    I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR MIGUEL, NOR DOES MUSK.
    Musk like Tesla, makes things happen and doesn't just talk about them. Musk doesn't acknowledge words like never or can't rather he keeps digging until he finds the answers.

    The Brazilian guy is an example of lack of vision. This interview will be played decades from now to show how wrong and shortsighted some humans were. He'll be laughed at for being one of the closed minded smart men.

    The ethical considerations are irrelevant. If we don't do it, the Chinese will. Miguel makes a few very bold claims. "AI will NEVER surpass human minds". "Neural enhancement of healthy people is impossible" "No ethics board would approve this". Possible or not, I support any effort to research and experiment with this technology.

      That's actually a very likely senerio for the advent of the singularity. Imagine, we craft a neural lace and connect ourselves... to ourselves. Imagine.... what we can imagine all together AT ONCE. But there are major drawbacks. ... one: the lace has yet to be created... No serious problem. Just science, we'll figure out the human brain. Though, I doubt any great discoveries will come from Miguel( from the video) people filled with "can't" and "won't" are usually filled with "dont". Two: (most important imo) such a neural lace network would have to have IMMENSELY insane security and firewalls. Because I'm a technology lover to the bone and even I would not be stupid enough to trust my brain to such a thing without protection.
      Imagine somebody hacking your brain....

    so....connect humans to an artificial interface, giving hackers access to 9 billion of tHE most powerful computers in the world (ie..human brains)? idiotic...

    • @gamercatsz5441
      @gamercatsz5441 6 років тому +7

      Soon we won't be the most powerful computers in the world anymore, that's the whole point why he's created neurolink.

    • @Link75757
      @Link75757 6 років тому

      That's like saying hackers have access to the digital identities of every person on the planet.
      That's simply not true. Most people on Earth don't even have access to digital technology.
      The real concern here is government agencies being able to access our thoughts, as they already do through our online activities.
      But as CGP Grey pointed out, “Given the choice to have someone read your mind or read your phone, if you seriously think about it, you'd probably pick the former.”
      My point is that, due to the fact that the technology behind our devices' encryption systems is literally made of math, which is, for all practical purposes, essentially unbreakable, we shouldn't be concerned about some guy on the other side of the world hacking our brains, but about legal actions that allow governments to access our thoughts.
      As CGP Grey also pointed out, “Access to your phone today is, inevitably, access to your mind tomorrow.”, and as any tech expert can tell you, there's no way to make a device secure against bad guys, but insecure against good guys.
      Point is, you can definitely make a device that's statistically unbreakable, as is the case with our current technology. But as the ones who hold political power can be allowed access to our devices, and, therefore, our minds in the future, the technology can be easily exploited by the ill intended. And with something as personal as our brains at stake, there is no doubt that these systems will be made secure.

    • @gamercatsz5441
      @gamercatsz5441 6 років тому +1

      Most people already have acces to the internet, and in less than a decade virtually everyone will have acces to internet and a smartphone. And litterally NO ONE gives a shit about acces to YOUR brain when they have acces to a super AI with more brainpower than all humans combined.

    • @NMSUNSETGOURMET
      @NMSUNSETGOURMET 6 років тому

      One minor issue, the humans hacking the super intelligence are no more than gas hoofing drooling yokels compared to the electronic singularity possessing comparatively infinite intellect.

  • @robertbyrd7121

    The last gentleman was very smart and well spoken. Had some great points. However, lost almost all credibility for me when he said he himself was working with the military on a similar adaption of this technology. Seems like he stated every loop hole possible for why himself and the military were developing similar technology in the most ethical way possible and Mr. Musk would not be doing the same. I'd retort that it doesn't matter the ethical practices that go into the development once the technology goes into the wrong hands or is adapted in unfavorable ways. The military is not NOT known for weaponizing new and cutting edge technology. I think Elon Musk's main argument with AI is to democratize it as much as possible. In other words make it available for the masses so if and when it becomes dangerous there is access to defense for the masses. Essentially I see his viewpoint as a modern day adaptation of the 2nd amendment. That is to say, the masses should have the technological means to protect themselves from harm domestic or otherwise. As for the whole haves and haves not argument, they must not understand open source. Elon is developing AI open source for the reasons stated above, he is developing electric cars, renewable sustainable energy, and the technology to make humans an interplanetary species. All significant advancements for the betterment of mankind. He has put his reputation and his fortune on the line multiple times to stand up and do what he has thought is right. Not saying I am 100% sold on this one but I feel more comfortable with him developing it in the public eye than the military developing it in secret. Might sound a bit like I'm over here worshiping at Mr. Musk's feet, I assure you I am not. The guy isn't perfect by any means. He uses his position of power and fortune to push his own agenda just like everybody else at that level. In my opinion he also learned years back to drastically over sell his ideas and concepts early on to raise capital for development. The guy is making progress like nobody else out there. Only time will tell if or how much humanity truly benefits from that progress. One thing is for certain, good or bad, his name will be part of history for some time to come.

    It sounds worthwhile to me but I don't see how it avoids the risks. Just the Terminator scenario for instance. Should we think it won't build robots that kill us because it feels itself to actually be us? Maybe. Neuralink could be our only hope of surviving.

    • @AlignAGI
      @AlignAGI 6 років тому

      Ronald Reynolds it doesn't matter if it is malevolent. If it wants to kill us it will do it in the most efficient way, probably a frequency that liquifies our brains. We won't have to worry about a terminator cause that's just silly and very inefficient.
      So either we die instantly or it's benevolent and will help us in every area and then some.

    I really really hope that whatever societal conditions exist by the time this is brought to market allow for a rapid and complete adoption of this technology worldwide. I mean who knows what the outcome could be if this technology is unevenly distributed, as computation power will provide such a massive and complete advantage to those who have an ultra high bandwidth pipeline... the other problem is more profound, which is that aside from the interface intelligence will now be something that can be bought, rented and traded like any other commodity. Therefore there could be a natural progression towards one entity or group buying out the thinking capacity from the rest of the world, which is quite scary (what could be done with such absolute power...)

    I have a friend working in the same area! Proud of her! AI doesn't always mean that we have to become cyborgs. Such a tool can help a lot of people, like the modern Prosthesis and Implants. But sure, it can become a powerful weapon when in wrong hands.
    A part of Michio Kaku's "The Future of the Mind" cover the same topic. It is indeed a bit scary, but also very inspiring and thrilling! even with electricity as invention we could go in different directions. It is up to our humanity what we would do with such a tool.

    lol, omg NEVER is such a long time, ... of course this is going to happen. If not publicly, then in secret, maybe not a NET so to speak , but perhaps a bio-something or rather chip/pill that allows a temporary connection (keep your prescription up to date) or maybe not even that just a simple receiver that can deduce your intentions an induces certain actions like in a MechWarrior from 1990's, Hmmm I wonder if the military woul;d be interested in a big huge walking tank that could perform like a ballerina while doing trajectory calculations? Personally I cant wait for an extra big set of arms to lift things up, see in the dark eyeballs a new set of Nike underwater lungs and I really want an eye in the back of my head, I would also get the address book too.all previous references from 1950's science fiction. The point is really this, .. if it can be imagined, its practically already done.the development time is now augmented and no-one can tell you how fast things are going to get in the very near future, in human time frames that is hehehe old scool. see you in the Future.

    sounds cool and all but sounds like we'd just trap ourselves in. releasing all of our deepest darkest secrets, all of our memories, and also jeopardizing our control of self potentially.
    Like imagine a really bad acid trip, you get an ego death, then all of a sudden, everyone you know and love just knows everything about you or what youve done, as well as what you're thinking at the very present moment, and vice versa.. constant glitching and choking to process an unfathomable amount of consciousness in one bubble. on top of that, with anyone else or any other AIs connected to the Singularity, perhaps they have a 'conscious monopoly' in that 'world' or stream of consciousness, and you'll only be set to become a node for them where they see everything you sense (see, hear, taste, touch, smell) and transmute that data into the singularity, while you're unable to resist or move freely to what you personally consciously want because you no longer have a persona/identity. youre just a huge clump of consciousness rooted by Satan or Lucifer or Sophia or whatever the fuck u wanna call it
    and what if maybe that was hell? Just chaos, oscillating infinitely

    No disrespect to Dr. Nicolelis, his work serves as a great benefit, but he may want to refrain from predicting. Mainly he's being off-topic. He repeats that down- and uploading thoughts and knowledge would be impossible and therefore an AI would not become a threat to marvelous humanity - but nobody is talking about that in this context. The public's ideas about AI are very different from what those working on and about it are. Bottomline, the emergence of a superintelligent AI able to compete with us is likely to be something rather *different* to our intelligence (you might try to define intelligence). Neuralink is at its 1st steps, its very 1st thoughts. Dr. Nicolelis talks very much like the opponents to a number of technologies that are now common practise. The visionaries will be often wrong, but those constantly arguing about what is impossible are wrong more often.
    As for the ethical aspect, we have continuously learned from applications meant for improving life with disability (and the other way round). Research into such improvements *will* result in the improvement of other applications. Which would be a start. Think of the human guineapig being very willing because the experiment might improve, save even an otherwise intolerable life. I'd say yes, if it'd help me.
    Finally, Giordano's question about 'who gets it', i.e. only those able to afford it - valid point. With really everything. Right now. No difference there. Thus not an argument to counter exploring in this direction.

    I would say, that the merge between humans and technology, is the only right option for the future of the human race. If we totally refuse to merge with technology, sooner or later the AI (or AGI) will outsmart us and leave us behind, to follow it's own goals. In that case, even if it doesn't kill us, left behind we won't be anymore on the front line of the achievements, of what we've created. Now, I can imagine, that not everyone will happily embrace the opportunity to merge with technology. There are 2 important factors, which will play in that case. First, those who don't agree with the fusion, won't be able to stop it and prevent those, who want it to do it for themselves. Second, those who want to merge, will be willing to do so, even if they have to leave the others behind, like myself for example. (I imagine, that at certain point it will be rather a matter of desire, than doability) To be able to stay on the front line of the scientific progress, one shouldn't hesitate to merge with technology. It may actually happen, that the humanity will split in 2 parts - those who fuse with the machines, and those who prefer to rely on their biological bodies. (Which somehow reminds me about the comparison between the modern humans and the modern chimpanzees...)

    Genetics is a better way to compete than cybernetics. DNA is a nano-tech manufacture/regulation system and far more efficient energy-wise than any machine. The first treatment ever to have an adult DNA rewritten occurred just a couple weeks ago. Also, no need for replacement limbs or implants.
    A genetically augmented brain would be far faster and more creative than a cybernetic one. Of course, it wouldn't be able to interface the way a cybernetic mod could, but it would be a lot more efficient and effective "offline." To put it another way, a cybermod could absorb knowledge that's already been discovered far faster, but a genemod could discover new knowledge far faster.

    Hi, you don't know me but if you're reading this and have some time to spare, it would be a great help to an existential question that I've been facing for a long time.
    I think I see a "Great Filter" in front of us in the form of "Reward Death".
    To understand what I mean by 'Reward Death', we will have to understand the relation between consciousness and reward. Now, for the sake of simplicity, we will divide the human experience into two parts.One deals with the mental capacity of performing actions and the other deals with reward( say reptilian brain. )
    One can easily self reflect to realise that all his actions and thoughts are either to propel himself towards more reward positive future or away from some reward negative experience or possibility. This method of reward worked pretty good for all conscious beings that evolution has produced so far.
    Now, by observing the exponential nature of the increment of adaptability ( or problem solving capacity ) of the living system, that we are a part of. One can easily entertain the possibility of so called “Singularity by ASI”.
    Assuming you have solved the ‘Alignment Problem’, i.e. you can command it as per you desire.
    As soon as you get your hands on the device, a very interesting thing will happen and the device will act as a ‘reward hack’.
    As the basic nature of brain is to shoot for the most reward positive future and avoid any reward negative.
    Your conscious feeling will have a very little disturbed trajectory towards more and more reward positive state.
    The more reward positive you feel the more reward positive you want to feel. Eventually leading to reward induced coma like state that is ‘reward death’. This reward death will not be much different than overdosing of opium, cocaine, or any other reward hacking drug.
    One might think now that he is aware of the fact. He will choose not to go in that direction just like one knows the happiness associated with drugs and yet choose not to take them.
    But your body don’t feel a natural desire to consume drug thus providing you with a choice. This is not the same case with your natural desires for example SEX.
    The more sexually aroused you are the more sexually aroused you want to feel and when you hit orgasm your brain breaks the cycle and you return to normal again
    At the point of organism if you are provided with a choice not to break the cycle..
    You will choose to prolong it a little more and then a little more and then a little more...
    In the condition 'Reward death' your brain will stop the process of thinking and if somebody successfully force out of it you will I want to fall back in it with a urge worst then any addiction case we have faced so far .

    Someone help me out, please? So I've heard Elon Musk talk about this "mesh" being implanted in the brain. I saw another interview where he suggested it could be nanobots injected intravenously. Either way, the whole point is to interconnect with AI so we don't get left behind. He has stated that if we do not, best case scenario AI treats us like a house cat. Worst case scenario AI sees us as a virus to the earth and wipes us out. Alright. I know I'm rambling but here's my question: If we interconnect our brains with AI in order to "keep up" (for lack of a better term) what will keep AI from deciding to override our implants and enslaving us if it sees fit? This is a serious question and it may sound stupid to some, but computers are hacked all the time. What if AI decides to hack into our brains? Has anyone else thought of this?
