HA HA HAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Me laddie
- Best introduction EVER!
Tom Baker, brilliant as always.
Not joining us in the ha ha's percy?
Tom Baker complaining that the leading man on a show he's a guest in is overbearing, opinionated and quite often wrong about others' performances. I hope he knows what he's saying here and giving many ironic looks to the audience.
YOU HAVE A WOMAN'S IRONIC LOOK... ME LORD!! 😂😂
Or he's just calling out the mans prima donna behaviour.
Well perhaps Atkinson should've persuaded Elton and Curtis to get someone meek and mild. You get Tom Baker because you want Tom Baker. It's the same with Brian Blessed. Anyway, I've always thought of Rowan Atkinson as a pompous snob.
Fascinating
One wonders if there are different memories of those interactions...
Maybe, however, I believe Tom.
@SynthJohn No reason to DISbelieve him, just noting that different people remember different parts of the same interactions (suggestion/dictat) and certainly recollection vs. guesswork over reasoning behind actions (is it more diva-y to 'demand' certain characterisation, or to pointedly not go to the cast party? Either, neither or both) can radically change perspective.
Apparently he's a bit of a Prima Donna and has a high oppinion of himself.
Nice to see Tom didn't balk.
Yeah, I mean Tom had his moments on Doctor Who with clashing with certain writers, and some cast members during his last season, however I think Baker only wanted to get the best out of the writers and performances, and I haven't heard many stories of Baker asking actors on Doctor who to tone down their performance. So, out of Baker and Atkinson, I would rather work with Baker.
“You have a woman’s mouth me lord!”
atkinson never did anything funny on his own
Maybe from a writing perspective but he carried a lot of shows with his performance. It sounds like he was dick here though. Tom Baker in the bar ("you have a woman's....." etc) Is absolutely fucking hysterical. I always thought Atkinson played it the frustration perfectly in that scene, but I guess some of that may have been genuine.
Opinions are divided on the subject. *They* all think he's funny, and you don't! 😁
Well, that's definitely not true! 😂

Atkinson is a comedy genius! Did you not watch "Blackadder" and "Mr. Bean"? He could make you laugh with his face and body without saying a word.
