Oops! Just caught a typo on the video! Watson was killed in 1910, not 1919 as the caption in the video states. Naturally, you always catch the errors AFTER the video is posted!
Just visited the Smallwood store (museum and gift shop) - just as you see in the video and a must-see stop for history buffs.
Did you go to his homestead? His cistern, foundations and a huge kettle(molasses?) are still very visible. His old Ford is even rusting away out there. I love old history like this and I love to fish. So I try to make the pilgrimage from SC(Watson's home state) to the Glades twice a year.
Not yet hellsbay, but it is definitely on my to do list for this winter! Debating on whether to do a 2 day kayak trip or book a fishing charter with a planned detour!
I thought I had the ONLY Smallwood in Florida?
I live near there and I found out about that story and was wondering
Shadow Country, as Peter Matthiessen re-wrote the Watson trilogy, is a great American novel. It brings this place to life. Thanks for posting.
