ok thanks one more final Question do you cut all the pins the same lenght or do you cut the one in the handle shorter or does it matter
Sorry for the late reply I somehow missed your comment. The pin on the handle is shorter by the thickness of the flat bar, but it wouldn’t really matter in terms of operation. 👍🙂

I wish this had come into my feed about a month ago. I really botched a tool for bending wires, and it made it so complicated to bend. If I had made your tool, it would have been quicker and simpler to use.

i don’t have welding machine and the skill to use it, needed to bend think brass rods, made one with wood and worked fine

Thanks for this. I made one to your design and it works very well. For square corners I just put a piece angle iron over the pivot point and it produces very sharp corners. Well done 👍

Nice tool and kudos on your stick welding skills. I just bought an old Thunderbolt AC/DC to do work my mig won't. Didn't realize how long it's been since I used electrodes, but gaining each time!
Thanks D M, yeah most welding is IMO 10% theory and 90% practice. It’s alway very satisfying when the flux just lifts away from the weld. 😊

Great little jig for light work. That 1/4” flat bar bent the dowels pretty good and that affects the straightness of the piece. I would suggest having to braces for welding the dowels in to keep them aligned, just another piece of flat stock. And weld both sides of the dowels then grind down the one you put your bending bar on it might help for thicker stock
Thank you and very well spotted, you are the first one to notice and comment. I do agree that would ensure they stay perfectly aligned. The actual issue though was the hole to pin size, ie the holes I drilled were slightly too large for the pins (my fault for making do with the tools I had). Ideally they should be an interference fit and if I made another set, that’s what I would do. I may still weld them but done correctly it probably would not be necessary. Glad you liked the video. 👍🙂
@@EverydayWorkshopyes I thought the countersink was to get a really deep weld in to stabilize them. I am currently working on making this for some decorative rebar stuff on the honey do list
@EverydayWorkshop Fun video. Another option might be to thread the holes and use bolts with the head cut off. (or leave them on...) I'd still bevel and weld the bottom.

Lovely project and skills demonstrated. We have all done it but naughty on welding that Galvanised tube.
Glad you liked it, thanks. You are absolutely correct it’s not good welding galvanised pipe. In my meagre defense I did grind off the galvanising from the outside of the pipe and had the workshop well ventilated and did wear a respirator mask. I of course do not recommend anybody welding galvanised material. Thanks for watching. 😊👍
@@EverydayWorkshop well sometimes we just have to use what we have. It is actually really hard to remove Galv often the grinders will just smear it around. I’m just a armchair engineer but drop by and say hi I’m doing some fanricobblering at the moment on my channel. I’m sorely out of practice.
@@allthegearnoidea6752 Amen brother. I had a big project that I could only get galv tubing for. What a pain in the arse to remove the gal, and then there is the issue of painting it, that's an even bigger pain in the arse.

Great jig, however what caught my eye was the narrow depth of your heavy duty work bench. I think that is a great idea as well especially if you a smaller garage shop. I have not seen that before. Do you have a free standing table for larger projects?
Hi Pete, thanks. I specifically built the bench to make the best use of space as you mention as space is at a premium. (there are a couple of videos on the bench build, I’ll post the links). Funny you mention a free standing work bench, I do have a small welding table which slides underneath the main bench. It’s not ideal and I have a plan to build a more versatile bench on wheels to carry my welders and kit. Grinder clamps vice etc. Just got to get around to it, you’ve inspired me 😊.

total newb here....totally intrigued and want to learn.... have workshop, angle grinder, drill press and vise....what else do I need to get? what resources do you recommend to learn this type of welding?
Hi, great you enjoyed it. Sounds like you have the basics, you can do a lot with them. I stick welded these which is a great way to weld and is very strong when done correctly. Although I would recommend a hobby type mig welder as they are easy to weld with and clean without the flux slag left over. There are loads of videos on UA-cam about them. Then just practice as welding is about 10% theory and 90% practice and experimentation IMO.
In terms of other tools when you find you need something in particular to complete a task, that’s when you should buy it, and build your tools up bit by bit. Hope this helps. 😊

however just a word of advice the pipe handle would have been better if you cut the flat bar 4" to fit inside the pipe handle and would look more pro you can still do it by cutting of the handled off trim the flat bar to fit inside the pipe and weld just the ends will make you project very pro

Are the pins a tool steel metal or just plain old cold roll? Great job
Hi Scott, thanks. They are actually the shanks of some 8.8 16mm bolts. They are plenty strong enough and work great. Pleased you enjoyed the video. 👍🙂
super idea, just ordered parts and gonna make the same. What the distance between the pins on the base cause I don't get that 43mm ?
Hi Andrew, really pleased you like it. Not sure we’re you get the 43mm from, I think it’s about 35mm between the pin centres. Although the measurements aren’t super critical, it does depend on what you want to bend. Have you checked out the short video showing the sizes.

I hope this helps you but if anything isn’t clear please just let me know. As I’ve mentioned in the shorts video non of the dimensions are critical, you can make it with whatever you happen to have around that is up to the task.

how can you bend such thick metal without heat?
Hi, well if you have enough force any metal can be bent. As long as the equipment you use is stronger than the material you are bending, you’re good. Heat is great and essential in some situations, but if you don’t need it, there is no need to use it. 😊

If it doesn’t show what you need please message again. The distance between the each bar is the more critical one, which is I think 35mm. Although this really depends on what you need it for. You can adjust all the dimensions as you need.

What is the distance between the pins and what size pins did you use? Flashing the ruler, once with your hand covering the ruler's end, was not helpful. I was really just showing the procedure for entertainment, I didn’t think of displaying the measurements on the steel rule. I’ve just checked though and the centre’s between all three pins is randomly 43mm (can’t remember why it’s a random no😊), the pins are 16mm and I used 40mm x 10mm flat bar. Weren't you worried about weld contamination from the mill scale you didn't grind off prior to welding?
Hi Steve, no not at all on a job like this. If it was a critical critical piece of engineering I would fully prep it, this little project is pretty agricultural. 😊 Besides this flat bar hasn’t a lot of scale, it’s fairly clean.

I purchased mine from RS Components (managed to remember 😊). They are expensive but good quality, although the price was much cheaper a couple of years ago.

Nice job. Top tip, you don't need primer on inside stuff like this, waste of time and money for no benefit.
Hi, thanks for your comment and I do understand your view. It does, on the face of it seem like a waste of time, but I have to disagree. Firstly your the paint will never cover or adhere properly without using a primer. It will always a better, longer lasting more durable finish with a base and top coat. Hi Christian, I don’t know a lot about although I think I have used a Hobart in the past. Looked them up though and they have good reviews, and that price seems reasonable if it is a new one or nearly new. They are retailing around $600. Hope this helps.

@@EverydayWorkshop The video was perfect. I needed to bend 10 identical straps of steel in a U shape for a project and I didn't have a lot of time to spare. Not having to design a bender myself, thanks to your video saved me a lot of head scratching and wasted material on prototypes. As luck would have it, I had all the steel for the bender and I was bending steel within a few hours.

😄 yeah you are correct, on the face of it you need a pedestal drill, band saw, welder etc. But you could probably make one with simple tools, ie a hack saw to cut the flat and round bar, and a hand electric drill for the holes in the flat bar. Make the round an interference fit into the flat bar, so you would probably have to buy the correct size drill bit. Then use a vice to press them together. Done correctly it would probably be a better result. Hope you like the video though. 🙂👍
Why don’t you use cold roll instead of the hot roll shit.
Hi William, well cold rolled is obviously preferred, but hot rolled is cheaper and more often available. I had this already and it’s fine for a job like this. Thanks for watching.

Simple! As long as you have a drill, grinder, vice, welder, etc. I am sure there are simple ways to make a wire bender, but this is not one of them.
Hi, thanks for your comment and I agree if you have got to have this basic equipment. It is more aimed at people who have this basic equipment in their garage, which many people do. If not, hopefully they enjoy watching and it may give them some ideas.
You could of course make a simpler version if you have a drill and a hack saw, to cut and drill some flat bar and then use bolts as the pins. Wouldn’t look as pretty but it would do the job fine. Hope you enjoyed watching. 🙂👍
