Great job on this, Mike! I worked for Marriott (MHRS) for 20 years starting in 1985 and retiring in 2005. I started as a graveyard engineer and in six years worked my way up to Director of Engineering. It was a good organization to work for and it offered many and various opportunities for career growth. I knew, of course, most of the story you told, but there were a few I wasn't aware of. Again, great work as usual.

In my experience, Marriot strikes the perfect balance between high-end luxury seen at something like a Four Season’s yet priced at a range more comparable to a Holiday Inn... It's the perfect balance between opposing customer segments

Also Willard Marriot was close friend with George Romney who was the CEO of American Motors, and according to legend is the one who convinced Marriot that roadside hotels was a good money maker, which in 1957 led to the first Marriot Motel, which spawned the hotel chain. Romney and Marriot were close friend for years and George named his son Willard Mitt Romney after Willard Marriot. The Romney connection to Marriot is it's one whole thing as well.

They owned restaurants including Roy Rogers and Big Boy as well!
On the other hand, please do this: "Barnes & Noble - Switching Industries". We know them today as a bookstore, but not when they began in 1873. They didn't get into the bookstore business until 1917.

You mentioned a couple of "Six Flags" parks... I'm guessing you're talking about the Great America parks? Originally opened by Marriott but sold off later, the one near Chicago to Six Flags and the one in the Bay Area to the city of Santa Clara (who later sold it to Kings Entertainment and now owned by Cedar Fair, though due to close at some point from 2028 to 2033).

I love Marriott Hotels. I did not realize they were in the food industry first. It is interesting that they bought Wags from Walgreens because they also were in the food industry when the CEO told the company they had 6 months to get out of the food industry completely and yet they created the malted milkshake. It looks like both companies were under great visionary leadership!

Personally I worked at Marriott for about 1 day. It was a horrible experience. I worked at a “restaurant” I was not allowed to take a break for my entire shift. Around half way through the shift they had me set up for a catering event by myself. The manager offered no help what so ever and it was a lot of work. The next day I brought the labor laws to the mangers attention and simply pointed out he owed all of his employees a break every shift. He said I would be allowed to take my break but my coworkers weren’t able to take theirs. When I told him this was illegal I was fired. Terrible company to work for.

I could find no reference to Marriott ever owning A&W: the brand, the drink or restaurant. The name came from Allen and Wright - the founders who ran it from the 20's til the 60's where it was sold to the J Hungerford Smith Company, and then to United Bands and then to Yum Foods and then to Cadbury. Where was Marriot in these?
