I have listened to this 1000 times over 20 years. It never loses its emotional intensity. The rythym section is different to a lot of his other music but his control and generosity of time to Higgins and Mitchell show his depth/ This is magical music. Lie down and let this roll over you. Heartfelt Alto does not get better.
Thanks for sharing. Today with several mass shootings in America , including Alexandria & ST, meanwhile ongoing civilian deaths in Raqqa & atrocities in Yemen & Somalia...this sinewy & burbbling piece was perfect. Thank you for posting for my marrow & thank you Art Pepper.
I recently read "straight life" art's life story 500 pages. When I finished the book I said what am I going to do now that it's over. Art touches my heart with his alto what can I say.Art's story is a tragedy. greg in the desert of south east arizona
His memoir is so wrenchingly sad and dark. It was hard to get through to the end. An amazing artist with a Sad Life and certainly not very "straight". He went straight for only like 3 years after turning 16 or so.
I read it several years ago also. When I finished it, I gave it to one Art's friends who was in Harbor hospital in LA. Art's friend who lost four limbs under the influence.
I agree with everyone here. And let’s not forget Tommy Flanagan’s elegant understated accompaniment, the way he listens to the other musicians as well as that perfectly shaped solo.
Blues is a light in my heart for ever and ever
I knew Red Mitchell here in italy: oustanding person and grea musician: I' sorry but I never heard anything about Carl Burnett but I think you are wright! Thank you very much!
I also have this record, it is a great name performance. Even though there is a tremendous talent, why are you drowning in drugs, is my favorite player.
It's a sad truth that many great artists have drowned in alcohol and drugs. And yes, one has to wonder why they throw away their lives. Edith Piaf, Chet Baker, Charlie Parker, Little Walter Jacobs, and so many more. And the world can only wonder where they would have gone artistically if they could have stayed clean. Myles Davis cleaned up his act and had a long and very productive career after drugs. It can be done!

Jazz is my Life. I like this version with saxophone 🎷. Thanks from Greece.
Art Pepper was a brilliant saxophonist and this incredible version of Nature Boy is just one example of how great he was.
There's always something so fresh and modern in his playing! - It will never get old.
Art Pepper.
I love him for all time, cannot get enough of Art Pepper
Same here, T
how expressive the red mitchell slides. and the perfect Flanagan solo hitting all the accents
This is one kind of expression of pure love
Magnificent rendition. Icy smooth. Red Mitchell is fantastic on bass.
completely share your admiration for Red Mitchell and also for George Cables. This group had a fantastic sound and interplay.
Precious melody...thaaank you!
This is the most seductive jazz song I have ever heard, man....
For whatever amount of recognition AP got it was not enough. There were times he was on the level of the sublime.
This music goes deep in my psyche, bringing back to life old wounds. Sweet pains. Melancholy invades me with its grey shadows.
Man, that was poetry
This is one of the most beautiful song ever! Belaboring the obvious, as my father used to say.
Love this tune...love Pepper's performance!
Thank You for posting been years, Art is a solid favorite .
Quelle merveilleuse interprétation de ce titre magique.
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 76yo Aussie fan.
Too deep I can't go there... R.I.P. Art Pepper
Love the piano and string acoustic bass too. I have listened 100s of times to it. Thanks for sharing.

The master of ballads.
Fantastic. Incredibly smooth. Bravo Art..
8:19…when Art switches from sax 🎷to trumpet 🎺, and goes right back to sax 🎷. Never done before 👏👏👏👏
No trumpet in this song.
😂 you missed the sarcasm…listen to his 8:19 phrase
one of the great jazz musicians.
Wonderful arrangement for one of my favorite songs. Really enjoyable to listen to this.

Haven't heard much of him, except that one w the rhythm section red paul philly. Can you hit reply and recommend any in particular?

I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this...how did he turn the pages?
In my opinion this is one of his finest expressions--truly art to behold. I see a bit of light at the very end.
I agree with everyone here.

Understated ? What do you mean by that ? Is it not perfectly played ?
I think the op meant that Flanagan is not overplaying, which can be an occupational hazard with some.
What an amazing foto show on top of such a wonderful rendition.....

He makes the Alto sound like a Tenor!
Nice grafics as well.

+Michael Bereckis did you try Stan Getz?

suono e fraseggio, unici nella storia
Harry Bosch Brought me here too
Harry Bosch and Art Pepper, both looking out at the canyon
But listen to Nat Cole, "Nature Boy."
«Harry Bosch sent me» sounds a little cooler :-)
Very nice indeed.

Alto saxophone № 1 in bop.
Love how he plays the low end, almost sounds tenorish.

@@howardherrnstadt7367 Ben Webster is one of my favourites and straddled sobriety and drink. He lived longer than many.

Pianist?
I believe you're mixing Art Pepper with Pepper Adams (who played baritone and had a quintet with Byrd)...
very 爽
Don't leave Bunky Green off your list of great alto players (for example, listen to the tune April Green)
Thanks Harry
thanx
X oh on.
Only Bird was better!
Art, in my opinion was as good as Parker.
Beau... Le son Pepper...
Sublime!
