I don't think Russia wanted to capture Kiev. In conflict with Georgia, Russian forces used similar strategy. They surrounded the capital and then stayed there before finally pulling back. The losses incurred by Georgian state in the process were of generational nature, and same has happened with Ukraine. Any manjhan Yankis and their lackeys were selling about prosperity is negated to such an extent that most Ukrainians would consider provocations by Ukrainian leadership on behest of the Yankis quite unwise.

The simple explanation is, defense is easier and Russia did not correctly estimate the large number of shoulder fired weapons (anti tank and anti air) supplied by the West. A rag tag army of Taliban took heavy losses but in the end prevailed. Western propaganda definitely beating out Russian. I think it’s going to be a slow grind from now onwards. Russia will try there next to limit their losses and use a slow and steady approach to capture strategic territory. There is always a chance that a frustrated Russia hits the European supply lines more aggressively
