  • The historic first docking in space with the Agena is completed. Camaras record the harrowing experiences of the astronauts as Gemini VIII wildly gyrates through space following a malfunction. The spacecraft is separated from the Agena, brought under control and reentry is achieved.

Stereo wasn’t a common thing until the 1970s and most microphones record in mono

Throughout my childhood in Alexandria public schools every Gemini space flight was shown to the students. The wonder, the hopes, and the reality of what modern man was accomplishing held our undivided attention. Truly inspiring.

being an engineer, it's heart breaking when you're responsible for bugs on high pressure projects. However, I can't imagine the feeling of the person responsible for the short circuit at 23:18

NASA's John Hodge (1929 - 2021) British-born aerospace engineer and primary flight controller on the Gemini 8 mission. May he rest in peace.

He was the flight director on all odd number Apollo missions, in addition to the Gemini ones and it was on his shift that we landed on the moon. “And from now on, no person will leave or enter this room until we have either landed, we have crashed, or we have aborted. Those are the only three outcomes from this time on”.

I find it amazing how they were able to do all this stuff in space with the limited technology of their time.

      The technology was not "limited."

The Agena was a spent rocket stage which was docking-capable. They used them to practise docking in orbit, because nobody knew if it could be done at the time. The Agenas often failed, however, blowing up during launch or not having complete shroud seperation after launch. They're also called Agena Target Vehicle, if you want to read more.

    Me too :P
(With a sort of Atlas-Agena and Titan-Gemini replicas... just waiting an official way to "dock" in the game actively, and not only put ships nose to nose)

Litt known fact (especially to the inherently stupid) : HD did not exist in the 60s (or really even in the 70s outside of Japan).

    • @5Andysalive
      @5Andysalive 6 років тому +1

Also not existing were local recording of tv (taping). TV meant transmission to one of very few ground stations who could handle it.
Otherwise it was Film. Big heavy film, very limited in a capsule.
Expecting full visual coverage and looking for "continuity errors" in a little info film about a(ny) 60's space mission is just plain idiotic.
It's not like they had more difficult and important things to do than "vlogging".
Claiming special effects (which didn't exist) or cgi is plain braindeath.
Fun fact: Apollo 10 had 1 TV coverage transmitted to Madrid Ground station. It couldn't be transmitted to Houston so the flew it there. With a plane.
It was shown to the american public like 10 hours later.

Armstrong saved the day. The capsule was spinning so fast they were close to being unconscious. Neil was so cool under pressure. This had alot to do with him getting the moon shot.
